Chapter 19 - Ch 19. A Race Against Time While Stuck In A Frying Pan

Floors 27 - 49: The Mighty Jungle

I pushed open the heavy wooden doors to Floor 27, and my lungs immediately seized up.

The crisp, clean air of the Safe Zone vanished, instantly replaced by a suffocating, hyper-humid heat. The catacombs were gone. I was standing in a massive, enclosed jungle where the canopy blocked out whatever light existed in this dimension. The air was thick with glowing, toxic spores that settled on my skin like ash.

[WARNING: Toxic Spores Detected. Constant HP Drain Applied.]

I immediately downed one of my Elixirs. The stinging in my lungs faded as the debuff icon disappeared from my vision.

The Verdant Overgrowth was a completely different kind of hell than the catacombs. The enemies didn't just march at me; they used guerrilla warfare.

Ambush Predators indistinguishable from the jungle foliage dropped from the ceiling. Leaf Spiders and Lash Vines constantly tried to drag my shadow infantry into the canopy, separating them from the pack. When we finally clustered together to defend against the vines, massive Acid-Spitting Beetles would bombard us from a distance, melting my soldiers into black smoke and heavily damaging my armor.

Even the environment itself fought back. Ancient stone Overgrown Golems acted as massive roadblocks, completely covered in magical, unbreakable vines.

"Burn it all!" I yelled, abandoning stealth entirely.

I combined my new Jutsu, using [Wind Style: Vacuum Wave] to sever the Lash Vines, followed instantly by [Fire Style: Dragon Flame Bombs] to turn the dense brush into an absolute inferno.

We cut and burned our way through twenty-three agonizing floors.

[FLOORS 27-49 CLEARED: 23 Floors x 5,000 Ryo = +115,000 Ryo]

[20,974,025 Ryo → 21,089,025 Ryo]

Floor 50: The Really Big One

I kicked open the doors to the halfway point. Floor 50 was a colossal, cavernous room completely blanketed in thick, sticky white webbing.

[FLOOR BOSS DETECTED: The Broodmother]

Hanging from the ceiling was a gigantic spider the size of a three-story building. Its abdomen throbbed with a sickly green light. It didn't leap down to fight me. Instead, it launched massive globs of sticky, sundew-like webbing that slammed into my shadow infantry, gluing them permanently to the stone floor.

Then, her abdomen pulsed, birthing hundreds of spiderlings the size of small cars that immediately swarmed down the cavern walls.

Ah, hell nah, I thought, slapping my hands together.

"Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

Fifty of my clones erupted into the cavern, completely filling the space alongside my un-webbed shadows.

"Defense line, now!" I barked.

Half of my clones slammed their hands into the ground. "Earth Style: Earth-Style Wall!"

A massive barricade of stone rose up, momentarily halting the tidal wave of giant spiderlings.

"Light 'em up!" I ordered the remaining clones.

It was an elemental masterpiece. A dozen clones unleashed [Wind Style: Great Breakthrough], sending a hurricane-force gale over the stone wall. The rest of the clones and I simultaneously fired [Fire Style: Great Fireball Jutsu] and [Dragon Flame Bombs] directly into the wind stream.

The wind expanded the flames, creating a massive, localized firestorm that completely incinerated the spiderlings and burned away the Broodmother's sticky webbing in a single, roaring blast.

With the ceiling webs burnt away, the Broodmother lost her footing and plummeted to the ground with an earth-shaking crash.

I didn't give her a second to recover. I activated [Sprint], blurring across the scorched earth. I ran straight up the massive spider's segmented leg, vaulted onto her back, and drove both of my daggers directly into her cluster of eyes.

I channeled my chakra into the blades. "Wind Style: Vacuum Wave!"

The point-blank vortex of compressed wind blades shredded her brain case from the inside out.

Floor 51: The Conundrum

I pushed through the doors into the Third Safe Zone, feeling like an absolute god. I had just crossed a major threshold, unlocked a broken title for my clones, and hit a massive payday.

The Safe Zone was identical to the last one, and as the warm healing light washed over me, I pulled up my menu to look through the items I should stock up on.

