Chapter 9 - The First Smile

The light inside the hut had dimmed; only a faint red glow emanated from the burning wood in the stove. LeeHan bowed his head, and after a long silence, he asked a question in a voice heavy with emotion. It wasn't suspicion in his tone, but a deep sense of helplessness.

"Why... why are you doing all this for me?" He paused, looking at Hao Chen and Hao Lin. "I don't even know you... and you don't know me. I'm not your relative, and I have nothing to do with you. Yet, you saved my life, brought me into your home, and now you've given me this incredibly precious pill! I have nothing to give you in return... so why do all this for me?"

Tears welled in his eyes. He felt as though he was unworthy of such kindness.

Hao Chen stood up, walked over to LeeHan, and placed a hand on his head. His touch was warm and comforting. He spoke with great affection:

"Son, sometimes in this world, things are not done for a reward. You are no stranger to us; you are a human being who needed help. And as for not knowing you... does the sun check to see whom it gives light to? Or does the river ask who is drinking from it to quench their thirst?"

Hao Lin stepped closer, smiling. "Oh, you think too much! Grandpa always says that if we can do good for someone, we should. And besides, I've gained a new friend, so all the hard work I put into that pill is already paid off, isn't it?"

LeeHan stared at their faces. For the first time, he realized that freedom wasn't just about stepping outside the walls of a Sect; freedom is the feeling of being treated like a 'human being' instead of a 'slave.'

He wiped his eyes and made a silent vow that no matter what happened, he would never break the trust of these people. He had found a reason to live—for them.

The light from the torch inside the hut had grown faint, but the events of that evening had completely transformed the energy of the room. Hearing the words of Hao Chen and Hao Lin, and feeling the warmth of the pill within him, the stone that had sat in LeeHan's chest for years finally began to melt.

He lifted his head. The look of a cornered animal was gone from his eyes. He looked at them, and his lips curved upward. This wasn't a forced grin or a reaction born of fear. It was the first 'real smile' of his life—a smile filled with peace.

"Thank you... thank you so much," LeeHan said in a soft but clear voice. "I never imagined anyone would do so much for someone like me. You haven't just given me my life; you've made me realize that I am a person, too."

Seeing his smile, Hao Lin's eyes sparkled. "Hey! You look much better when you smile. Before, you looked like someone had ripped your heart out. Now, enough with the 'thank you' business. You start working tomorrow morning. No one gets a free meal here!" she joked, lightening the atmosphere.

Hao Chen signaled LeeHan to rest with a gentle smile. That night, for the first time, LeeHan slept peacefully. There were no nightmares, no sound of the whip, and no voices to haunt him. Inside his body, the pill was doing its work, hiding him from the world like an anonymous shadow.

Meanwhile, the desolate ruins of the Blood-Refining Sect looked like a cursed wasteland. Black clouds loomed in the sky, and the scent of burnt bone still lingered in the air.

The Messenger stood there, fists clenched, staring at the spot where the soul-shaking power had emanated just moments before. The warriors and Elders beside him were still paralyzed with fear.

The Messenger picked up a handful of dust from the ground. It was already cold. He turned to the Elder and spoke in a grave tone, "This silence... this silence is even more terrifying than the explosion that just occurred. That pressure, that aura... it was exactly like that monster. If that power is spreading its wings in this world again, we are standing on the brink of a great catastrophe."

The Elder asked fearfully, "But Your Excellency, how did that pressure vanish? Did the power dissipate on its own?"

The Messenger narrowed his eyes, looking toward the heavens. "No, powers like that never truly vanish. They only change form. I suspect that what happened here was merely a sign. Who knows if that power has achieved 'Body Possession'? Who knows if it is hiding among us right now, wearing a human skin?"

He rested his hand on the hilt of his sword and stepped forward. "We must find it. If it is in a weak body, it will be easy to crush now. But if it strengthens its roots, no warrior of Heaven will be able to stop it. Search every village, every hut, and every cave. We need to find the 'shadow' that just vanished from our sight."

There was a strange sense of urgency in the Messenger's voice. He felt as though something monumental was slipping through his fingers. He had no inkling that the 'threat' he was planning to hunt across the empire was currently lying in the home of a simple farmer, eyes closed in peaceful sleep.

The order for the search was issued. Soldiers mounted their horses and fanned out in all directions. The time of peace was ending, and the distant thunder of a great storm could already be heard.
