Chapter 63 - Chapter 63: The Charcoal Ledger

The scrap bin at the back of the foundry was a graveyard of broken dreams. It was piled high with cracked gears, sheared pistons, and pitted iron blanks that had been rejected by the high-pressure auto-forges of the Middle Tier. In the Spire of Liang, if an iron blank couldn't handle the aggressive, uneven surge of a commercial Diesel-Qi furnace, it was thrown into the sub-levels to rust.

Xiao Mei dragged a heavy, three-foot bar of unrefined iron across the iron grating. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps, her small hands trembling against the rust. "This is... this is low-grade bog iron, Third Young Master. It's too brittle. If you try to force high-pressure Qi into this without an automatic carbon filter, the metal will split like dry wood."

Lin Wei didn't look back at her. He stood before the main six-inch fuel line, his slate-iron right hand still clamped around the iron casing.

"The auto-forges use carbon to mask the flaws in their logic," Lin Wei said, his voice carrying the dry, hollow resonance of a coal cellar opening. "They want the metal soft so their machines can print the same blade ten thousand times. We aren't printing."

[Sovereign Engine: Compacting Local Material Matrix...]

[Target Object: Bog Iron Blank (Low Quality)] [Allocation: 4,000 Points.]

[System Modification: Overwriting 'Brittle' state with 'Warden's Grain'.]

Lin Wei reached out with his blistered, raw human left hand and grabbed the end of the iron bar.

The moment his fingers touched the metal, the Sovereign Engine inside his chest gave a terrifying, muted thud. The 4,000 points didn't manifest as glowing magic or digital screens; they manifested as Absolute Thermal Compression. The air around the iron bar instantly shimmered with a dry, violent heat that distorted the furnace's orange light.

Xiao Mei stumbled back, shielding her eyes as the rusted iron bar in Lin Wei's left hand began to glow. It didn't turn the bright, liquid red of a normal forge fire. It turned a deep, absolute charcoal violet—a color that seemed to drink the ambient light of the room.

Creak. Grind.

The internal structure of the bog iron was being forcibly reorganized at an atomic level. The impurities, the air pockets, the cheap sulfur pockets—they weren't filtered out; they were crushed out, squeezed to the surface by a manual pressure that exceeded twelve thousand kilopascals. A dark, oily slag dripped onto the floor grating, hissing as it fell into the sub-level drainage.

At the same time, the black, matte-black texture on Lin Wei's right side spread across his chest, the interlocking gear-train etched into his slate skin shifting by one-eighth of an inch with a heavy, mechanical clunk.

[Physical Integrity: 52%.]

[Warning: Local vessel density is approaching critical limits for Tier-4 flesh.]

"The lift is moving!" the fallen siphon-master croaked from the corner, his hand clutching his ruined brass leg as the heavy iron chains in the elevator shaft began to rattle against the walls. "The Black-Vane Enforcers... they're coming down! You're just a 1-Star discard with a broken valve, Lin Wei! You can't fight the Bureau's coal regulations!"

The lift doors at the far end of the sub-level didn't open; they were blown outward by a sharp, pneumatic charge.

Four Black-Vane Enforcers stepped through the dust. Unlike the corporate machines of his previous life, these men were cyborgs—their torsos encased in heavy, riveted boilers of black iron, their eyes replaced by brass-rimmed pressure gauges that leaked a thin trail of green steam. They carried Steam-Glaives, heavy polearms connected by high-pressure rubber hoses directly to the coal-packs mounted on their backs.

"Lin Wei," the lead Enforcer hissed, the gauge over his left eye pulsing a frantic, mechanical red. "You have intentionally caused an overpressure event in Sector 3's main boiler. By order of the Steam-Sovereign, your Dan-engine is to be extracted and your lineage deleted from the charcoal ledger."

Lin Wei lifted the iron bar from the table.

It was no longer a blank. It was a four-foot, single-edged blade with a matte, charcoal-violet finish that left no reflection. It had no crossguard, no elegant engravings, and no corporate serial numbers. It was heavy, flat, and hard—the literal definition of a boundary.

"My brother Hao always loved the ledger," Lin Wei said, his violet left eye locking onto the brass gauges of the Enforcers. He took a single step forward, his slate boots cracking the iron grating beneath him. "Let's see what he writes when the pen is made of iron."

[Sovereign Engine: Weapons Tier-1 Engaged.]

[Current Balance: 969,500.]

[Local Reality Stress: 24%. Room to strike.]

The lead Enforcer didn't answer. He twisted the pressure valve on his forearm, and his Steam-Glaive let out a high-pitched, deafening shriek as three thousand pounds of superheated diesel pressure surged into the blade. He lunged through the soot, the weapon cutting a white-hot line through the dark.

Lin Wei didn't use a stance from the clan manual. He simply lifted his charcoal-violet blade with a single hand, meeting the superheated strike head-on.
