The Clifftop District's streets were quieter than Mission Gate Zone. Players who'd cleared their first Mandatory Missions moved with visible exhaustion, the weight of surviving real permadeath settling into shoulders and spines. No one celebrated. Some looked shell-shocked. Others walked with the grim satisfaction of people who'd passed a test they couldn't afford to fail.
Riri and Samael moved through the foot traffic. The rose-gold [BONDED] tags above their heads drew attention. Level 22 markers drew more. Players who'd spent forty-seven minutes clearing C-Rank content. While most of the Hub had struggled through E-Rank dungeons for hours.
The Sanctuary materialized when they crossed the threshold. Familiar space, expensive furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows showing the city below.
Kirin moved past Riri toward the sectional, tail dragging with exhaustion. Loki padded to his water bowl in the kitchen. Vesper disappeared into shadow, likely finding somewhere to sleep. Vermillion drifted to the windowsill, six butterflies settling into dormant formation.
All four companions were done for the day. No injuries, but the sustained combat had worn them down.
Good clear. Clean extraction. No complications.
Samael moved to the kitchen and pulled two water bottles from the refrigerator. He tossed one to Riri. She caught it without looking, muscle memory from three weeks of coordinated movement.
She drank half in one go. Her Stamina read full according to the interface, but her body still registered exertion. The corruption aura's damage, sustained shadow-stepping, forty-seven minutes of combat focus without pause. The stats said she was fine. Her nervous system needed time to catch up.
Samael finished his water and set the empty bottle on the counter. "Status check."
Riri pulled up her interface.
[Riri Lee - Level 22 | Class: Beast Tamer (Unique - SSS)]
[HP: 844/844 | MP: 1,680/1,680 | Stamina: 546/546]
[Combat Power: 15,187]
[Active Companions: 4/4 | Bonded Creatures: 4/12]
[Credits: 334,963 (Shared Pool)]
[Available Stat Points: 30]
She'd leveled twice. Thirty points waiting for allocation. The C-Rank Loot Boxes had given her A-Grade equipment upgrades that pushed her Combat Power over fifteen thousand. Kirin had gained three levels from sharing mission experience without participating.
"Distribute now or wait?" she asked.
"Now." Samael was already accessing his own interface. "Before the second mission tomorrow."
Smart. Stat allocation took time to settle. Better to do it with a full night's rest ahead rather than right before deployment.
Riri considered her current build. The Shadow-Weave set gave her Agility. Crimson Fang rewarded precision over raw power. Beast Tamer scaled with Charisma for companion bonding and Intelligence for tactical coordination.
She'd been building glass cannon since Day 1. High damage, high mobility, minimal defense. It worked because Samael absorbed aggro and her companions provided coverage. But C-Rank content had shown her the math. The corruption aura had ticked fifty damage per second. Another rank higher and that number would double. Eventually she'd hit content where staying alive required more than dodging.
Constitution needed investment.
She allocated the points.
[Strength: 112]
[Agility: 337]
[Constitution: 123 → 143]
[Intelligence: 206 → 211]
[Wisdom: 97 → 102]
[Charisma: 328]
[Luck: 225]
Twenty points to Constitution. Five to Intelligence. Five to Wisdom. She needed the HP buffer. The Intelligence and Wisdom split would increase her MP pool for longer missions.
[Allocation Complete]
[New Stats:]
[HP: 844 → 1,044]
[MP: 1,680 → 1,890]
[Combat Power: 15,187 → 16,342]
Heat spread through her body. Her bones ached for five seconds, pressure building and releasing. Her heartbeat steadied. When the feeling faded, her breathing came easier.
Over sixteen thousand Combat Power. Two hundred more HP. She'd survive another fifteen seconds in the corruption aura now. Not much, but enough when the margins were that tight.
Samael had finished his own allocation. Through the Bond she felt his satisfaction. Whatever build he was running, the numbers had landed where he'd wanted them.
"Second mission parameters," he said.
