Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 The Protector (Fragment 1)

The next morning, the Pei residence had returned to its usual order. Servants moved quietly through the huge hallways. Papers were arranged as neatly as possible, just like every other day. In the courtyard, the trees swayed gently in the morning wind.

It felt simple. Usual. Just like every other day.

No outsider could notice the difference at a glance.

But something had changed.

For the twins, it was noticeable.

Pei Ye sat quietly beside the tall window in their study room. Sunlight passed through the glass and stretched across the floor in long hazy lines. He watched it slowly, but his focus remained elsewhere.

And he couldn't explain why.

Across the room sat Pei Yan with a book open in front of him.

He had turned the same page several times.

Neither of them was focused.

The events of the previous day still hovered in their minds.

The legal meeting they had attended.

Their parents' calm demeanor.

Their own loss of control afterward.

And later — the kneeling for long hours on the cold floor.

With nothing but silence.

Pei Yan finally closed his book slowly without making a sound.

"They insulted us," he said.

Pei Ye looked at him.

"Yes, they did."

Pei Yan leaned back slightly.

"And Father still remained calm."

Pei Ye spoke quietly.

"He did react."

Pei Yan frowned.

"When?"

Pei Ye looked at the bookshelf and replied,

"When he won the case without even raising his voice."

Pei Yan remained silent for a moment.

Then he sighed.

"I know. He did."

Silence occupied the air in the room once again.

Outside in the courtyard, a bird flew in. A faint breeze moved the tree branches with the slightest sound.

Pei Yan spoke again.

"Has Father faced something like this before? Or even worse?"

Pei Ye thought about it.

Then he answered in a controlled, calm voice.

"Yes. Maybe he has."

Pei Yan tilted his head slightly.

"How do you know?"

Pei Ye looked at the wall that separated their study room from their parents' study.

"Because only someone who has experienced this before would live like this."

Pei Yan's gaze followed his.

Their parents seemed controlled.

Their world precise.

Nothing in this house happened without intention.

Everything was deliberate.

Even their punishments had meanings hidden within them.

Pei Yan murmured quietly,

"Then something must have happened."

Later that afternoon, a servant knocked on their door.

"You may come in," Pei Yan said.

The servant entered and bowed his head slightly.

"Young Masters Ye and Yan, Sir and Madam are asking for you."

The servant left, closing the door behind him.

The twins immediately stood up and walked toward the main study.

The corridor felt unusually silent.

When they entered the study, Pei Fang was already standing near the desk with his usual straight posture, his hands behind his back.

Both twins bowed.

"Father. Mother."

Pei Fang simply nodded.

Pei Jing was sitting nearby, reading through a set of documents.

Both of them looked calm.

But somehow the room felt strange.

"Sit," Pei Fang said.

Pei Ye and Pei Yan sat down obediently.

Pei Jing closed the document she was reading and placed it aside.

Then Pei Fang said,

"There is something that you should understand."

His voice was steady.

"Control is not just discipline. And it is certainly not motivation."

The twins listened carefully.

"It is survival. An instinct."

Pei Yan blinked.

Pei Ye remained still.

Pei Fang continued speaking, his voice becoming slightly deeper.

"When I was younger, there was a day when I almost lost control."

He paused briefly.

Not long enough to be dramatic.

But long enough for the atmosphere of the room to change.

"A gathering," he continued.

"A room filled with people."

His eyes seemed distant, as if reviewing the memory itself.

"Tea was served."

The twins remained quiet.

Pei Fang added calmly,

"And there was poison."

The room felt colder.

Pei Yan's eyes widened slightly.

Pei Ye's fingers tightened in his lap.

Pei Fang continued.

"I didn't know it at the time."

His voice remained calm.

"But someone else did."

For a brief moment, his gaze lowered.

"A man moved suddenly."

His words slowed.

"He pushed me aside."

Pei Yan asked quietly,

"What happened then, Father?"

Pei Fang lifted his gaze again.

"A glass fell."

He spoke as if describing something distant yet close enough to remember clearly.

"It shattered."

The only sound in the silent room seemed to be the imagined breaking of that glass.

"The drink spilled."

He paused again.

"And someone collapsed."

The twins exchanged quick glances.

But Pei Fang stopped speaking.

The memory ended there.

