In a fancy room, we could see a man reading a file. In front of him were three photos: a monster, a child, and a woman.
"What do we know about the monster's mutation…" he said, glancing at a computer screen where a scientist was reading from a clipboard.
"At most, sir, it seems he has natural spider abilities, but much stronger. What really catches our attention is a kind of precognition for attacks that his field of vision can't detect. Somehow, his body reacts at the last moment, dodging every blow."
The man was suddenly yanked in classic horror-movie style.
"…That's a bit extravagant for someone who was a beast just days ago," he said as a large figure appeared on the screen. He wore a familiar Spider-Man suit, but the colors were a grayer palette. The spider on his chest was more aggressive, bigger, more threatening.
"…I know what kind of man you are…" he said, and finally we saw it was Jin—but not with the same clownish energy from when he fought naked. This was a romantic partner, a father—everything bad, but good for Delia and ACE.
"Well, what kind of man am I… Spider?" he asked, waiting for the answer.
"The kind of man who thinks he's above normal, but still at human level. Who knows how to make a difference… but not in the good sense…" Jin said as he approached the camera, leaving only the huge white eyes of the mask visible. Even through the lenses, faint red points passed behind the white.
"But that's not what I'm here to talk about… D-3A-L1A… Ac-3… They're my family. I'm not afraid to admit it. I've dealt with worse things. Imagine… every single day… nine hours without a break. You're tired. You just want a pause. But your enemies don't give a damn. For a moment you think… what if I pass this job to someone else? But then… boom… a damn idiot over two meters tall runs you over like a bullet train. Then you remember… I can't fail. Not now. Not after. Not ever…"
Jin spoke while the man watched him calmly, showing no change in expression.
"And why can't you quit?"
"Responsibility…" Jin said as he backed away to leave the room without turning.
"And if you think about coming after me, my woman, my daughter…" He paused. "I won't be the friendly neighborhood guy anymore. Not anymore. I already fell into the darkness but couldn't do anything… But now… I can make a difference…"
Jin left the room, ripping the door off its hinges with one grip. The metal twisted as he walked out.
…
In a room in Arkham, a special area under Delia's control, she was working calmly with Jin. The zone was isolated by thick layers of Jin's webs, now carrying a faint metallic gray tone.
"So… what's the excuse for literally giving me one of the worst days of my life and then… boom… romantic happy-ending scene…" Jin said while crafting a bracelet from spare parts, still upside-down and masked.
"You know, Jin… I really need to tell you. Do you know the theory of time—"
"An ignition point, a moment in the timeline too precious to change. Once it's created and fundamental, moving even a single pen in that point distorts the whole timeline into something worse or better," Jin interrupted, dropping in front of her to look her in the face.
She just watched him, sighed, walked to a chair, sat down, hands clasped, staring at Jin.
"I don't know how either… But the moment I died… I felt something… something beyond normal. A figure, red and yellow… running like there was no tomorrow. While the explosion happened—the moment I threw you into the sea to get you out of the blast radius—I caught a ride on that being without meaning to. I survived… but I arrived in this world. I tried to start from zero… but then… the owner of all this found me…"
She closed her LED visor eye for a moment, sighed, removed her lab coat and tossed it aside.
"You just… moved on and kept going?" Jin accused, voice low. He was still processing that his love—the trauma on the same level as Gwen—was simply alive.
"Do you think I didn't try to go back? Darling, you're my most precious thing in this whole world and—"
"'Thing'? Am I… an object? Someone you just had to pay a debt to because I saved you from the Chitauri?" Jin said, removing his mask. His hair fell behind him as he looked at her.
"…I know I messed up, but I think it's hard to fix right now…" Delia said, standing up, then kneeling in front of Jin. She pulled out a burgundy-red box.
"You're not going to—"
"Jin Parker… would you like to rekindle our relationship? As girlfriend… as ex-girlfriend… would you make this cyborg mafia queen the happiest woman in all these hells once again?" she asked with a small smile.
Jin stood frozen. He wanted to deny it, reject it—she knew how badly her "death" had broken him.
"No…"
"He… really something—" But before she could finish, Jin took the box from her hands, slid the ring onto his own finger, then pulled Delia into the strongest hug he could without hurting her.
"I can't say no to the woman who, after so many bad loves, showed me what loving again really feels like… Yes… I accept you as my girlfriend, Delia…"
He lifted her veil and kissed her passionately, using his hair to block ACE's view. She just watched calmly.
"Adults and their romances," ACE said flatly while reading some random file.
"When you're older you'll find someone who gives you HIV, AIDS and T—" Jin started.
Delia quickly covered his mouth.
"Darling, she's still way too young for your Brazilian jokes," she said, smiling calmly as she went back to work on a special project she'd been preparing—to return to the Marvel universe.
"…When it's just you and me alone, you're gonna hear a lot of unfiltered humor stories from me…" Jin said, returning to work alongside her.
