Chapter 5 - First Evolution

Adrian's unhinged jaw snapped forward and locked around the insect before it could react. Its legs scraped uselessly against his lips for a fraction of a second before disappearing past his fangs. In one smooth motion, he adjusted his grip and swallowed. The movement was efficient, almost mechanical. There was no excitement in it, no triumph. Only completion.

He remained still afterward.

Waiting.

The forest continued as normal around him. Leaves rustled lightly in the breeze. Somewhere above, a bird shifted on a branch. None of it mattered. His focus was internal.

A faint pulse flickered across his vision.

[+0.1 Evolution Points]

The familiar notification appeared exactly as expected.

Ten.

He had reached ten evolution points after days of patient hunting.

There was no outward reaction. No rush of relief. Just confirmation. The number in his mind settled into place with quiet satisfaction.

Without hesitation, Adrian retreated. He did not linger in the open any longer than necessary. Evolution, if it involved vulnerability, would not be done under the sky. He moved quickly but carefully, slipping through moss and beneath fallen leaves before sliding back into the hollow at the base of the tree.

Only once his entire body was concealed did he pause.

Safe enough.

Inside the hollow, the air was still and slightly warmer than outside. He coiled into a comfortable but vigilant positioned and steadied his breathing.

Then he opened his status.

The translucent window formed before him, and his gaze moved instantly to the Evolution Store.

Species Evolution.

He selected it without hesitation. There was no need to simulate doubt or nervousness. No peers to observe him. No expectations to maintain. This was not a performance.

The moment his choice registered, a new notification appeared.

[Commencing minor species evolution]

[Evolving into Adult Emerald Viper]

For a brief second, nothing happened.

Then the change began.

Heat.

It started deep within his core, subtle at first, like warmth from sunlight. Then it intensified. His muscles tightened involuntarily. His scales felt as if they were being pressed outward from beneath.

His vision blurred.

The hollow seemed to tilt slightly, or perhaps that was his perception shifting. His body felt both heavy and distant at the same time.

Growth.

He could feel it now. A stretching sensation along his spine. His ribs expanding. Muscles thickening. It was not pain exactly, but it was not comfortable either. It was pressure. Expansion forced upon every part of him.

His jaw twitched slightly as venom glands pulsed with unfamiliar energy. His fangs tingled.

His thoughts began to slow.

The heat intensified further, spreading through every inch of his body. His coils tightened reflexively as if bracing against the transformation.

This is the system rewriting me.

The idea surfaced faintly before being swallowed by the overwhelming sensation.

His heartbeat quickened, then steadied into something deeper. Stronger.

His awareness flickered.

The hollow felt smaller already, though he could not fully confirm it. His body was heavier against the wood. Denser.

His eyelids drooped.

Consciousness slipped like sand through his grasp. The last thing he registered was the steady hum of energy pulsing through his veins.

Then everything went dark.

Time passed.

How long, he could not tell.

When awareness returned, it came gradually. Sensation returned first. The texture of wood against his scales. The confined pressure of the hollow around him.

Something was wrong.

He shifted slightly.

The movement felt different.

Stronger.

He opened his eyes fully.

The hollow that once accommodated him comfortably now pressed tightly against his body. His coils overlapped more densely. When he extended slightly, his head brushed the opposite wall sooner than expected.

He had grown larger

Ignoring the discomfort, Adrian focused inward and reopened his status window.

[Status

Name: Adrian Vale

Species: Adult Emerald Viper

Age: 14 days

Evolution Points: 0

Length: 35 cm

Diameter: 3 cm

Abilities: Mild Venom, Constrict, Infrared Vision, Chemoreception]

[Evolution Store]

Thirty five centimeters.

From ten to thirty five.

His diameter had tripled as well.

He shifted again, testing his muscles. The difference was undeniable. His body felt solid. Dense with strength compared to before. When he flexed slightly, the movement carried weight.

Adult Emerald Viper.

So the evolution did not change his species entirely. It advanced his stage within it.

He flicked his tongue experimentally. The chemical data that returned felt sharper. More refined. His venom glands throbbed faintly when he focused on them.

Mild venom.

Likely improved from before.

He allowed the faintest curve to form at the corner of his mouth. Not joy. Not pride. Just acknowledgement.

Progress.

Still, he was nowhere near massive. Thirty five centimeters was larger, but far from dominant. Compared to the memory of his mother, he was insignificant.

She had been far larger. Thicker. Stronger.

Perhaps she was a different species entirely.

The thought did not frustrate him. It provided direction.

There was more above him.

After reviewing his physical changes, Adrian shifted his focus to the Evolution Store once more.

[Evolution Store:

Increase Length 2 cm: 1 Evo pt

Increase Diameter 2 cm: 1 Evo pt

Improve Venom: 10 Evo pts

Species Evolution: 50 Evo pts]

He studied the differences carefully.

Before, length and diameter increases had been only one centimeter per point. Now it was two.

Efficiency scaling upward.

His base body had improved, so incremental growth offered greater returns.

Improve Venom now cost ten points.

It had previously been lower.

His venom had likely strengthened automatically during evolution. Further improvements now required greater investment.

Then his gaze settled on the final line.

Species Evolution: 50 Evo pts.

A drastic increase from ten.

Minor evolution had been inexpensive. Advancement within the same species.

Maybe this signaled that the next evolution wouldn't be a so called minor one.

Fifty points suggested a true leap. Possibly into an entirely different classification.

The system was making it clear.

As he got stronger and evolved more the amount of effort to improve would increase at the same time.

Adrian closed the window slowly.

Ten points had transformed him from a fragile hatchling to a functional predator.

Fifty would transform him again.

His body pressed uncomfortably against the hollow walls as he shifted.

This space would no longer suffice.

And neither would his current strength.

He had evolved.

But this was only the beginning.