But before I could go any further, the entire System interface flashed red.

[NOTICE: TIME DILATION LIMIT APPROACHING]

Warning: The Player has spent 23 Hours inside the Tower.

Condition: You have exactly 1 Hour remaining to clear Floor 100.

Failure Penalty: If the Tower is not cleared within the time limit, the Player will be forcibly transported to the [PENALTY ZONE] for 4 Hours.

Huh?! For What?! I thought, staring in disbelief at the bright red countdown timer that had just materialized in the top corner of my vision.

[00:59:59]

There's absolutely no way, I thought, as pure panic bled into my thoughts. Clear 49 floors and two bosses in under an hour? That would be impossible, even with my upgrades. System, who the fuck do you think I am?! Superman?!

I ultimately came to the conclusion that I had to speedrun the levels in front of me as far as I physically could before getting dragged into whatever hell the System had prepared for me.

Can't beat the clock, but waiting and doing nothing isn't an ideal move either, I thought as I began stocking up on consumables and gear.

Floors 52 - 64: The Speedrun

I kicked open the doors to Floor 52 and was immediately blasted by a wall of unbearable, volcanic heat.

The biome had shifted into the Magma Foundry. Rivers of molten rock carved through blackened obsidian caverns. Just breathing the air scorched my throat.

I might die if I run through this, I realized.

I instantly opened up the System Shop and looked for what could aid me.

[Ice Release: Frost Carapace] (B-Rank): 100,000 Ryo

70 CP per activation. 20 CP per minute activated

[Ice Release: Glacial Wave] (B-Rank): 100,000 Ryo

An AoE blast of freezing air that can temporarily solidify magma or intense heat.

70 CP per activation.

[BUY BOTH NOW?]: Y/N

You know shit gotta be serious if I don't even care about the price, I mused. "Yes!"

[PURCHASE CONFIRMED: -200,000 Ryo]

[RYO BALANCE: 22,391,525 → 22,191,525 Ryo]

I instantly equipped the [Frost Carapace]. A thin layer of freezing vapor hugged my skin, completely neutralizing the oppressive heat of the cavern.

With [Sprint] active, I blurred through the caverns. Whenever a river of lava blocked my path, I slammed my hands down, unleashing [Glacial Wave] to flash-freeze a bridge across the molten rock. I briefly ignored the massive Obsidian Golems and Lava Slimes that tried to corral me to areas of intense heat, and slaughtered the annoying Flame Bats that tried to dive-bomb my head as I ran.

I was burning through chakra and stamina at a terrifying rate, chugging blue and red potions as I vaulted over magma geysers and shattered stone doors.

[FLOORS 52-64 CLEARED: 13 Floors x 5,000 Ryo = +65,000 Ryo]

[22,191,525 Ryo → 22,256,525 Ryo]

On Floor 65, mid-swing on an Obsidian Golem that had blocked the stairwell, the red timer in my peripheral vision hit zero.

[00:00:00]

The magma cavern instantly dissolved into digital static.

The Penalty Zone

I slammed hard onto solid, damp earth, rolling to my feet with my daggers instinctively drawn.

I was standing in a twisted, monochrome nightmare. The towering trees were massive and gnarled, the sky was a bruised, static gray, and the air felt impossibly heavy. It looked exactly like an inverted, corrupted version of The Forest of Death.

[PENALTY ZONE ACTIVATED: 4 HOURS REMAINING]

[WARNING!: Enemies in this zone yield no XP, no Loot, and cast no extractable Shadows. Survive.]

Welp that's not good, I chuckled nervously.

Almost immediately, a crushing, gravity-like pressure pushed down on my shoulders.

[WARNING: Malice Aura Detected. Continuous Stamina Drain Applied.]

It was a heavy, suffocating weight designed to completely sap the will to live. My stamina gauge began ticking down constantly. The only reason I wasn't driven to my knees instantly was the massive [CON] and [DEX] boosts I had gained from hitting Level 140.

Endless waves of monochrome, twisted beasts flooded out of the tree line.

