Coming out of the battle, Jake had lost count of how many times he'd said those words.
"I know Gold cards are strong, but they shouldn't be this strong. The three of us spent a combined 2,100 Psionic, and we couldn't beat your one 500-cost card?"
"Can't help it. Your boy's just built different."
Even Ethan himself hadn't expected Naruto to be this dominant.
Angemon clearly wasn't this broken — Ethan estimated that if he'd used Naruto against Ryan's two Purple cards, it still would've been an instant kill.
But Angemon's advantage was evolution potential. MagnaAngemon was already Legendary-tier in power, and there were stages beyond that.
Naruto's weakness was that his Sage Mode only lasted five minutes. After the timer ran out, his stats would drop by at least half — putting him roughly on par with a strong Purple card.
One was a potential-type Gold card. The other was a raw-power Gold card.
After the test, Ethan didn't have much else to do. They trained together for a while longer, then grabbed lunch as a group.
That afternoon, the finals of the Global Junior Card Master Tournament aired.
Both finalists had two Tier 3 Gold cards each, but the American contestant won in the end — his Shade Reaper card was simply a cut above his opponent's.
With that, the Junior Tournament wrapped up.
The Senior Card Master Tournament was a quadrennial event. The last one was two years ago; the next wouldn't happen until the second half of next year.
After two afternoon classes, the girls headed back to train, but Ethan declined to join. His deck still wasn't complete — better to spend the time making more cards. Besides, his current deck was so far ahead of theirs that training together mainly just put pressure on them.
The pressure on Jake was especially immense. He couldn't beat Lily, and he wouldn't compare himself to Sophie — she was support-focused, not built for 1v1s.
But the fact remained: he was the weakest link on Team 2D.
Back in his dorm, Ethan turned his thoughts to creating cards that could boost a character's combat power.
He could think of plenty of useful characters, but most were weaker than Naruto at the current tier.
So he tried something different: creating a pair of Sharingan to equip onto Naruto during matches.
Two failed attempts later, he shelved the idea. Better to complete the deck first.
By evening, he'd made two new cards: a Sideswipe and a Blurr.
Sideswipe was a red mech-warrior from the Transformers series — a fast Autobot who could transform into a sports car. Blurr was similar: blue, sleek, built for speed. Both were Tier 1 cards, but their real value was transport.
He planned to test out combined deployment next session.
It was worth noting that after several days of intensive card-making, his Mental Strength had climbed by 5 points to 205.
Mental Strength was primarily improved through meditation and card-making. But the original body's condition hadn't been great, so progress was slow. Jake, despite having worse cards, already had Mental Strength above 240.
As for Psionic Energy — in this world, people were born with it. It grew naturally with age, but only to a point. Ethan's had capped at 200 by age fifteen and hadn't increased again until he learned the Basic Psionic Method in high school.
Since transmigrating, he hadn't practiced the Basic Psionic Method even once. He'd been so focused on card-making that he hadn't gotten around to it.
After dinner, he gave it a try. He practiced until drowsiness crept in, but Jake still hadn't returned to the dorm.
Between the Psionic cultivation and having burned most of his Mental Strength that afternoon, he slept exceptionally well.
He woke early the next morning and glanced at Jake's bed.
Empty. Still hadn't come back.
Strange. He's never stayed out all night. Did something happen?
Ethan checked his phone. No messages from Jake.
He opened the System interface instead. Last month's card rankings had concluded.
He had four Tier 1 cards, five Tier 2 cards, and two Tier 3 cards on the leaderboards.

These items were temporarily stored in System space — a pocket dimension that could only hold System-issued rewards. They couldn't be put back once withdrawn, so he examined them without taking anything out.
Third-Rank Special Card Base: Only the #1 ranker receives this. Stores more energy, offers broader creation parameters. Also the only base capable of producing Immortal-grade cards.
Fourth-Rank Phantasm Unicorn Essence Blood: A drop of essence blood from a Fourth-Rank Phantasm Unicorn. Usable as a card-making material.
System Special Membership Card: Grants membership status and unlocks hidden sections of the System.
Advanced Psionic Cultivation Method: Upon use, you automatically comprehend the advanced method — faster cultivation speed.
High-Level Card-Making Ink: Reduces Mental Strength consumption by 50% when making low-tier cards. Essential ink for crafting high-level cards.
Second-Rank Magic Beast Spirit Core: Usable as material or exchangeable for Spirit Crystals.
The rewards seemed to aggregate across all rankings. Generous was an understatement.
The Essence Blood alone could sell for at least 500 Spirit Crystals. And now he finally understood how Immortal-grade cards were made — you needed a Special Card Base.
But the requirement was steep: rank #1 every month.
In the hundred years since the System appeared, that meant at most 1,200 Special Bases per tier had ever existed. That sounded like a lot — until you considered how few Card Makers could produce Gold cards, let alone Immortal-grade.
After reviewing everything, Ethan checked the newly unlocked special sections.

The Auction House ran on the first evening of every month. Items went to the highest bidder. Today was the day, but the time hadn't come yet.
The Special Mall sold materials and some cards, but the prices were eye-watering. He couldn't afford anything right now. It refreshed weekly — still a few days until the next rotation.
Then he opened the Special Chat Group.
Over eight hundred members.
When he joined, people were already chatting.
