Chapter 27 - Moss Hollow Cave [2]

"Everyone, protect yourselves!" Darren's shout rang through the cave as he raised his shield above Lira and himself, releasing a powerful battle cry that echoed off the stone walls.

The Moss Creepers rained down like a twisted storm of vines and tendrils.

"Torin, burn them! Nina, wide sweep! Brother Soren, cover Nina's right!" Darren's commands came fast and clear, his voice cutting through the chaos.

Torin responded immediately, drawing three arrows at once and channeling his mana until the tips ignited with orange flames. The flaming arrows streaked upward to strike the falling Creepers mid-descent, causing the creatures to screech as fire consumed their vine-like bodies and sending several to the ground as charred husks before they could even land.

Nearby, Nina moved like a dancer through the chaos. Her dual swords blurred in wide arcs to slice through the Creepers that landed near her, each strike proving clean and efficient. Her footwork kept her moving flawlessly as she pivoted from one target to the next.

Watching the team respond with such practiced coordination, Soren felt his initial spike of panic quickly fade.

'There's no need to panic. They know what they're doing.'

He shifted his position to Nina's right flank, his spear thrusting forward to intercept a Creeper lunging toward her exposed side. The blade pierced through its central mass, and the creature collapsed in a twitching heap.

"Good!" Nina called out without looking back, already engaging the next target.

Darren held his position over Lira, his shield glowing faintly with a bronze light.

"Come to me, you bastards!"

His voice carried a booming resonance that rippled through the cavern, and the remaining Creepers shifted their attention toward him, compelled by the taunting technique.

The creatures surged toward the tank as one, but Darren planted his feet firmly and activated his defensive skill. His shield expanded with a translucent barrier of hardened mana, absorbing the impact as the Creepers' tendrils slammed uselessly against the surface.

"Now!" Darren barked.

Torin's arrows found their marks one after another, each shot proving precise and lethal. Closing the distance in a flash, Nina used her blades to cut through the clustered enemies with ruthless efficiency. Soren supported her from the side, using his spear to find gaps and finish off wounded Creepers before they could retaliate.

Within minutes, the cave floor was littered with the corpses of Moss Creepers and the remaining Stone Beetles that had been caught in the chaos.

Darren lowered his shield, breathing steadily. "Everyone alright?"

"I'm fine!" Lira chirped, peeking out from behind her brother.

"Good here," Nina said, flicking green residue off her blades.

"No issues," Torin added, already retrieving his arrows.

Soren nodded. "I'm fine too."

"Good work, everyone. That could've gone worse if we panicked." Darren's gaze swept over the group with approval. "Let's take a few minutes to catch our breath, then we'll keep moving."

The party settled briefly, taking a moment to check their gear and recover their stamina.

Soren wiped sweat from his brow, his heart rate gradually returning to normal. The coordination had been impressive. Each member knew their role and executed it without hesitation.

'So this is what a real party looks like...'

Once they finished their short rest, they pressed onward.

───────

An hour passed as they navigated deeper into the cave, clearing small groups of monsters along the way. The encounters quickly became routine, with Darren drawing the initial focus, Nina and Soren striking from the front, Torin covering them from a distance, and Lira staying protected in the rear.

Finally, the narrow passage opened into a massive chamber that marked the boss's lair.

At the center of the cavern sat a creature four times the size of the regular Stone Beetles. Its dark gray shell was covered in jagged ridges, its six legs were as thick as tree trunks, and two massive mandibles clicked menacingly as it turned toward the intruders.

The Greater Stone Beetle.

Darren raised his shield, keeping his eyes locked onto the massive creature. "Alright, everyone. This is it. Stay sharp and stick to the plan. First, check the surroundings. Look for ambush points."

The team spread out slightly, scanning the walls, ceiling, and corners of the chamber.

Torin squinted upward into the shadows. "Ceiling looks clear."

"Nothing on this side," Nina added, circling to the right as her gaze swept over the darkness.

Soren checked the left flank, tightening his grip on his spear. The space seemed empty aside from the massive beetle at the center, but something felt off. He kept silent, searching for whatever was bothering him.

"Looks clear," Lira said nervously from behind Darren.

Darren nodded slowly. "Alright. Stay alert anyway. Boss fights can get unpredictable."

He turned toward the Greater Stone Beetle and struck his sword against his shield.

The creature's head snapped toward them, its mandibles clicking loudly as its legs shifted on the stone. It let out a low, rumbling screech that echoed through the entire chamber.

"Here we go!" Darren shouted, charging forward with his shield raised.

The beetle lunged, its massive body moving surprisingly fast despite its size. Darren met it head-on, bracing his feet as his shield glowed with reinforced mana to absorb the impact. The ground beneath him cracked from the force, but he held firm.

