Chapter 10 - chapter 10 : Crimson Hanabi

The freezing winds of Osaka's New Year's Eve bit at the exposed skin, but the city was alive with a warmth that only a festival could bring. As the crowd surged toward the Dotonbori district, the neon lights of the Glico Man reflected in the dark waters of the canal. Among the thousands of faces, two figures stood out—one, a boy with a gaze as sharp as a blade, and the other, a girl who looked like she had stepped straight out of a spring dream.

Shin stood outside the apartment complex, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. The cold was numbing, but his mind was elsewhere. He looked at the digital clock on his phone—10:45 PM.

"Why do girls take an eternity to get ready?" he muttered to himself, the visible puff of his breath vanishing into the night air. "Another New Year will arrive by the time she's done." He reached out and pressed the doorbell with a hint of impatience. "Ai! Are you coming or should I go alone? Itsuki is already busy with Saki, and if we don't leave now, the trains will be a nightmare. I'm not spending the countdown stuck in a subway station!"

Suddenly, the heavy door creaked open. The frustration on Shin's face died instantly.

"I'm ready! Look... how do I look?"

Ai stepped out into the hallway light. She was wearing a beautiful pink Kimono (traditional Japanese dress), the fabric adorned with delicate cherry blossom petals that seemed to dance as she moved. Her hair was styled perfectly, and for a moment, the harsh winter air felt like the gentle breeze of April.

Shin froze. His heart, usually a fortress of cold indifference built to protect himself from the world, skipped a continuous beat. For a split second, the noise of the city, the cold, and even his own breath went silent. All he could see was the way her eyes sparkled with a mix of anxiety and excitement. She looked... ethereal.

Thwack!

A sharp, sudden punch landed squarely on his stomach, breaking the trance.

"Are you just going to stare like a statue, or are you going to say something?" Ai huffed, her cheeks flushing a deeper shade of pink than her dress. "I even complimented you first! Now it's your turn, you idiot!"

Shin doubled over, clutching his ribs and gasping for air. "Ow... damn it, Ai! Am I a punching bag to you? My stomach isn't made of steel!"

He looked up at her, seeing her pouting face. A small, involuntary smile tugged at his lips. "You look... beautiful. Truly. Happy now? Now let's just go before you decide to break my ribs for real."

Ai's pout shifted into a satisfied, triumphant grin. "What a half-hearted compliment. Honestly, Shin, you have the emotional range of a rock. I should probably give you another punch just to wake you up."

"Please don't," Shin sighed, straightening up with a groan. "You look like a delicate flower, but you hit like a professional MMA boxer. Let's go, Champ."

"Alright then, Zoro 2.0," Ai teased, skipping ahead toward the station.

"Don't call me that! I told you, I'm not that bad with directions!" Shin grumbled, though he found himself following her lead without a second thought.

The train to central Osaka was a suffocating sea of people. Every station added more passengers, pushing everyone closer together. A sudden lurch of the carriage as it rounded a sharp bend sent the crowd swaying. Before Shin could grab the overhead strap, Ai was thrown forward, her body pressing firmly against his chest.

The scent of her hair—something sweet and nostalgic, like vanilla and fresh rain—filled his senses. He could feel her heart racing, or was it his own?

"Are you okay?" Shin asked, his voice dropping to a low, protective murmur as he wrapped an arm around the railing behind her to create a small space of safety.

"Yeah," Ai whispered, her voice muffled against his coat. She looked up, her face inches from his. "Tonight is going to be perfect, Shin. I've decided. I'm going to eat so much cake—chocolate, strawberry, matcha... I want it all!"

Shin shook his head, a genuine laugh escaping his throat. This girl and her sugar obsession. How can someone so small have such a massive appetite? She's going to have a sugar crash before the fireworks even start.

"Just don't get a stomach ache," he teased. "I'm not carrying you home."

"Liar. You totally would," she countered with a wink.

They eventually reached the grand shrine for Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the year). The atmosphere was thick with the scent of burning incense and the rhythmic sound of clapping hands. Despite the massive crowd, there was a strange, sacred silence that hung over the prayer area.

As they stood before the offering box, the wind brushed past them, carrying the whispers of thousands of people's hopes and dreams. Shin closed his eyes, his mind drifting to the scars of his past—to the betrayals that had made him stay silent for so long.

