Chapter 26 - Close Enough

The morning light filtered softly through the curtains, painting golden streaks across the bedroom. Eliana stirred first, blinking against the brightness, and for a moment, she froze. The warmth she had felt last night lingered, a gentle echo she hadn't expected to carry into the day.

Then she realized she wasn't alone.

Sebastian was still there, lying on his side, watching her with a look she had never fully seen — soft, unguarded, and utterly hers. His dark hair fell in gentle waves over his forehead, and when he caught her gaze, he let a small, almost mischievous smile tug at the corners of his mouth.

"Morning," he said quietly, and his voice sounded different today — like it had been softened by the night they had shared, like the world had shifted just enough for him to be real.

"Morning," she breathed, a little shy, a little fluttering inside. She wanted to say so much more, but the words stuck in her throat.

Instead, she did the boldest thing she could think of: she leaned over and pressed a quick, tentative kiss to his lips. Just a brush. Just a question.

Sebastian's eyes widened, just slightly, before his hand shot up to cup her face. "Eliana," he murmured, his tone husky with emotion, "you—"

But she silenced him with another kiss, this one lingering a fraction longer, teasing, testing. And then she pulled back, just enough to meet his gaze, heart racing.

He didn't pull away. He didn't say anything. He just watched her, and in his eyes, she saw the unspoken truth — that last night had changed everything, even if neither of them admitted it yet.

Finally, he exhaled, a soft laugh escaping him, and it made her heart leap. "I don't know if I should let you do that," he said, but the corner of his lips curved upward in a way that made her stomach flip.

"Shouldn't?" she teased, a playful glint in her eye. "Or won't?"

He caught her hand and held it, warm and sure. "Won't," he admitted, voice low and full of promise.

For a moment, they just stayed like that, caught between the morning light and the quiet thrill of being near each other — two people learning, slowly, that closeness didn't have to be frightening. That being chosen could feel like home.

And for Eliana, that realization was worth everything.
