Chapter 6 - The Beginning That Wasn’t

The paper with the symbol sat between Sophie and Ryan on the wooden library table.

Neither of them touched it for a moment.

The library was unusually quiet that afternoon. The soft ticking of the wall clock sounded louder than usual, echoing faintly between the tall bookshelves.

Ryan leaned forward.

"Okay," he said. "Let's go over this again."

Sophie rested her chin on her hand. "We found mysterious letters."

Ryan nodded. "Each letter had a different message."

"And the same symbol," Sophie added.

Ryan tapped the paper in front of them.

"And now this appears on the notice board saying 'Find the beginning.'"

Sophie sighed softly.

"Which would be helpful… if we had any idea what the beginning means."

Ryan thought for a moment.

Then he snapped his fingers.

"What if it means the beginning of the school?"

Sophie looked up.

"You mean… Crestwood's history?"

Ryan shrugged. "Schools usually keep records. Old photos, documents, that kind of stuff."

Sophie's eyes drifted slowly across the library.

Old shelves. Dusty books. Forgotten corners.

The library suddenly felt less like a study room and more like a vault of secrets.

"You might be right," she said quietly.

Ryan stood up.

"Well then," he said, stretching his arms slightly. "Let's go treasure hunting."

They moved toward the far end of the library.

Most students never went there.

The newer shelves held modern textbooks and novels, but the back section… that was different.

The lights were dimmer there.

And the air smelled faintly like old paper and dust.

Ryan scanned the shelves.

"Local history… school records… archives…"

Sophie walked along another row of books, running her fingers along the spines.

Some of these books looked older than the building itself.

Finally, Ryan pulled out a thick book.

A cloud of dust floated into the air.

He coughed. "Definitely old."

Sophie walked over.

The cover read: "Crestwood Academy: A History."

Ryan placed it on the table.

They both leaned closer as he opened the book.

The pages were yellowed with age.

Old photographs filled the first few pages. Black-and-white pictures of students standing in front of the school building decades ago.

Sophie flipped through slowly.

"Look at this," she said.

Ryan leaned closer.

One of the photographs showed the original Crestwood building.

But something about it looked… different.

Ryan frowned.

"The tower," he said.

Sophie blinked. "What?"

Ryan pointed.

"The clock tower. In this photo it's bigger."

Sophie looked carefully.

He was right.

The current tower at Crestwood was small. Almost decorative.

But in the old photograph, it looked tall and imposing.

"Maybe they rebuilt it," Sophie suggested.

Ryan nodded slowly.

"Maybe."

She continued turning pages.

Then suddenly she stopped.

Ryan noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Sophie pointed at a page near the middle of the book.

It showed a drawing.

Not a photograph.

A symbol.

Ryan's eyes widened.

It was the same symbol.

The exact same one from their letters.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Ryan whispered, "No way."

Sophie read the small paragraph under the drawing.

Her voice was quiet but steady.

"The founding crest of Crestwood Academy. The symbol was used by the original founders during the school's construction in 1892."

Ryan leaned closer.

"Founding crest?"

Sophie continued reading.

"The crest symbolized unity between the founders and the belief that knowledge connects past and future generations."

Ryan slowly leaned back in his chair.

"So the symbol isn't random."

Sophie shook her head.

"No."

Ryan looked at the page again.

"Then whoever sent those letters… knows this school's history."

Sophie's mind started racing.

"But why send it to us?"

Ryan gave a small half-smile.

"Maybe we're special."

Sophie rolled her eyes.

"Or maybe we're just unlucky."

Ryan laughed quietly.

But then Sophie noticed something else on the page.

Her smile faded.

"Ryan."

"Yeah?"

"There's more."

Ryan leaned closer again.

Sophie pointed at a small note written at the bottom of the page.

The handwriting looked different from the printed text.

Almost like someone had added it later.

Ryan read it out loud slowly.

"The symbol was abandoned after the incident."

Both of them froze.

Sophie felt a small chill.

"Incident?"

Ryan flipped the page quickly.

But the next page talked about something completely different.

No explanation.

No details.

Nothing.

Sophie frowned.

"That's it?"

Ryan looked annoyed.

"You can't just write 'incident' and not explain it."

Sophie turned back to the page again.

The small handwritten note looked darker than the printed text.

Someone had written it long after the book was published.

Ryan suddenly looked around the library.

"Do you think someone else has been researching this?"

Sophie thought about the mysterious letters.

The symbol.

The note on the notice board.

The feeling of being watched.

"Maybe," she said quietly.

Ryan closed the book.

"So the beginning might be connected to that incident."

Sophie nodded slowly.

"And the tower."

Ryan looked confused.

"The tower?"

Sophie pointed back at the old photograph.

"The tower used to be bigger."

Ryan stared at it again.

Realization slowly spread across his face.

"You think something happened there?"

Sophie shrugged slightly.

"I don't know."

Ryan stood up.

"Well… there's only one way to find out."

Sophie already knew what he was about to suggest.

"You want to go to the tower."

Ryan grinned.

"Exactly."

Sophie stared at him.

"You realize that part of the school is closed, right?"

Ryan shrugged.

"Rules are more like suggestions."

Sophie sighed.

But a small spark of curiosity was already growing inside her.

Because deep down…

She wanted answers too.

Ryan grabbed the paper with the symbol and slipped it into his notebook.

"After school," he said.

Sophie hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"After school."

Neither of them noticed that someone standing behind the far bookshelf had been listening to their entire conversation.

The figure stayed completely still.

Hidden in the shadows between the shelves.

And when Sophie and Ryan finally left the library…

The figure stepped forward slowly.

A quiet whisper slipped into the empty room.

"Good," the voice murmured.

"They're following the trail."

The mysterious figure looked down at the open book on the table.

At the symbol.

At the note about the incident.

Then they quietly closed the book.

And disappeared into the silent corridors of Crestwood.