"COME FORTH!" I roared.

My shadows erupted around me. I fought like a machine, carving through the corrupted wolves and deformed bears with [Vacuum Wave] and my daggers, matching my army's ferocity while watching the timer tick down with agonizing slowness.

The second hour hit just as I decapitated a gray-scaled serpent. A harsh red notification shattered my focus.

[WARNING: CHAKRA DAMPENING IN EFFECT. NINJUTSU SEALED.]

The [Frost Carapace] coating my skin instantly shattered into useless mist. The ambient chakra I constantly channeled into my blades vanished.

But it got worse.

[WARNING: SHADOW ARMY FORCIBLY RECALLED.]

Wait, what?!

I felt the connection to my soldiers forcefully snap as my entire army was violently ripped back into my shadow. I was completely alone. No elements. No army.

So it's just me against the literal spawns of hell, huh? I mused, gripping my daggers tighter as the beasts closed in.

My muscles screamed as I parried, dodged, and slashed. I was chugging my red and green potions on cooldown just to stay upright, but the fatigue was setting deep into my bones.

The timer hit [01:59:59]—the third hour, and the System decided I wasn't suffering enough.

[STATUS EFFECT APPLIED: Sluggish]

[STATUS EFFECT APPLIED: Knockback Vulnerability]

Aye yo! What's your problem?! I asked the System as my limbs suddenly felt like they were filled with wet cement.

Every single step took a monumental effort. A glancing blow from a charging corrupted boar—an attack I usually would have brushed off without flinching—sent me tumbling uncontrollably across the dirt.

I forced myself up, gasping for air, clutching my daggers with trembling hands. I was covered in my own blood and grime.

Then, the final nail in the coffin dropped.

[STATUS EFFECT APPLIED: Vertigo]

The monochrome forest violently spun sideways. Up became down. I staggered, my vision doubling as bile forcefully rose in my throat. I couldn't tell the sky apart from the dirt.

Suddenly, the ground beneath me erupted.

A colossal, pitch-black centipede with mandibles the size of greatswords lunged from the crater, its countless legs clicking rapidly as it dove straight for me.

Move! I screamed at my body.

I tried to activate [Sprint]. I tried to just step back. But the debuffs locked my legs in place, and completely destroyed my sense of balance.

My knees buckled, sending me crashing helplessly to the damp earth.

I could only watch as the massive, jagged jaws completely enveloped my vision, snapping shut and plunging everything into absolute darkness.

........

It was completely, suffocatingly pitch-black.

The air—if you could even call it that—was a thick, noxious miasma that burned my lungs with every frantic gasp. I was wedged tightly in a claustrophobic, fleshy tunnel, being crushed from all sides by contracting muscles.

[WARNING: Highly Corrosive Acid Detected. HP Rapidly Depleting.]

My skin was sizzling. The [Vertigo] kept my brain spinning in sickening loops, making it impossible to tell up from down, while the [Sluggish] debuff made my arms feel like they were bolted to the ground. I couldn't swing my daggers. I couldn't even brace myself against the crushing pressure.

I was being digested alive.

"Ahhhhhhh!" I screamed, my vision flashing red as my HP bar rapidly ticked downward.

My panicked mind frantically scrolled through my inventory.

The elixir! I remembered, desperately summoning the [Panacea of the Monarch].

The small, glowing glass vial materialized directly into my trembling hand. I forced my arm up against the crushing weight of the centipede's throat, jammed the vial into my mouth, and bit down hard on the cork.

I ripped the cork out and swallowed the glowing, golden liquid in one massive gulp.

[ULTIMATE ELIXIR CONSUMED.]

[ALL AFFLICTIONS CURED.]

['SUPER SOLDIER' STATUS GRANTED: HP Doubled. Infinite Stamina. Total Debuff Immunity.]

The effect was violently instantaneous. The world stopped spinning. The leaden weight vanished from my limbs. A terrifying, bottomless well of raw physical energy exploded from my core, completely overriding the burning of the stomach acid.

"My turn," I snarled in the darkness.

