Chapter 6 - The Lion Does Not Flinch

The second wave of gunfire didn't last long.

Because Vittorio Moretti did not panic.

He commanded.

"Lock the perimeter," he ordered calmly.

Within seconds, hidden steel shutters slid down over the shattered windows. Guards moved with frightening precision. The chaos outside didn't feel chaotic anymore.

It felt controlled.

Vitale's men had expected fear.

They got structure.

Luca Vitale stood in the center of the ruined entrance hall, calculating. His men shifted behind him, uncertain for the first time since arriving.

"You walked into my house," Vittorio said quietly, adjusting his cufflinks. "You damaged my gates. You fired at my guards."

His voice never rose.

"And you believed I would bargain."

Vitale's jaw tightened slightly.

"I offered a simple exchange."

"You offered weakness," Vittorio corrected.

Another explosion sounded outside, but this time it wasn't Vitale's.

It was the outer road.

Matteo stepped closer to one of the security monitors.

"They're boxed in," he said calmly.

Vitale's head snapped toward him.

Vittorio smiled for the first time.

"You thought you were the hunter," Vittorio continued. "But you drove straight into my trap."

Sirens began wailing in the distance.

Not police.

Private security convoys.

The Moretti crest flashed on armored vehicles pulling into the street beyond the gates.

Bianca exhaled shakily. "Papa…"

Elena stared at the screens.

Vitale's men were surrounded.

Completely.

Vittorio took one step closer to Luca.

"I allowed you to breach the outer gate," he said softly. "I wanted to see which of my enemies would stand beside you."

Vitale's confidence cracked.

"Careful," he warned.

Vittorio leaned in slightly.

"You came for a girl," he said. "And now you leave with nothing."

Caterina shifted where she stood.

Isabella noticed immediately.

And smiled faintly.

"Caterina," Isabella said smoothly, "you look tense."

"I am not," Caterina replied.

Vitale glanced toward her.

That glance was everything.

Vittorio saw it.

Matteo saw it.

Enzo saw it.

The silence thickened.

Then Vittorio spoke.

"Disarm them."

Within seconds, Moretti guards stormed forward. Vitale's men hesitated, but their formation was broken. Outnumbered. Surrounded.

Vitale raised his hands slowly.

"This is not over," he said.

Vittorio's smile disappeared.

"It is for tonight."

As Vitale was restrained, he looked at Elena.

"You are in deeper than you know," he told her quietly.

Matteo stepped in front of her.

"She's exactly where she needs to be."

Vitale laughed softly as they dragged him back toward the gates.

"You think your house is solid," he called out. "Check your foundation."

Then he was gone.

The gates slammed shut.

Silence fell.

Heavy. Charged.

Vittorio turned slowly.

His gaze settled on Caterina.

"Everyone out," he said calmly.

No one argued.

Guards cleared the room. Bianca hesitated before leaving. Enzo lingered. Matteo stayed.

Isabella remained seated, elegant as ever.

Only family.

Only blood.

Only betrayal.

Vittorio walked toward Caterina.

"You were engaged to him."

It wasn't a question.

Caterina lifted her chin. "Years ago."

"You did not tell me."

"It was irrelevant."

Enzo's voice shook. "Irrelevant?"

Caterina's composure slipped slightly. "It ended before I married you."

"Did it," Isabella asked softly, "or did it evolve?"

Caterina's eyes flashed.

"You think I invited him here?"

Matteo answered before anyone else could.

"Yes."

The word landed like a gunshot.

Caterina laughed, but it sounded thinner now. "You're all paranoid."

Vittorio stepped closer.

"I built this empire before you learned how to lie," he said quietly. "Do not insult me."

Elena stood frozen near the staircase.

She realized something terrifying.

This wasn't about her anymore.

This was about pride.

Control.

Power.

Enzo looked between his father and his wife.

"Tell them," he demanded. "Tell them you didn't."

Caterina turned to him.

For the first time, Elena saw something honest in her expression.

Resentment.

"You humiliated me," Caterina said coldly. "You brought a stranger into our world."

"You ordered a shooting," Enzo shot back.

"You made me look weak," she snapped.

Vittorio's voice cut through them both.

"You brought my enemy to my door."

Caterina's silence was answer enough.

Isabella rose slowly.

"You confused jealousy with strategy," she said calmly. "That is a dangerous mistake."

Caterina's composure cracked fully then.

"I protected this family."

"You endangered it," Matteo replied.

Enzo stepped back as if struck.

Elena felt the air shift again.

Vittorio turned to one of the guards standing near the door.

"Take her to the east wing."

Enzo's head snapped up. "What?"

"Until I decide what to do," Vittorio finished.

Two guards approached Caterina.

She did not fight.

She only looked at Elena.

"You think this makes you safe," she said softly. "It makes you the center."

Elena didn't answer.

Because she knew it was true.

Caterina was escorted away.

The doors shut behind her.

Silence lingered.

Then Vittorio turned to Elena.

"You," he said calmly, "will remain here."

It wasn't a threat.

It was a decree.

Matteo stepped slightly closer to her anyway.

Vittorio noticed.

"Matteo," he said quietly, "you will oversee security personally."

"Yes, Papa."

"Enzo," Vittorio continued, "you will fix the instability you caused."

Enzo swallowed. "Yes."

Isabella approached Elena slowly.

"You have survived two families tonight," she said softly. "Impressive."

"I didn't ask for this," Elena whispered.

Isabella's smile was gentle but empty. "No one powerful ever does."

Suddenly, a guard rushed back into the room.

"Sir."

Vittorio did not turn. "Speak."

"There's been a breach."

Matteo's head snapped up. "Impossible."

"Not here," the guard clarified. "At the hospital."

Elena's blood ran cold.

"What hospital," she breathed.

The guard hesitated.

"Where the man shot earlier is being treated."

Adrian.

The room went silent.

Vittorio's gaze sharpened.

"Vitale?" Enzo asked.

The guard shook his head.

"No, sir."

"Then who," Matteo demanded.

The guard swallowed.

"A woman."

Elena felt her knees weaken.

"Describe her."

"Dark hair. Elegant. Entered alone."

The room went still.

Isabella's eyes narrowed slowly.

"That's not Vitale," Matteo said.

"No," Vittorio agreed.

Elena's voice barely came out.

"It's Caterina."

Enzo's face drained of color.

"But she's locked in the east wing," Bianca said from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

The guard looked confused.

"She's not there."

Silence.

Cold.

Heavy.

Vittorio's expression didn't change.

But his voice did.

"Seal the estate."

Matteo grabbed his phone.

Enzo ran toward the east wing corridor.

Isabella stood very still.

Elena's heart pounded violently.

Caterina had escaped.

And she was at the hospital.

With Adrian.

Vittorio finally looked at Elena.

"This," he said quietly, "is what betrayal costs."

Far across the city, in a dim hospital corridor, Caterina Moretti stood outside Adrian's room.

And she was smiling.
