Chapter 13 - The moment that changed everything Between heartbeats and secrets

The city lights stretched endlessly beneath them, glowing softly under the night sky, but Viviana barely saw any of it anymore. Her entire focus had narrowed to one simple, overwhelming thing—Luka's hand still holding hers. Warm. Steady. Real. She hadn't let go. Neither had he. And the words she had said—I think I really like you—were still there, alive between them, impossible to take back, impossible to ignore. Her cheeks were still warm, her heart still racing, and for once… she didn't try to hide it.

Luka felt everything. Not just the words, but the weight behind them. The honesty. The vulnerability. It settled inside him in a way that felt unfamiliar, almost unsteady. He was used to silence. To control. But this wasn't quiet anymore. This was something else. Something louder than sound. You're thinking too much, he said softly in her mind, trying to ground her… but also himself.

Viviana let out a small breath. I always do. A pause. Fragile. Then, quieter—Did I mess it up?

The question hit him instantly. Harder than he expected. No, he answered immediately. You didn't.

She looked at him then. Really looked at him. And this time, she didn't look away quickly. There was no hesitation in his eyes. No confusion. Just certainty. Something steady. Something that made her chest tighten in a different way.

Ioana noticed. Of course she noticed. But for once, she didn't interrupt. She didn't joke. She didn't tease. She just stayed quiet, watching them with a softer expression, like she understood this moment wasn't hers to break.

Time slowed. The air felt lighter. Viviana shifted slightly, her shoulder brushing Luka's again. She didn't move away. Neither did he. What happens now? she asked quietly in his mind.

Luka exhaled slowly. We don't have to decide everything today.

That helped more than anything else. She nodded slightly.

Eventually, Ioana stood up, stretching lightly. "Okay," she said, breaking the silence, "if we stay here any longer, I'm going to start having emotional development and I refuse."

Viviana laughed softly. Luka almost smiled.

They walked back through quiet streets, the city slowly returning around them. This time, Viviana didn't hesitate. Her hand found Luka's again, faster, more natural. Like it already belonged there. Luka didn't react. He just held it. Like it made sense.

When they reached her building, Ioana stopped first. "I'm leaving you two here," she said, giving Viviana a look. "Text me."

Viviana nodded quickly.

"And stop overthinking everything," Ioana added.

Viviana's face turned red instantly. Ioana smiled and left.

Silence again. But closer now. Warmer. Luka glanced at her slightly. You really do that a lot.

Overthink?

Yes.

Viviana looked down. I'm trying not to.

He didn't answer with words. He just stayed there.

For a second longer than necessary.

Then she stepped closer, just slightly, like she wasn't fully sure—but still wanted to be. Her heart was beating too fast again. She didn't kiss him this time. But she didn't move away quickly either.

Good night, she thought softly.

Luka felt that. And something in his chest shifted again. Good night.

She turned and went inside.

He stayed there a few seconds after the door closed.

Not moving.

Like part of him didn't want the moment to end yet.

The next day felt different.

Not in a big, obvious way.

But enough.

The hospital was quiet in that heavy way again. White walls. Soft footsteps. Distant sounds that Luka couldn't hear—but could still feel in the way people moved, in the rhythm of everything around him.

Viviana sat beside him, her phone in her hands, but she wasn't typing. She didn't need to. I don't like this place, she admitted quietly in his mind.

I know, Luka answered. I'm here.

That was enough.

Across the hallway, Ethan sat alone.

This time, there was no notebook open. No writing. Just stillness. But it wasn't calm. It was controlled. Like everything inside him was being held in place on purpose.

When the nurse called his name, he stood immediately. No hesitation.

"Your brother is stable," she said carefully. "But there's no change."

Ethan didn't react much. Just a small tightening of his jaw. "Can I see him?"

She nodded.

The room was dim. Machines. Quiet breathing that wasn't really his.

The boy in the bed didn't move. Didn't react.

Ethan stepped closer, slower now. For a moment, the sharp, calculating version of him… disappeared.

"You always hated hospitals," he said quietly.

Nothing.

Of course nothing.

His hand rested briefly on the edge of the bed. Not touching. Just close. "You should've stayed home that day," he added, voice lower now. "I told you."

Silence again.

His eyes moved slightly. Not emotional. Not exactly. But something was there. Something buried.

He stepped back. Control returning.

When he walked out into the hallway again, his mind was already moving. Observing. Connecting. Searching.

That's when he saw them.

Viviana. Luka.

Sitting close again. Too close to be random.

Too… synchronized.

He didn't move toward them.

Not this time.

He stayed where he was. Watching.

Analyzing.

No sound. No gestures. No visible communication.

And yet—something was happening.

He could see it.

In the timing.

In the way Luka's expression changed before Viviana moved.

In the way she reacted before he even looked at her.

Not guessing.

Not coincidence.

Connection.

Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

He had seen something like this before.

Not clearly. Not proven.

But enough to remember.

His fingers tightened slightly at his side.

"If perception isn't limited to senses…" he murmured quietly to himself, barely moving his lips, "then communication doesn't need sound."

His gaze stayed on them.

Longer this time.

Not curious.

Focused.

Not because they were interesting.

But because they were… possible.

And if they were possible—

Then maybe something else was too.

Something doctors couldn't explain.

Something machines couldn't measure.

Something that might reach places… nothing else could.

His jaw tightened again.

Just slightly.

He didn't approach them.

Didn't speak.

Didn't interrupt.

Not yet.

Because Ethan Cole didn't act without understanding first.

And right now—

He was still learning.

But this time…

He wasn't going to look away.
