Chapter 17 - Giant Fox

Adrian was resting in the quiet darkness of his shelter when a sharp crack split the night air outside.

A stick had snapped.

The sound was not loud, but in the stillness of the forest it might as well have been thunder.

Adrian's body reacted before conscious thought formed. He immediately coiled tighter, lifting his head and aligning his body in a defensive posture. His muscles tensed, every scale alert. The entrance to his home was only a short distance away, and no shape had yet crossed it.

No one was inside.

Slowly, carefully, Adrian raised his head toward the opening and extended it just enough to see outside. He did not expose his full body, only the smallest portion necessary to assess the situation.

It was still night.

Darkness blanketed the forest, but to Adrian the world was far from black. Through his infrared vision, heat signatures painted the landscape in varying shades of red and orange.

And there, less than thirty meters away, stood a large, bright red silhouette.

Adrian froze.

It was bigger than any creature he had fought before. The heat radiating from it was intense, steady, powerful. Judging by its proportions, it had to be at least 80 centimeters tall and nearly a 1.5 meters long from snout to tail.

Its shape was unmistakable.

It resembled a fox, but far larger than any ordinary fox should be.

The creature moved with slow, deliberate steps, its head lowered slightly as it sniffed the ground. Its tail swayed behind it in controlled arcs. Even at a distance, Adrian could sense the contained strength within its frame.

This was not prey.

This was a predator.

Adrian's instincts urged him to withdraw immediately. There was no reason to engage. He had food in his system. He had evolution points stored. Fighting something of that size in open terrain would be reckless.

He began to ease backward into his shelter,

And then the fox's head snapped up.

Its glowing silhouette turned sharply.

It was looking directly at him.

For a fraction of a second, neither of them moved.

Then the fox lunged forward.

It sprinted straight toward his position, its body low and streamlined. Each stride closed the distance rapidly, paws barely seeming to touch the ground.

Adrian retreated instantly.

He pulled himself fully back into the tunnel and coiled tightly in the far corner, positioning his body so that he had both space to strike and room to withdraw if necessary. The entrance was narrow, deliberately chosen for that reason, but not impenetrable.

A moment later, the fox reached the opening.

Its snout forced its way inside, pushing against the hard stone. The tunnel was too small to admit its entire head, but that did not stop it from trying. Its hot breath flooded the interior, carrying the scent of fresh blood and wild fur.

Claws scraped against the outer edge of the entrance as it tried to widen the gap.

Adrian waited.

The fox shoved its nose farther in, probing.

That was the opening he needed.

With explosive speed, Adrian launched forward and sank his fangs into the very tip of the fox's nose. He bit deep, injecting venom before immediately retreating backward.

The fox let out a sharp, enraged yelp and jerked its head away violently.

But the attack did not end there.

Instead of retreating fully, the fox thrust one of its forelegs into the opening, its paw sweeping wildly inside the tunnel. Long claws slashed through the confined space, gouging furrows into the earth. The reach was frighteningly long, long enough that one careless movement could result in Adrian being hooked and dragged out.

Adrian narrowly avoided the first swipe.

The he activated Shadow Bind.

Darkness thickened unnaturally around the fox's extended limb. From the shadow beneath its body, black restraints erupted upward, wrapping around its paw and lower leg. The sudden force halted the chaotic swiping mid-motion.

Adrian did not hesitate.

He darted forward again, this time biting down hard on the fox's leg. Venom flowed into the muscle as he struck repeatedly, once, twice, three times, before withdrawing again.

The fox snarled, twisting violently.

Unlike the smaller prey he had faced before, this creature possessed far greater strength. The shadow restraints trembled under strain.

Then they shattered.

The fox tore free in less than three seconds.

Adrian felt the drain on his mana as the spell collapsed. Without pause, he activated Shadow Bind again.

Dark chains erupted once more, restraining the limb just as it lashed inward.

He struck again.

Venom injected.

Retreat.

The fox broke free again.

Adrian recast the spell.

Strike.

Retreat.

Each activation consumed more of his dwindling mana reserves. The fox's struggles grew more frantic, its snarls echoing through the tunnel. Dirt scattered. Claws scraped closer and closer to Adrian's body with every attempt.

The air inside the shelter grew thick with the scent of blood and aggression.

This cycle continued, bind, bite, break, bind again, until Adrian's mana reserves dropped dangerously low.

When he checked instinctively, he saw that he only had three MP remaining.

He stopped.

He could not afford another cast.

He didn't want to drain his MP to zero in case he needed to use conceal to escape.

The fox finally wrenched its paw completely free and stumbled backward from the entrance. For a brief moment, it stood outside, breathing heavily.

Then it turned and attempted to run.

It managed only a few strides.

The moment it placed weight on its envenomed leg, its body faltered. Its movements became uneven, uncoordinated. The venom had spread through its bloodstream far more slowly than it would have in smaller prey, but it had spread nonetheless.

The fox collapsed onto its side.

It tried to rise again, claws digging into the dirt. Its muscles trembled violently. Instead of standing, it began dragging itself forward, attempting to crawl away from the threat it could not see.

Survival instinct drove it.

Adrian did not allow that instinct to succeed.

He surged out of his shelter for the first time since the fight had begun. The open night air felt cold against his scales as he closed the distance quickly.

The fox's rear legs were exposed.

Adrian struck them both in rapid succession, driving more venom into already weakened tissue. The fox let out a strained growl, but its body was no longer responding properly. Its limbs twitched uselessly.

Within seconds, its movements slowed.

Then stopped.

Silence returned to the forest.

A faint glow appeared before Adrian's vision.

[+21 Evolution Points]

He stared at the fallen predator for a long moment.

Twenty-one points.

More than any single creature had granted him before.

Yet as he looked at the large body lying before him, Adrian understood something clearly.

If this fight had occurred anywhere else, out in the open, away from his narrow shelter, he would likely be dead.

The fox had been faster. Stronger. More durable. It had broken Shadow Bind repeatedly. In direct combat, he would not have survived.

He had won because of terrain.

Because of preparation.

Because the entrance had been too small.

That realization did not fill him with pride.

It filled him with caution.

Adrian examined the corpse more closely. The fox was massive compared to him. Even if he attempted to consume it over several days, the body was too large to maneuver. Dragging it into his shelter was impossible.

And leaving it here posed another problem.

The scent of blood was already spreading through the night air.

Scavengers would come.

Other predators would follow.

Some might be larger than this fox.

His current shelter, once a place of safety, would soon become a beacon for danger.

Adrian looked back toward the entrance of his home.

It had protected him tonight.

But staying would be foolish.

He needed to relocate.

He needed a new shelter.

Without another glance at the corpse, Adrian turned away from the fallen fox and began assessing the surrounding terrain in the darkness.

He would move before dawn.

He would not allow this victory to become his downfall.
