The Contradiction
Kael remembered the first time Dean had spoken to him — a brief exchange near the training yard, something offhand about the weight of a practice sword.
Then he realized, with a cold, creeping unease, that Dean had never said those words at all.
He turned toward him slowly. "Dean... when did we first meet?"
Dean's brow furrowed, confusion plain on his face. "At Thornrock. You know that."
But even as Dean said it, a second memory surfaced in Kael's mind, vivid and complete — a different place entirely, unfamiliar terrain, Dean's voice carrying words Kael had never once heard him speak in the world he actually remembered living.
Both memories felt equally real. Both refused to yield to the other.
What the System Could Not Resolve
Kael reached for the System, desperate for something solid to anchor himself against.
*[MEMORY VERIFICATION: FAILED]*
*[TWO HISTORICAL RECORDS DETECTED]*
*[BOTH RECORDS: AUTHENTIC]*
He stared at the notification, dread pooling cold in his chest. Not corruption. Not a simple error in the network's own careful accounting. Two separate, genuine histories, both marked true, both refusing to collapse into a single, coherent past.
The Keeper's Warning
"Do not ask which memory is real," the Keeper said immediately, its urgency cutting through Kael's own rising confusion.
"Why not?" Kael asked.
"Because that is exactly what it wants you to ask."
Kael absorbed the warning slowly, understanding beginning to surface through the fog of contradiction. Whatever this entity actually intended, it wasn't simple deception. It wanted him searching for a single, definitive truth — and searching, apparently, was itself the trap.
Three Versions
The visions arrived without further warning, each one complete, each one carrying Dean, Angelika, and Borr exactly as Kael knew them, woven into a past that contradicted the others entirely.
In the first, he was an outsider who had stumbled into Thornrock's siege and helped save it through nothing but stubborn courage and useful skill.
In the second, he had always belonged to this ancient network, born into it, raised toward this exact moment by a lineage that had never once let him leave its orbit.
In the third — and this one lingered longest, its detail sharper than the others — he was not Kael Draven arriving fresh into this story at all. He was a previous commander, his memory of that earlier failure carefully erased, given a new name and a new beginning so the network could try him again without the weight of his own past mistakes.
Each version felt, in the moment of experiencing it, like the only truth that had ever existed.
What Kael Refused
"You're asking me which memory defines me," Kael said finally, understanding settling into place through the chaos.
*Yes,* the presence answered — cold, ancient, and patient in a way that carried none of the Keeper's own weary familiarity.
"None of them," Kael said.
He held to the refusal even as the visions pressed harder, each one offering itself as more real, more foundational, more essential than his own stubborn resistance could withstand.
"I don't need to remember who I was," he said, "to decide who I am."
The Erasure
The entity answered his refusal by taking everything.
Dean's face. Angelika's careful, calculating expression. Borr's weathered certainty. Thornrock's rising walls. The moment he had first woken in a stranger's body, gasping in a silt pit that had swallowed his old life whole.
All of it vanished at once, leaving Kael suspended in a blankness more total than any darkness the Keeper's own vast chamber had ever offered him.
For several long, terrifying seconds, he had nothing. No name he could confirm as his own. No face he could summon to anchor himself against the void.
Then, slowly, one thing remained — not a memory, not a fact, but a feeling, simple and unshakable.
*I chose them.*
He did not need to remember their faces to know that truth held. The memories returned slowly after that, piece by piece, no longer contested, no longer trembling between competing versions.
What Passed
*[KEEPER TRIAL 5/7 — COMPLETE]*
*[IDENTITY STABILITY: 100%]*
*[MEMORY DEPENDENCY: REDUCED]*
*[TRUE COMMANDER RECOGNITION: 31% → 47%]*
The relief lasted only a moment before the next notification settled over it.
*[EXTERNAL ENTITY #2 COMPATIBILITY: INCREASED]*
"Why did that increase?" Kael demanded, exhaustion bleeding into every word.
"Because you survived its strongest weapon," the Keeper said.
"What was the weapon?"
"Not forgetting."
A pause, heavy and final.
"Making you believe you had remembered incorrectly."
What Chose Again
The entity's voice returned, addressing him directly for the first time since its attention had first found him across the network's vast reach.
*"You chose who you are,"* it said.
"Yes," Kael answered.
*"Then choose again."*
The System flared with fresh, unwelcome urgency.
*[TRIAL 6/7 DETECTED]*
*[TRIAL TYPE: LOYALTY]*
Kael turned toward Dean, Angelika, and Borr, and felt his stomach drop at what the network showed him.
*[LOYALTY: KAEL DRAVEN — 100%]*
That much held steady. But beside the second name, the record offered nothing at all.
*[LOYALTY: UNKNOWN]*
And beside the third, a line that turned Kael's blood to ice.
*[LOYALTY: EXTERNAL ENTITY #2]*
His expression hardened slowly, dread settling into something considerably colder than any previous trial had managed to instill.
For the first time since Thornrock had awakened, Kael didn't know which of his three closest allies he could trust.