Abruptly.

Pei Ye hesitated before asking,

"So… he saved you?"

Pei Fang answered calmly.

"Yes."

Then Pei Yan asked,

"Who was he?"

Pei Fang shook his head slightly.

"That part does not matter."

Pei Ye frowned slightly.

"But it must matter."

Pei Fang looked at him.

"What matters is the lesson."

Silence followed.

Pei Fang continued.

"That day I learned something important."

His voice became firmer.

"Danger rarely arrives loudly."

"It appears quietly."

"And then it waits patiently for mistakes."

Pei Jing finally spoke.

Her voice was calm.

"This is why this house runs the way it does."

She looked at the twins.

"Discipline is not punishment."

"It is preparation."

Pei Ye remembered the kneeling punishment.

The long hours of silence.

The pain in their knees.

Pei Jing continued,

"If you lose control in front of an enemy…"

"You give them power."

Pei Yan slowly nodded.

Pei Fang spoke again.

"Yesterday was only words."

He looked at them carefully.

"But words are often the beginning of much larger things."

Pei Ye understood.

Pei Shuren had not cared about the twins.

He cared about power.

Control.

Influence.

Pei Fang added quietly,

"If your emotions can be controlled by someone else…"

"Then you are defeated before the real battle even begins."

The twins absorbed his words in silence.

The room slowly grew darker as evening approached.

Pei Jing stood and walked toward them.

She opened a small jar of ointment and began applying it to their knees.

The cooling sensation eased the lingering pain.

"The lesson must remain," she said softly.

"Even after the pain fades."

Pei Yan lowered his head slightly.

"Yesterday…"

Pei Fang interrupted calmly.

"Yesterday you learned."

Pei Yan nodded.

"Yes, Father."

Pei Fang then looked toward Pei Ye.

"And you?"

Pei Ye lifted his gaze.

"Yes, Father."

Pei Fang spoke evenly.

"You pride yourself on control."

Pei Ye nodded.

"Yes, I do."

Pei Fang continued.

"That is why your anger yesterday was more dangerous."

Pei Ye understood.

Pei Yan losing control was expected.

But Pei Ye losing control meant the foundation itself had shaken.

Pei Ye replied quietly,

"I understand."

Pei Fang studied him briefly.

Then he nodded.

"Good."

The conversation ended there.

But the lesson remained.

Night settled over the Pei residence once again.

The halls grew quiet as servants finished their work.

In their room, the twins lay on their beds.

The house was silent.

But their thoughts were not.

Pei Yan turned slightly.

"That story."

Pei Ye answered softly.

"Yes."

Pei Yan stared at the ceiling.

"He didn't tell us everything."

Pei Ye nodded.

"He never does."

Pei Yan thought for a moment.

"Do you think that man really died?"

Pei Ye remained quiet.

Then he answered,

"Maybe."

Pei Yan sighed.

"If he did… then that must be why Father is like this."

Pei Ye agreed.

"Yes."

Another pause followed.

Pei Yan whispered,

"But if someone tried to poison him once…"

Pei Ye finished the thought.

"They might try again."

The realization settled quietly between them.

Now their father's strict rules made more sense.

Control.

Discipline.

Awareness.

Not because he was cruel.

But because he had already seen how dangerous the world could be.

After some time, their door opened quietly.

Soft footsteps entered.

Pei Jing whispered,

"They are asleep."

Pei Fang replied softly,

"Yes."

They moved closer.

The twins kept their eyes closed.

Pei Jing applied the ointment once more.

Pei Fang spoke quietly.

"They are beginning to understand."

Pei Jing nodded.

"Yes."

Then she added softly,

"But they are still children."

Pei Fang looked at the twins for a moment.

"Yes, I know."

"But they will not remain children forever."

The lights dimmed slightly as they left the room.

The door closed quietly.

A minute passed.

Then Pei Yan slowly opened one eye.

Pei Ye did the same.

Pei Yan whispered,

"They knew."

Pei Ye nodded.

"Yes. They always do."

Silence returned to the room.

But the twins understood something important now.

Their parents were strict.

Their punishments were harsh.

Their expectations were unforgiving.

But everything they did had one purpose.

Preparation.

Because somewhere in the past, danger had already reached their family once.

And one day,

it might return.
