The cathedral mission should have felt victorious.
Instead, it felt unfinished.
Three days later, Kael sat at one of Fairy Tail's long wooden tables, quietly observing the chaos around him. Laughter. Arguments. Someone had already broken a chair.
Across from him, Natsu Dragneel slammed both hands onto the table.
"You've been quiet since the mission."
Kael blinked. "I talk."
"Not like that," Natsu said. "You think too much."
From the side, Gray Fullbuster took a drink and muttered, "That's because he actually has a brain."
Natsu's eye twitched. "You wanna say that again, ice cube?"
Gray stood immediately. "Gladly."
Chairs scraped back.
Several guild members leaned away.
Kael sighed.
"Do you two always—"
Too late.
Natsu launched first.
"Fire Dragon's Iron Fist!"
His flaming punch roared forward.
Gray countered instantly.
"Ice-Make: Shield!"
A curved wall of ice formed, absorbing the blow with a burst of steam.
The guild hall filled with cheering.
Kael stood slowly.
"You're going to destroy the building."
Natsu grinned. "Relax! We do this all the time!"
Gray slid across the floor, ice trailing beneath his feet.
"Ice-Make: Floor!"
The ground beneath Natsu froze slick.
Natsu slipped—
But caught himself mid-fall.
"Nice try!"
He leapt upward.
"Fire Dragon's Wing Attack!"
Flames spiraled as he spun downward.
Gray jumped back, forming a blade in one hand.
"Ice-Make: Sword!"
The fire and ice collided midair, sending a shockwave through the hall.
Kael moved without thinking.
His shadow rose around his arm.
"Shadow Devil's Bind."
Dark tendrils shot outward, wrapping around both Natsu and Gray's arms mid-swing.
They froze.
"What the—?!" Natsu barked.
Gray tried to pull free.
The tendrils tightened, but didn't crush.
"Enough," Kael said calmly.
The guild had gone quiet.
Natsu stared at the shadow binding him.
"…That's kinda cool."
Gray tested the resistance, then smirked. "It's precise."
Kael released them.
"I don't fight teammates."
Natsu stretched his shoulders. "Then fight us for real."
Kael tilted his head. "You were fighting for real."
Natsu grinned wider. "No. That was warming up."
Gray folded his arms. "He's not wrong."
There was no hostility in their eyes.
Only challenge.
Kael felt it—the difference between mountain survival and guild rivalry.
This wasn't about dominance.
It was about trust.
He stepped back into open space.
"Fine."
Natsu's flames ignited instantly.
Gray's frost spread across the floor.
Kael exhaled.
His shadow pooled beneath him.
They moved at once.
Natsu charged from the front.
Gray flanked from the right.
Kael's shadow expanded outward like ink in water.
Natsu struck first.
"Fire Dragon's Roar!"
A torrent of flame blasted forward.
Kael planted his feet.
"Shadow Devil's Curtain."
Darkness rose like a wall, absorbing the fire. The flames didn't vanish — they folded inward, swallowed.
Gray appeared behind him.
"Ice-Make: Lance!"
Spears shot toward Kael's blind spot.
Without turning—
"Shadow Devil's Rift Step."
Kael's body blurred into his own shadow and reappeared several feet away.
The lances struck only fading darkness.
Natsu laughed. "That's cheating!"
Kael's eyes sharpened.
"It's survival."
He countered.
"Shadow Devil's Crescent."
A sweeping arc of condensed shadow cut through the air.
Gray blocked with another shield, sliding backward.
Natsu burst through the smoke.
"Fire Dragon's Iron Fist!"
This time, Kael didn't block.
He caught it.
Shadow armored his forearm.
Flames roared around them, but did not overpower the darkness.
For a split second—
They locked eyes.
Natsu wasn't angry.
He was thrilled.
Gray moved in again.
But instead of attacking—
He stopped.
Lowered his hand.
"That's enough," Gray said.
Natsu paused.
Kael released his arm.
The guild hall was silent.
Then—
Cheers erupted.
Mugs slammed.
Someone shouted for drinks.
Natsu threw an arm around Kael's shoulder.
"You're strong!" he declared proudly.
Gray nodded once. "And controlled. That's rare."
Kael felt something unfamiliar.
Not victory.
Not validation.
Belonging.
"You two fight like rivals," Kael said.
"We are rivals," Gray and Natsu answered at the same time.
Then they glared at each other again.
Kael almost smiled.
Almost.
Later that night, the guild quieted.
Kael stood outside beneath the stars.
Footsteps approached.
Gray.
"You handled that cathedral well," Gray said casually.
"It feels connected towards my magic," Kael replied.
Gray was silent for a moment.
"You think someone's testing you?"
"Yes."
Gray exhaled lightly, mist forming in the cool air.
"Then don't handle it alone."
Kael looked at him.
Gray's gaze was steady.
"You joined Fairy Tail," Gray said. "That means we are family and your enemies become ours."
Before Kael could respond—
A fiery voice cut through the night.
"Oi! Ice freak! Stop having serious conversations without me!"
Natsu jogged over.
He looked between them.
"If someone's targeting you," Natsu said, cracking his knuckles, "I'll just punch them."
Gray rolled his eyes. "That's your solution to everything."
"It works."
Kael looked at both of them.
Fire.
Ice.
Opposites.
But steady.
His shadow stretched behind him.
For once—
It felt lighter.
"Then next time," Kael said quietly, "we fight together."
Natsu grinned.
Gray smirked.
And somewhere far beyond Magnolia—
A fractured sigil reassembled in darkness.
Three presences observed.
One spoke softly.
"The Abyssal one has formed bonds."
Another answered.
"Then sever them."
The final voice whispered—
"Begin Phase Two."