"Nina, flank left! Torin, aim for the eyes! Brother Soren, right side with me!"

Nina darted to the left, her swords flashing as she struck at the joints of the beetle's legs, while Torin's arrows streaked through the cavern to embed themselves near the creature's eye, causing it to rear back in fury.

Soren moved to the right, thrusting his spear at the gaps between the armored plates. The strikes landed, but the shell proved thick enough to keep his damage minimal.

For the next few minutes, the team maintained their steady pressure, working to force the beetle into using its ultimate ability so they could seize the opening to finish it off. Right on cue, the beetle reared up suddenly, lifting its front legs high off the ground.

"Fall back!" Darren shouted.

The creature slammed down with devastating force, sending a violent shudder through the ground that spiderwebbed cracks across the stone floor. Everyone staggered as the shockwave threw them off balance, though Darren managed to plant his shield and hold his ground through sheer strength.

In that split second, Soren's instincts screamed at him.

A chill ran down his spine as a shadow shifted along the wall behind them, moving where nothing should be.

"Be careful!"

The words barely left his mouth before thick vines exploded from the darkness.

Rather than dropping from the ceiling, they burst directly from the wall itself. The patch of moss-covered stone Soren had noticed earlier suddenly unfurled, revealing a massive tangle of green tendrils that protected a pulsing core hidden in the center. An Elite Moss Creeper had been waiting there the entire time, camouflaged perfectly against the rock.

Its vines lashed out like whips.

Soren reacted on instinct, activating Quick Step to blur forward as he threw himself toward Nina, whose back was turned to the incoming attack. Grabbing her shoulder, he yanked her forcefully aside just as a vine as thick as his arm slammed into the ground where she had been standing, cracking the stone beneath.

He was not fast enough to dodge the follow-up entirely, however. Another tendril caught him square across the ribs, hitting with the force of a club, and pain exploded through his side as he stumbled backward, gasping for breath.

"Brother Soren!" Lira's voice rang out.

Darren spun immediately, raising his shield to intercept a vine aimed at Lira. The strike rang loud against the metal, but his barrier held.

Torin tried to retreat, loosing an arrow toward the Creeper, but a vine coiled around his ankle mid-step.

"Wha—"

He hit the ground hard, his bow clattering away. Another tendril wrapped around his torso before he could recover, constricting tightly. His face twisted in pain as the vines squeezed.

"Torin!" Nina's eyes went wide, her grip on her swords faltering. Her brother was being crushed right in front of her.

The Greater Stone Beetle, sensing the chaos, charged toward Darren and Lira with renewed aggression.

Nina froze, torn between her brother and the boss, panic flashing across her face.

"Nina!" Soren's shout cut through her paralysis. "Kill the Creeper! Now!"

His voice was sharp enough to break Nina out of her shock. Her head snapped toward him, her eyes meeting his for a split second before she threw herself back into motion.

Her legs glowed with red mana as she activated her movement technique, launching her body forward like a bolt. Flames ignited along her swords as she shot directly toward the Elite Moss Creeper's core.

Soren gritted his teeth against the pain in his ribs and forced himself upright, realizing the beetle was already charging and that Darren could not handle both threats alone. He channeled cold mana into his weapon, causing frost to condense along the blade until it gleamed with crystalline ice.

As the beetle reared back to prepare another slam, Soren sprinted forward while ignoring the burning pain in his side. He drove his spear toward the creature's exposed weak point beneath its shell, where the legs connected to the body, forcing the icy blade to pierce through after a brief struggle.

"Scree-!"

The beetle's body convulsed as frost spread rapidly from the wound. At the same moment, Nina's swords crossed in a blazing arc, cutting clean through the Creeper's pulsing core and causing the vines to go limp just as quickly.

Nearby, Torin collapsed to the ground, coughing and gasping to catch his breath.

The beetle, however, was not finished. It thrashed wildly, sweeping one massive leg toward Soren, who was standing too close and remained too off-balance to dodge. Left with no other choice, he raised his spear to parry, gritting his teeth as the strike connected.

"ARGH!"

The force sent shockwaves through his arms and drove him to one knee. Even with his Fortified Body Constitution and Pain Resistance dulling the worst of it, the impact felt as though his bones were cracking. His right shoulder screamed in protest, and his grip on the spear nearly slipped entirely.

Before the beast could capitalize, Darren lunged forward. His shield slammed into the beetle's mandibles just as they were about to reach the fallen Soren and the exhausted Nina.

The impact drove the tank back a full meter, his boots grinding loudly against the stone as he held the line.

"F-Finish it!"