But what was the work? A damn super-collider. Delia had an idea of what she was doing, but she lacked knowledge on the subject. Unlike Kingpin's, this one was more like the one from Gravity Falls.
"You had the flour and the eggs, sweetheart, but for the love of God…" Jin said, grabbing a pencil to correct the data while adjusting panels, systematically moving every button, recalibrating every detail with precision.
"Sorry if I didn't see your basic crayon science drawings," Delia said without rudeness, stepping aside to give him space.
Jin checked the cameras—soldiers were cutting through the webs with whatever they had.
"Okay… acceptable frequency… resonance level with an explosion tube heading to Earth-1 or whatever variant comes…" Jin said in full nerd mode. He left the control room, climbed the wall, opened a hatch. A holographic keyboard appeared and he started working on something.
"Okay, this is bad. ACE! I'm gonna need you to push your powers to the absolute max! Try to connect to the machine and hitch a ride on an explosion tube! As close as possible to our universe!"
"That's not a bit dangerous for her?" Delia asked, holding ACE in her arms. The girl was calm but insecure.
"Delia, as a certain damn wizard would say, the odds are one in a million…"
Heavy blows echoed. Very… very heavy.
"Shit!" Jin shouted, firing as much webbing as he could, even throwing large furniture and covering it with webs to barricade.
"I'll try…" ACE said, beginning to concentrate on following Jin's instructions.
*BOOM!*
"Round three, kid…" Bane said, seeing Jin close his eyes slightly before his new stingers emerged from his wrists. He prepared for the fight.
Bane charged to strike, but Jin dodged and tried the same trick. Bane agilely evaded, hitting a pressure point on Jin—who didn't let it go for free. He kicked Bane's elbow, twisting the arm grotesquely.
"Hm… not bad…" Bane said, watching Jin's body grow a few centimeters, muscles swelling.
"Good formula, but after all… it's just rudimentary Venom," Bane said, injecting his own steroid. His body inflated like a meat balloon, growing over four meters tall.
"Welcome to your new home…" he said, punching Jin—who tried to block but was buried in the ground.
Just as Bane was about to strike again, a shot hit his eye, exploding the globe.
"Delia, what the hell are you doing!?" Bane roared, looking at his former colleague.
"Protecting my family…" she said calmly, loading a purple cartridge and firing. Bane blocked, receiving an electric current.
Jin struck with his functional arm, injecting Venom directly into the eye socket.
"Gains~" Jin said, jumping back as Bane's body fell with a huge dry thud.
"God… how long since I felt adrenaline…" Jin said calmly, looking at Delia.
But then his spider-sense went into extreme panic.
*BOOM!*
A colossal blow landed on Jin, like the God of War statue hitting Kratos.
"You think you won!? YOU'RE NOTHING!?" Bane screamed, now over ten meters tall, his eye regenerating as he tried to force it back into the socket.
"Ouch… that's why I needed a chiropractor…" Jin said, trying to stand but receiving another blow that shook the whole place.
"YOU THINK JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE VENOM RUNNING THROUGH YOUR BODY YOU'RE ON MY LEVEL?!" Bane yelled, punching violently where Jin was. The new suit tore from the blows.
"Jin!" Delia shouted, trying to advance.
Jin webbed her and ACE away, pinning them safely to the side.
"With great power… comes great reality… Live… live at least for what we can't have… a family…" Jin said, taking more and more violent hits from Bane.
POV: ACE.
Is that it? Is this how it ends?
I watched as Jin… my dad… used everything he had so Delia and I could escape to another universe far from this one…
Even without wanting to, I could feel the pain passing through his mind—every bone shattering with each blow from the giant…
They tried to use that steroid on me, but it always left my body…
But… is he going to die?
An intrusive… horrible thought.
"No…" I said, pointing my hand at the man—subtly at first, then violently. My telekinesis acted like a beast. He talks about Venom? The strongest super-steroid? Fine… let's give him more than he can handle…
POV: Normal.
As Bane punched Jin violently, he felt something… his body was producing Venom in massive quantities.
"What the hell?" Bane said, starting to convulse as his muscles swelled uncontrollably.
"JIN! FINISH HIM NOW!" Delia yelled, seeing ACE bleeding from her eyes and other facial orifices.
"OKAY!" Jin shouted at the top of his lungs, looking at Bane as his stinger appeared, dripping his unique red Venom.
"When you see Mephisto on the other side of the afterlife… tell him Jin says hello…"
Without waiting, he impaled Bane, injecting the maximum amount of Venom possible. Bane began leaking Venom from his face, starting to melt.
But then a boom tube appeared.
Jin saw it, saw ACE beginning to collapse unconscious. He ran and caught her just in time, pulled Delia close, and looked at the boom tube.
Without a word, he jumped in—taking whatever waited on the other side.
End of chapter.
