"Sigh." Dumbledore sighed as he looked out at the dark sky.
It was a tiring day for him.
Word of yesterday's events had already spread throughout the castle, it was only a matter of time before the outside knew about this. Then hundreds of letters would arrive from concerned parents, the questioning ministry, and even the daily prophet might want a scoop.
He had just sat down when a voice called out to him.
"Hello Headmaster."
Dumbledore turned around.
There standing next to Fawkes was Basil.
"Ah, Basil." Dumbledore said. "What brings you here?"
Basil smiled. "I have something to discuss with you."
"Please have a seat." Dumbledore gestured to the seat opposite of him. "I find that tea is helpful during serious discussions." He then waved his wand and a tea set flew over to the desk.
"Which do you prefer? Chamomile or Lavender?"
Basil waved his hands. "I'm not really into tea."
"What a pity." Dumbledore reluctantly put away the extra cup.
"So, what brings you here, Basil?"
Basil smiled mischievously. "What would you do if I knew what the creature in the Chamber of Secrets is?"
Dumbledore paused. "That is interesting, did you just find out?"
Basil narrowed his eyes. "How do you know that?"
"You look like a child wanting praise from an adult," Dumbledore chuckled. "That usually means you've solved something."
Basil raised his eyebrows. "Really? Then why aren't you praising me?"
Dumbledore chuckled. "I thank you for investigating the incident. Would you like some sweets?" He took out a jar of sweets, pushing it across the desk.
"Hehehe." Basil grinned happily, pocketing the jar.
He then took out a picture and showed it to Dumbledore.
It was a picture of a gigantic green serpent, with glowing yellow eyes.
"Is this... a Basilisk?"
Basil smiled. "Yes, the king of serpents."
Dumbledore closed his eyes, recalling everything he knew about the Basilisk.
"Hagrid's roosters were killed." He muttered.
"Roosters were killed?" Basil remembered that a rooster's cry was fatal to a Basilisk. "It seems it really is the Basilisk."
Dumbledore sighed and asked. "How did you come to this conclusion?"
"While Harry Potter was replying to Lockhart's fan mail, he heard a voice that Lockhart couldn't. And yesterday, only he heard the voice, neither of his friends heard it. So it is possible that he is a parselmouth that heard the Basilisk while it was hunting. The only question is, how does it travel through the castle unseen?"
"Indeed. The question remains." Dumbledore stroked his beard, deep in thought.
Basil took out a note and passed it over to Dumbledore. "Here are my theories. I wrote them on the way here."
Dumbledore took the note and read it.
Disillusionment Charm
Cloak of invisibility
Shrinking charm
...
There were a lot of weird, esoteric charms and potions. But most seemed unlikely as knowledgeable people could see through it and neither of them noticed anything off in the castle.
"Which do you think the snake chose?" asked Basil.
"I do not know." Dumbledore sighed. "We still don't know who opened the chamber."
"Do you know how the heir opened the chamber?"
Basil tapped his chin. "From what I know, it would be something related to him. Possibly parseltongue as there is a Basilisk in there."
"That is plausible."
Dumbledore took a sip. Sighing softly. He looked up towards the walls.
"What do the professors think?"
Basil followed his gaze towards the headmasters hanging on the wall.
"We don't know much. Although, during my time at Hogwarts, I heard a rumour about snakes slithering inside the walls." A headmaster replied.
"Secret passages?" Basil murmured.
Deciding that it was leading nowhere, Basil stood up. "See you, Headmaster. I'll keep my eyes peeled."
Turning around Basil waved his hand lazily.
"Wait. I have a question."
Dumbledore stopped him.
"There are rumors about Slytherin hating muggles. What are your thoughts?"
Basil stopped. "It is true. But he wouldn't attack a student of Hogwarts."
After saying that Basil opened the door and left.
"Sigh." Dumbledore sat there, watching him leave.
