Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Fire and Flesh

The cave did not sleep.

After the divine presence vanished, the air remained heavy, charged with something wild and ancient. The runes along the walls still glowed faintly, as if watching, as if waiting.

Nysera sat near the inner fire pit, though no flames burned there. The heat came from somewhere deeper, rising through the stone itself. She could feel it beneath her palms, beneath her skin, answering the strange pulse in her blood.

Dragon.

The word still echoed inside her mind.

She had not spoken since the divine retreated. Not because she did not have questions. Because she had too many.

Across the cave, the Beast King watched her.

He had been silent as well.

Asher lay between them, massive body stretched across the stone floor, golden eyes half-closed yet alert. The wolf never truly rested. Neither, she suspected, did his king.

Finally, Nysera broke the silence.

"You knew."

It was not a question.

The Beast King's gaze sharpened. "I suspected."

"You did not tell me."

"You were not ready."

"And now I am?"

"You have no choice."

The truth of that settled heavily.

Nysera stood, restless energy pushing her to move. The mark on her wrist pulsed again, heat spreading through her veins. It no longer frightened her. It awakened something deeper.

"What happens next?"

"You learn."

"How?"

The Beast King rose slowly. Even in stillness, he radiated power. Darkness moved with him, shaping itself around his form like a living cloak.

"Control."

Nysera frowned. "That word again."

"It is the difference between survival and destruction."

"And if I fail?"

His voice lowered.

"Then you burn everything you love."

The words struck harder than any threat.

"I do not love anything."

His eyes darkened.

"You will."

The certainty unsettled her.

He stepped closer.

"Power such as yours does not remain contained. It grows. It demands."

"And you will teach me to restrain it?"

"No."

Her breath caught.

"I will teach you to wield it."

The distinction sent a strange thrill through her.

"Show me."

The Beast King studied her for a long moment. Rain continued to strike the cave entrance, distant thunder echoing across the cliffs.

"Very well."

He extended his hand.

Nysera hesitated only briefly before placing hers in his.

The moment their skin touched, fire surged.

Not outside.

Inside.

It spread from the mark, racing up her arm, across her chest, through her spine. She gasped as heat coiled low in her body, sharp and overwhelming.

"Focus," he said.

"I am trying."

"No. You are reacting. Feel it. Do not fight."

Nysera closed her eyes.

The heat grew.

She imagined it as something alive. Something breathing.

At first, it resisted.

Then it answered.

A slow current moved through her veins, no longer chaotic. No longer burning.

Guided.

Her breathing steadied.

When she opened her eyes again, the Beast King stood very close.

Too close.

She could feel the warmth of his body, the strength in the hand that still held hers.

"Good," he murmured.

The low approval sent a shiver down her spine.

"Again."

He moved behind her.

Nysera stiffened as his presence surrounded her. His hand shifted, guiding her arm outward.

"Feel the ground," he said.

She did.

The cave responded instantly.

The runes brightened.

Energy rose through the stone and into her body.

But this time, it did not overwhelm.

It obeyed.

Her fingers trembled as dark fire flickered around her hand.

Not visible flame.

Something deeper.

Something ancient.

She turned slightly.

"You are using me as a weapon."

"Yes."

The honesty shocked her.

"And if I refuse?"

His breath brushed her ear.

"You will not."

"Why?"

"Because you want this."

The words struck true.

She did.

Power. Control. Freedom.

And something else.

Something tied to him.

Nysera stepped away.

"I do not belong to you."

The Beast King's gaze followed her.

"No."

The agreement surprised her.

"You belong to yourself."

Relief and confusion twisted together.

"But," he continued, "I will stand beside you."

She searched his face.

"Why?"

"Because I have waited centuries for someone who could."

The admission was quiet, almost raw.

Nysera's chest tightened.

Silence stretched between them.

Then Asher stood abruptly.

The wolf's ears lifted.

A low growl filled the cave.

"They are not alone," the Beast King said.

Nysera felt it too.

Not divine.

Something older.

Something hungry.

From deep within the cave, beyond the circle of bones, a sound echoed.

A slow scrape.

Stone against scale.

Nysera turned.

The darkness shifted.

Two enormous eyes opened.

They glowed like molten gold.

The dragon.

Her heart thundered.

It was larger than anything she had imagined. Its body lay coiled in shadow, wings folded like mountains, scales absorbing the faint light.

It watched her.

Not with hunger.

With recognition.

Nysera stepped forward before she could stop herself.

The Beast King did not interfere.

The dragon lowered its head slightly.

The air grew hot.

The mark on her wrist burned again.

"What does it want?" she whispered.

"You," the Beast King answered.

Nysera swallowed.

"I am not ready."

"You will never be."

The dragon exhaled.

Warm air washed over her, carrying the scent of fire and ancient earth.

Her fear faded.

In its place came something powerful.

Belonging.

She lifted her hand.

The dragon leaned closer.

When her palm touched its scale, fire erupted.

But it did not burn.

It filled her.

Strength.

Memory.

Legacy.

She saw wings tearing the sky.

Empires falling.

A queen standing in flame.

Nysera gasped.

The vision faded.

She turned to the Beast King.

"I saw… myself."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because that is your future."

Fear and excitement twisted inside her.

"And you?"

His gaze burned.

"I will stand beside you."

The promise was darker than any vow.

Thunder crashed again.

The storm had not passed.

It had only begun.

Nysera looked back at the dragon.

Then at the Beast King.

For the first time, she smiled fully.

"Then teach me everything."

His answering expression was both proud and dangerous.

"With pleasure."

The cave of bones became their sanctuary.

And far above, the gods prepared for war.
