Chapter 88 - Home Bound

Elis

I stood transfixed, my heart pounding in my chest, as Lily's light dimmed to a steady glow. The battlefield; scarred, smoldering, and heavy with the ashes of war—was silent except for the last whisper of Zal's scream. His body had sizzled away into nothing, turned to dust that scattered like smoke in the wind. And with it… the curse.

I could feel it.

The invisible chains that had bound my bloodline for generations; the venom Zal had poisoned into my veins since birth, snapped apart in an instant. My wolf surged forward within me, no longer crippled or chained. For the first time since I could remember, my chest expanded freely, lungs drinking in air as though I had been drowning all my life and had finally surfaced. Freedom. It nearly brought me to my knees.

My eyes lifted and found Lily. She was moving toward me, every step deliberate, every breath gilded in power. Her hair shimmered, streaked with moonlight as if the heavens themselves had crowned her. Her eyes burned brighter than fire, deeper than oceans, carrying the weight of all her inheritances; witch, Selkie, and light itself. Yet… despite the transformation, despite the overwhelming otherworldliness that clung to her, she was still Lily. My Lily.

The circle of protection around me, the one she had anchored to shield me through the storm of Zal's wrath, fizzled out as she drew near. Without the barrier between us, I felt her fully, raw and real. My wolf howled inside, recognizing her not only as mate but as savior.

She stopped so close I could feel the warmth radiating from her, the glow of her victory wrapping around me. Our eyes locked, and the world; blood, dust, fire, ghosts, witches, wolves, humans, fell away. I studied her face, drinking in the changes that made her divine and the familiarity that made her mine. My gaze slipped down, unbidden, to her lips.

And then she moved and leaned in. Her lips pressed softly to mine, a kiss filled not with haste or desperation, but with finality. With promise. With eternity. I exhaled into her, wrapping my arms around her waist, pulling her against me. My lips answered hers, claiming and surrendering at once. The taste of her was freedom, light, and the end of war.

When at last we parted, the battlefield erupted. Cheers broke the silence; claps, howls, laughter. My ears caught the joyous cries of my brothers, the wolves, Douglas and the two Alphas pounding their fists to the earth in victory. The witches; Ita, Imo, Eva, screamed and wept, holding each other tightly, their bond glowing brighter in triumph. The humans, Nakoa and his diviners, raised their staffs high, their chants now songs of praise.

And the ghosts—oh, the ghosts. Miriam bowed her proud, spectral head at her granddaughter's power. James, her Selkie father, shimmered with pride, his essence singing with the sea. Jim Marlick, my grandfather, the man who had borne the curse first, looked at me with tears brimming in spectral eyes, the torment that had haunted him finally lifted.

All of them; every soul, every spirit, every wolf, every witch, celebrated. Not just for the defeat of Zal. But for life, for love, for freedom. And in the center of it all, Lily and I stood locked in each other's arms, bound forever by more than fate.

I felt it before I saw it; the sudden weakening of her aura, the faltering rhythm of her breath. Lily pulled back from me, her lips still a lingering fire on mine, and staggered. The light in her hair dimmed as her body gave way.

"Lily!" The name ripped from me as I lunged forward, catching her before she struck the earth. Her weight was frighteningly light in my arms. Tika's mournful howl split the silence, echoing across the ruined battlefield like a dirge.

Within moments, the circle closed in; Miriam, James, Nakoa, Douglas, every being drawn by the sight of her fallen form.

Miriam knelt, her hands hovering over Lily's chest. Her voice trembled with awe and worry. "The powers she had wielded for two endless days; the Selkie's ocean song and the Grand Witch's eternal flame are too vast and primal to be contained in one vessel. The powers she carried were too much for a mortal frame. They've drained her… she will need time to rest and recover."

James's scared face darkened with solemnity. "Moonbinding exacts its price. Too much power and too fast, it burns the body from within." His eyes flickered to me, warning and reverence mixed.

My arms tightened around her. "Then she will rest with me in the palace."

But the witches stirred, their robes still smelling of fire and herbs. One stepped forward, her chin lifted. "She is one of us now. She belongs in the coven, where she will be watched, protected and healed."

Nakoa's voice thundered above them, fervent, unyielding and with a hint of amusement. "No. She is my goddess. She was born to be worshipped, and it is my altar that must cradle her spirit. I will take her home. She must remain with me."

A growl rumbled from deep in my chest before I knew it. "Over my dead body."

The air thickened. For a heartbeat, it seemed war might flare anew. But then Douglas laughed, a rough, battle-worn sound that cracked the tension. "Careful, Nakoa. Alpha king doesn't share."

Others chuckled, the tension easing. The witches shook their heads, bemused, and one of them muttered, "He's already marked her. It seems the choice is made."

The ghosts drifted close, their forms glowing faintly with the last embers of night. One by one they blessed us.

James's eyes lingered on Lily. "You've done well, my daughter. Hold fast to the light within you. It will guide you through every shadow."

Miriam smiled, her voice tender. "Elis, care for her. Lily, trust him. Together, you'll weave a life worth every struggle."

Then my grandfather Jim Marlick, towering yet gentle, fixed his gaze on me. "My son, the curse is broken. Lead with strength, love without fear, and honor our name. I'm proud of you."

Their figures shimmered, growing faint as morning light poured in. A hush fell as the last of their glow dissolved into the wind.

The witches promised to stay in touch before melting into the shadow.

The humans, wide-eyed with awe, bowed low to Lily and shaked my hand before turning back to their homes, the war finally was over.

When the field was empty, it was only us; my loyal Beta and my Alphas, my pack, my blood.

Douglas gave me a nod. "We ride."

I shifted, fur bursting from skin, bones cracking, Tika taking hold with the sweet ache of freedom. Around me, my brothers followed, massive beasts cloaked in silver and gold.

I bent low, and Douglas lifted Lily's still form, laying her carefully across my back. Her hand fell against my fur, held tight, and the faint warmth of her touch ignited something primal in me.

I howled once—a call of victory, of possession, of love and the pack answered in unison. Together, we galloped into the night, carrying her home.

Marlick's palace awaited. And this time, I swore, she would not suffer alone.