I gripped [Knight Killer] with both hands, jammed it deep into the fleshy wall of the beast's throat, and forcefully dragged it downward. The centipede let out a muffled, earth-shattering shriek. I ripped, tore, and carved my way through the dark like a human blender, completely ignoring the acid as my doubled HP regenerated through the damage.

Suddenly, the suffocating pressure gave way, and I burst out of the centipede's side, coated head to toe in foul, glowing discharge.

I landed heavily on the damp earth of the Penalty Zone. I wiped the grime from my eyes and looked at the endless wave of monochrome beasts charging at me, then up at the timer hovering in the sky.

[01:54:12]

With infinite stamina coursing through my veins and zero debuffs holding me back, a manic, feral grin spread across my face.

"I'm baaaaaack!"

[SKILL ACTIVATED: SPRINT]

I didn't stop moving for the next two hours. It was a relentless, monstrous rampage. I carved through corrupted bears, severed the heads of giant serpents, and completely painted the monochrome forest in black blood until the red timer finally hit zero.

[00:00:00]

[PENALTY ZONE SURVIVED.]

The twisted forest dissolved into digital static.

I landed boots-first on the hot obsidian stone of Floor 65, exactly where I had been standing when I was abducted.

A wave of relief washed over me. I wasn't just alive; thanks to the Panacea's lingering effects wearing off cleanly, I felt incredibly refreshed.

I'm never, ever doing a long raid again without figuring out a way to pause or manage the time dilation, I vowed, shuddering at the memory of the Malice Aura.

"COME FORTH!"

My shadow army erupted back into the physical world, their blue eyes glowing fiercely in the magma-lit cavern. I instantly channeled my chakra, enveloping myself in the [Frost Carapace] once more.

"Clear the room," I commanded.

We tore through the remaining Obsidian Golems with brutal efficiency.

[FLOORS 65-74 CLEARED: 10 Floors x 5,000 Ryo = +50,000 Ryo]

[NEW BALANCE: 22,306,525 Ryo]

Floor 75: El Toro

I kicked open the heavy iron doors to Floor 75.

The cavern was massive, bisected by a roaring river of lava. Standing in the center of a wide stone bridge was the final Mini-Boss of the Gauntlet.

[FLOOR BOSS DETECTED: The Obsidian Minotaur]

It was a towering, heavily armored beast made entirely of hardened black stone, laced with glowing, pulsing magma veins. It snorted a cloud of black ash and lowered its massive horns.

Big one, huh? Let's make this quick, I thought, activating [Sprint].

I blurred across the bridge, leaping into the air and driving my daggers toward the thick armor plating on its chest while simultaneously releasing a point-blank [Vacuum Wave].

CLANG.

My daggers sparked uselessly, barely scratching the obsidian hide. The compressed wind blades scattered against the stone like a gentle breeze.

Now that's one thick boi.

The Minotaur moved with terrifying speed for its size. Before I could even reposition, it twisted its massive torso and delivered a devastating, bone-rattling backhand directly to my ribs.

CRACK.

I was launched through the air like a ragdoll, skipping across the hard stone floor before slamming violently into the cavern wall.

[-35% HP]

I coughed out a breath, tasting iron as I forced myself to my feet. My [Frost Carapace] had shattered completely from the impact.

My vision narrowed as pure, unfiltered fury boiled up in my chest.

I instinctively flared my killing intent, unleashing the full, oppressive weight of my aura.

[SKILL EVOLUTION TRIGGERED!]

[BLOODLUST (LEVEL 1)] → [BLOODLUST (LEVEL 2)]

Effect: Project an intimidating aura to debuff enemy stats by 50%.

A shockwave of dense energy exploded from my body. The Minotaur physically staggered as the debuff hit it like a falling mountain. Its terrifying speed was completely stripped away, and the glow of its magma veins noticeably dimmed.

I didn't hesitate. I blurred forward, targeting the glowing, weakened magma joints behind its knees.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: CRITICAL STRIKE]

My blades flashed as the Minotaur's reinforced knee joints completely shattered under the amplified damage. The massive beast let out a rumbling groan as it collapsed to the stone floor. I leaped onto its broad back, drove the armor-piercing [Knight Killer] directly into the base of its thick skull, and triggered a second [Critical Strike].

