NARRATIVE
She tells him at dinner.
They're at his penthouse, in the dining room that overlooks the city, and she's been watching him all evening with an expression that suggests she's been waiting for the right moment. He's noticed. He's been noticing everything about her for five weeks now. The micro-expressions, the shifts in her breathing, the way she positions her body.
She's been planning to tell him something.
"I got the role," she says. She's eating pasta, not looking at him. "The one Leny's been pushing me toward. 'Bare Truth.' They offered it to me today."
His fork stops moving.
"That's..." he starts, but he doesn't finish because he's processing. "That's the film with the nude scenes."
"Yes," she says. She takes a sip of wine. Still not looking at him.
"Full nudity?"
"Yes."
He sets down his fork carefully. He's trying very hard to control his reaction, which is a futile effort because she can already see it playing across his face.
"I see," he says.
"Do you?" She finally looks at him, and her eyes are bright. She's enjoying this. She's enjoying watching him struggle with the knowledge that other people are going to see her naked. "Because I'm not sure you do."
"Roman—"
"I haven't accepted yet," she says. "But I'm going to. I wanted to tell you first because I know how you feel about it."
"How I feel about it?" His voice is controlled but there's an edge underneath. "How I feel about it doesn't matter. It's your career."
"Exactly," she says. "It's my career. And I'm going to do it."
He stands up and walks away from the table. Goes to the window and looks out at the city lights.
"There will be another actor," he says quietly. "A man. He'll be naked with you."
"Yes."
"And you'll be touching him."
"It's choreographed," she says. "Very professional."
"I don't care if it's choreographed," he says. He turns back to face her. "I don't care if it's professional. I care that you're going to take off your clothes for cameras, and those images are going to exist forever, and every man who watches that film is going to have seen you completely exposed."
She sets down her fork.
"I know," she says.
"And that doesn't bother you?"
"It bothers me in the way that all vulnerability bothers me," she says. "But I'm going to do it anyway because it's a good role and I'm a good actress and I deserve the opportunity to do challenging work."
"I never said you didn't."
"You're implying it," she says. She stands up now, and she walks toward him. "You're implying that I should care more about how you feel about my body than about my career."
"That's not what I'm saying."
"Then what are you saying?"
He reaches out and takes her face in his hands. Her skin is warm under his palms, and he can feel the slight tension in her jaw.
"I'm saying," he says slowly, "that the thought of other men seeing you like that is making me want to lock you in this apartment and never let you leave."
She smiles.
"I know," she says. "That's why I'm doing it."
He releases her face and steps back.
"You're doing this to test me," he says.
"I'm doing this because it's my job," she corrects him. "And yes, partially because I'm interested in seeing how you handle it. Because if you can't handle me doing nude scenes for a film, then you can't handle me being an actress at all."
"I can handle you being an actress," he says. "What I can't handle is the thought of you naked in front of another man."
"Get used to it," she says. "Because it's happening."

He doesn't argue with her anymore after that.
He accepts it because he understands that pushing would be the wrong move. That trying to control her would only push her further away. That this is her career and her choice, and he has to respect that even though it's slowly destroying him.
But that doesn't mean he's not affected.

Over the next two weeks, he watches the reality of what's coming settle into their relationship.
She's excited about the role. She reads the script obsessively. She talks to Leny about the character, the arc, the nude scenes specifically. She wants to understand why the nudity matters to the story, how it serves the character, what the emotional truth of those moments needs to be.
He listens to all of this and tries not to think about the fact that soon, she'll be standing on a film set, completely naked, in front of cast and crew and cameras.
One night, they're in bed, and he's wrapped around her from behind, his arm across her waist, his face in her hair.
"You're going to hate it," she says. "Watching me do the nude scenes."
"Yes," he agrees.
"But you're going to let me do it anyway."
"Yes," he says again.
"Why?"
He's quiet for a moment. "Because I love you. And because you're right—if I can't handle this, I can't handle you."
She turns around in his arms so she's facing him.
"I'm doing this partly because I'm a good actress and I want the role," she says. "But also partly because I want you to see me be vulnerable in front of the world. I want you to know that I belong to you so completely that I can strip myself bare. Literally, in front of thousands of people, and it won't matter. Because at the end of the day, I'm coming back to you."
He kisses her, and it's possessive and desperate and completely consuming.
"I know," he says. "That's the only reason I'm letting you do this."

The night before filming begins on the nude scenes, she comes to him.
They're at his apartment, and she's wearing his shirt, nothing underneath, and she's deliberately teasing him with the knowledge of what's coming.
"Tomorrow," she says, climbing into his lap on the couch, "another man is going to see me naked."
His hands tighten on her hips.
"I know…and I hate it."
She grinds down slightly. "You want to mark me. You want everyone on that set to know you've been here."
"Yes." Something in his eyes goes dark. "You don't know what you're asking for."
"Do it anyway." She leans in, bites his lower lip.
He leans down, puts his mouth on her neck. Bites down. Not hard enough to really hurt, but hard enough that it'll bruise. She gasps.
"Here?" he asks against her skin.
"Yes."
By the time he's done, she's covered in marks. Neck, shoulders, chest, thighs. Evidence everywhere.
She looks at herself in the bathroom mirror after. Touches one of the bruises on her collarbone.
"The makeup team is going to lose their minds."
"Good," he says from the doorway.