Shin's Prayer: 'I'm tired of running, and I'm tired of being afraid. I want to leave the shadows of my past behind. I want to build a life where I don't have to hide. And... if it's not too much to ask... I want this girl to stay by my side. Don't let me push her away.'

Next to him, Ai was perfectly still, her hands joined in deep devotion.

Ai's Prayer: 'Everyone I ever cared for eventually left me. I grew up thinking that being alone was my destiny. But then I met him. In Shin, I don't just see a friend... I see the family I lost. Please, whatever happens this year, don't let me lose him. Don't let me be alone again.'

When they both opened their eyes, Shin noticed a glint of moisture in the corners of Ai's eyes. "Ai? What is it? Why are you crying?"

"Nothing..." she sniffed, wiping her eyes hurriedly with her sleeve. "I just... I missed my family for a second. Everything is so beautiful tonight, and they feel so far away."

Shin hesitated. His old self would have looked away, awkward and silent. But the new Shin, the one who had walked through the cold night to find his own strength, reached out. He placed a steady hand on her shoulder.

"Don't be sad, Ai. You're not alone. Saki is here, and even that idiot Itsuki is here... and most importantly, I'm here. We're your family now. We aren't going anywhere."

Ai looked at him, her eyes widening in surprise at his sudden warmth. Slowly, a blush spread across her face. "I guess you're right. But Shin... why is your face so red? Is it the 'family' talk, or are you actually blushing for once?"

"It's the cold! My blood is literally freezing!" Shin stammered, pulling his hand back and looking away toward the bright lights of the food stalls. "Let's go to the Yatai (food stalls) already. You've been talking about that cake for hours, and I'm starving."

Ai laughed, her sadness replaced by a genuine, bell-like giggle. "You're so funny. Sometimes you're like a block of ice, and other times you melt like soft-serve ice cream."

The Matsuri (festival) was a riot of colors, smells, and sounds. They moved through the stalls like a whirlwind. Ai dragged him by the hand through crowds of happy couples and tourists celebrating Shogatsu (Japanese New Year). They ate takoyaki, shared a giant cotton candy, and yes, Ai finally got her strawberry shortcake, devouring it with a look of pure bliss that made Shin realize he would probably do this every year just to see that expression.

As the clock ticked toward the final minute of the year, they found a quiet, secluded spot on a bridge overlooking the river, away from the main roar of the crowd.

"Shin, look! It's starting!"

The giant screen in the distance began the countdown.

10... 9... 8...

The entire city seemed to hold its breath.

3... 2... 1...

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

The sky erupted. Vivid streaks of crimson, gold, and sapphire Hanabi (fireworks) bloomed in the darkness, their thunderous booms echoing in Shin's chest. The reflections danced in the river, turning the world into a canvas of light.

They stood in silence, their hands still intertwined from the walk through the crowd. Neither of them moved to let go.

Ai didn't look at the sky anymore. She turned her head, looking at the profile of Shin's face as it was illuminated by the flickering lights. Her expression shifted from excitement to a heavy, nervous seriousness. She took his hand in both of hers, her grip tightening until her knuckles turned white.

"Shin... I need to tell you something. I need to say it before the year gets any older."

"What is it, Ai? You're acting strange."

"I've been watching you since the very first day you joined the school," she began, her voice trembling but determined. "You were so quiet, so isolated... like you were carrying the weight of the entire world on your shoulders. I was scared to talk to you at first. I thought you hated everyone. But I'm so glad I found the courage to break that silence. I know the world hasn't been kind to you, Shin. I know why you built those walls. But you let me in. You trusted me. You chose to be my friend when you didn't have to."

Shin felt a lump form in his throat. The noise of the fireworks faded into the background. "Ai... I... I do trust you. More than anyone."

"No, let me finish," she said, her eyes locking onto his, honest and unwavering. "I love the way you try to act tough even when you're worried. I love your hidden kindness. I love the way you look when you're thinking too hard. I love everything about you, Shin. I don't want to be just a 'friend' in your new start."

She took a deep breath, the cold air filling her lungs as she voiced the truth she had been hiding.

"I love you, Shin. More than anything in this world."

Shin stood frozen, the crimson light of the final firework reflecting in his wide, stunned eyes. The world had just changed forever.