The beast's red eyes flickered and died before its body crumbled into a pile of smoking, lifeless obsidian rocks.

[BOSS DEFEATED]

[XP GAINED]

[RYO EARNED: (65% HP x 50 Ryo) x 3.5 Rank Bonus = +11,375 Ryo]

[FLOOR 75 CLEAR BONUS: +5,000 Ryo]

[TOTAL RYO THIS FLOOR: 16,375 Ryo]

[RYO BALANCE: 22,306,525 Ryo → 22,322,900 Ryo]

Floor 76: The Final Safe Zone

I dragged myself through the doors of the final Safe Zone, collapsing heavily onto a bedroll as the warm, magical light washed over me.

My ribs violently popped back into place, and my HP and CP gauges rapidly filled to the brim. I took a long, deep breath, staring up at the ceiling.

I opened my inventory, organized my remaining potions, and checked my daggers.

Just twenty-four floors left, then I'm done.

I pushed myself off the floor, gripped my blades, and walked toward the final set of wooden doors.

Floors 77 - 99: The Frozen Abyss

The moment I pushed the door open, a heavy wind chill nearly knocked me flat on my back.

Woooooo! It's colder than a bitch in here!

The sweltering heat of the magma caverns was completely gone. I was standing in a massive, glacial wasteland. The stone walls were coated in thick layers of ancient blue ice, and a howling blizzard severely limited my visibility.

From an oven to a freezer, ain't this about a bitch? I shivered, my breath instantly pluming in the freezing air.

I had to constantly cycle mini [Fire Style: Great Fireball Jutsu] and [Dragon Flame Bombs] just to keep myself and my soldiers from freezing solid.

The enemies here were relentless and completely unbothered by the cold.

Hordes of Undead Frost Giants, heavily armored Ice Warriors, and savage Snow Trolls charged blindly through the blizzard, wielding weapons carved from massive icicles.

Every fight became a chaotic clash of ice and fire. I used my upgraded [Bloodlust] to cripple the massive Frost Giants, letting my Lizardman Commander, Giant Red Tiger, and the infantry tear them to pieces while I systematically hunted down the armored grunts.

The grind was absolutely brutal on my chakra reserves, forcing me to burn through my remaining blue potions just to keep the flames going. But the XP payout for the high-tier elemental monsters was staggering.

By the time I reached the massive, ornate ice doors of Floor 99, I had completely cleared the final stretch, leaving a trail of melted ice and shattered monsters in my wake.

[FLOORS 77-99 CLEARED: 23 Floors x 5,000 Ryo = +115,000 Ryo]

[RYO BALANCE: 22,322,900 Ryo → 22,437,900 Ryo]

[LEVEL UP!]

[LEVEL UP!]

[LEVEL UP!]

[NEW LEVEL: 150]

[FULL RECOVERY ACTIVATED]

Floor 100: The Summit

I stood before the towering, frost-covered doors of the final floor. Beyond these doors was the Tower Boss—the nightmare that ruled this entire 100-floor Gauntlet.

I reached out to push the heavy doors open, but the System abruptly chimed in, a massive, golden notification flooding my vision.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: QUOTA UPDATE]

Total Monsters Killed: 14,802 / 5,000 (Requirement Exceeded)

Total Boss Monsters Killed: 24 / 25

[NOTICE: The Player requires exactly 1 more Boss Monster kill to unlock the 'Veteran Hunter' Achievement.]

Upcoming Reward: [1x A-Rank Gate Key]

I paused, reading the golden text as a sharp, feral grin spread across my face.

"Ah yea, that's what I'm talking about."

The stakes just got infinitely higher. The key to even greater power—the literal next tiers of the System—was waiting on the other side of this single fight.

The mental fatigue of the last ninety-nine floors completely melted away under a fresh spike of pure adrenaline. I gripped my daggers tightly, braced my boots against the ice, and pushed the massive doors open.

"Let's see what you're made of."
