These Missing Person Glasses looked like toy glasses. Their appearance could be compared to the red framed glasses seen in the manga "Shonen Kamen Rider". They were almost exactly the same.
If someone wore something like that outside, people would definitely assume they were a chuunibyou, someone suffering from delusions of grandeur, or an overly enthusiastic idealist. It would look similar to someone walking around while wearing a ridiculous scissor shaped hat.
Arata placed the glasses on the bridge of his nose. They were simple non prescription glasses. In his mind he pictured that girl with waist length silver hair, a white nun's habit embroidered with gold patterns along the edges, and a youthful angelic face.
Through the Missing Person Glasses, a red arrow appeared on the ground.
One year ago, Index had her memories erased and found herself in Japan. She mistakenly believed that Kanzaki Kaori and Stiyl Magnus were evil magicians who had kidnapped her and wanted to exploit the knowledge of the grimoires stored within her mind. Because of that misunderstanding, she began to flee from them.
Kanzaki and Stiyl believed that the pain Index experienced every time her memories were erased was already unbearable. Because Index feared facing the emptiness of forgotten memories, they chose not to reveal the truth to her. Instead, they reluctantly played the role of villains according to Index's own assumptions.
They felt that they had no way to save a girl like her. All they could do was bury their sorrow in their hearts and silently endure the pain.
"By now Index should already be close to Academy City. During this year of constant escape she probably had nowhere comfortable to rest. Did she sleep on park benches or inside train stations?" Arata could not help imagining a small girl curled up on a park bench.
Should I go take a look now?
"Yoshi." Arata immediately stood up with determination and spoke gently to the Misaka Sisters who were watching the Curious Magical Girl Channel.
"Remember to go to bed at ten o'clock, alright? I will be back soon."
The Misaka Sister looked at him with an expressionless face and replied, "According to Academy City's safety regulations, going outside at night is considered dangerous. Misaka kindly reminds you."
"Of course I know that. But with my abilities I can go anywhere I want," Arata said with a shrug.
Many areas of Academy City were closed during the night, but with his spatial ability and flight, moving around freely was very easy.
He opened the balcony door and used telekinesis to envelop his entire body, freeing himself from the pull of gravity as he flew upward into the night sky above Academy City. He then took out an iron sphere about the size of a ping pong ball, aimed it in the direction indicated by the Missing Person Glasses, and activated his telekinesis at full power.
The iron sphere shot forward faster than a sniper rifle bullet.
The iron sphere carried a spatial marker. Only recently had Arata realized that spatial markers could be used in this way. It was essentially the Teigu version of the Flying Thunder God Technique.
After sensing that the spatial marker had stopped moving, Arata instantly teleported to that location. He appeared in an area filled with old low rise buildings and worn streets. Compared with Academy City, this place looked like it had been frozen in time many years ago, shortly after the collapse of the bubble economy.
The streetlights were dim and flickering, giving the entire place an unsafe atmosphere.
"So this is the base area." Arata thought to himself. He had not expected to travel so far. The distance had to be at least more than ten kilometers.
Although he had not left Academy City for ten years, he still knew that this base area was considered one of the most chaotic and impoverished places in Tokyo.
Following the direction indicated by the Missing Person Glasses, he was almost at his destination when a flash of light appeared ahead. It was clearly not an ordinary fire.
"Waaaaah!"
A figure suddenly rushed out from the corner ahead while screaming as if escaping from disaster. When she noticed Arata standing there, she was unable to stop in time and shouted loudly.
"Move! Please move! Ah!"
Because her hurried steps accidentally stepped on the long hem of her clothing that nearly dragged across the ground, she cried out while falling forward. She instinctively covered her cute face with both hands.
However, she did not feel the impact of hitting the ground.
When she slowly opened her eyes, she realized she was floating slightly above the ground.
"A magician?" The girl blinked in surprise. Her innocent expression showed almost no fear. After that she cautiously looked at the boy who had suddenly appeared.
"Are you one of their companions?"
"A magician? Companion? Sorry, cute nun. I just saw the light from the fire and thought something had caught fire here, so I came to check it out. I am an esper from Academy City."
Arata smiled while looking at the girl who seemed a little slow to react despite clearly trying to escape.
So I finally found you. You really are unbelievably cute, even cuter than I remember. But right now Kanzaki Kaori and Stiyl Magnus must be playing their usual chase game with her.
"An esper from Academy City? Oh! Then that means we are almost there. I have heard about that place before. It is the headquarters of the scientific side." Index gently landed on the ground, blinking her innocent eyes. She lifted the long hem of her nun's habit and prepared to run past Arata.
"Thank you for helping me. Goodbye."
"Wait a moment." Arata quickly grabbed her arm and asked, "You look like you are in trouble. If you need help, I cannot just stand by and watch. Helping a cute girl would make me very happy."
How could I possibly let you run away just like that? I came out this late specifically to find you.
"I am sorry. You are a good person. As you can see I am a member of the Church. Evil magicians are chasing me, but God will protect His followers so I will be fine. If you stay with me you might get dragged into danger. Goodbye." Index spoke sincerely while clasping her hands together in front of her chest like a saint.
After saying that she tried to pull her arm free from Arata's grasp, but she could not escape. She tilted her head in confusion and looked at him curiously, like a kitten staring at its reflection for the first time.
"Hey hey, that really hurts my feelings. What magician or evil magician? I am an esper from Academy City, you know? An esper. Also as a girl, especially a cute girl like you, you should never tell a boy that he is a good person." Arata pursed his lips while looking extremely disappointed.
"Why? You look very sad," Index asked innocently while blinking her eyes.
"Because when a girl tells a boy that he is a good person, it usually means she is firmly rejecting him," Arata said seriously.
"Hmm. You really are a strange person." Index puffed out her cheeks slightly.
"So as a girl, you should not reject a boy who sincerely wants to help you. Otherwise that boy will feel very disappointed," Arata said confidently. This encounter was progressing quite well.
"Thank you for your kindness, but I still cannot accept it," Index replied stubbornly like a child.
"She is right, kid. She cannot accept your kindness. Otherwise we will have no choice but to kill you."
A voice that sounded as unpleasant as a rabid dog suddenly rang out nearby.