Riri dismissed her Status and moved to the sectional. Kirin shifted to make room, his tail wrapping around her ankle when she sat. Loki settled at her feet. Vesper materialized on the armrest. Vermillion drifted to the windowsill.
"C-Rank again," she said.
Samael remained standing, watching the city through the windows. "Today was objective-based. Corruption anchor with boss defense. Tomorrow should be survival or escort."
"Escort missions have NPC mechanics." She'd read the briefing. "If the NPC dies, mission fails."
"Then we keep them alive."
Simple. Direct. The kind of statement that assumed competence as baseline and didn't waste time on contingencies they couldn't predict until deployment.
Riri pulled up the Mission Gate interface. The C-Rank section showed eight available missions, their descriptions minimal.
[Haunted Asylum - C-Rank], [Survive 6 Hours].
[Merchant Caravan - C-Rank], [Escort to Safe Zone].
[Collapsed Laboratory - C-Rank], [Retrieve Research Data].
The escort mission looked straightforward. Protect an NPC convoy through hostile territory. Higher chance of ambush encounters but lower environmental hazard compared to the asylum's psychological horror elements.
"Merchant Caravan," she said.
"Agreed." Samael confirmed.
They had the same assessment.
System #2's interface drifted into view, particles swirling.
[Host! Congratulations on your first Mandatory Mission clear! This unit is very proud! ♡]
[Performance evaluation shows perfect coordination with your Bonded partner. Zero errors in tactical execution. Optimal companion deployment. And the speed bonus was excellent!]
"Thank you," Riri said.
[Now, this unit recommends rest. Your Constitution upgrade will integrate better with adequate sleep. Tomorrow's mission has different parameters, and escort objectives require sustained attention over longer periods.]
[Shall this unit set an alarm for 6:00 AM?]
"Five-thirty," Riri said. "We're meeting at the Gate at six-fifteen."
[Acknowledged! ♡]
The interface faded.
Samael moved toward the hallway. He stopped at the entrance and turned back.
"You allocated Constitution," he said.
Not a question. He'd been tracking her choices through the Bond, the same way she'd felt his satisfaction with his own build adjustments.
"The corruption aura could of been bad with my HP pool," she said. "I thought it best to focus Constitution for the next few levels."
Through the Bond she felt approval. The specific quality of someone who'd run the same calculations and found her conclusion sound.
He continued down the hallway to shower first.
Riri sat on the sectional for another minute, Kirin's bulk warming the cushions beside her, Loki stretched on the floor. The city lights filtered through the windows, bathing the living area in soft gold.
Forty-seven minutes. Two levels. Perfect clear. No deaths.
First Mandatory Mission: survived.
The water shut off. Samael emerged fifteen minutes later in sleep pants and nothing else, heading toward their bedroom without comment.
Riri stood and moved down the hallway. Their bed was already turned down, sheets crisp and clean, the System anticipating her needs. She stripped off the Shadow-Weave set and hung it in the closet beside Samael's tactical gear. The A-Grade Boots of Swift Shadows went on the shelf beside Crimson Fang.
The shower was hot and lasted exactly as long as she needed. When she emerged, Samael was already in bed, eyes closed, his breathing pattern suggesting he wasn't quite asleep yet. Loki had claimed the floor at the foot of the bed. Vesper materialized on the dresser. Vermillion settled on the windowsill. Kirin had wedged himself into the reading chair in the corner, his juvenile bulk fitting awkwardly but his determination absolute.
Riri set the alarm and slid under the covers. Samael's warmth radiated from his side of the bed, a familiar presence after three weeks of sharing space.
His mind was still running tomorrow's scenarios, encounter probabilities and formation adjustments cycling through thoughts she could feel at the edge of the Bond.
The Bond hummed between them, steady and constant.
She closed her eyes.
Sleep came easy.
---
The alarm went off at 5:30 AM.
Riri silenced it and rolled out of bed in one smooth motion. No grogginess, no hesitation. The Constitution boost had integrated overnight, her body settling into the new HP threshold without resistance.
She pulled up her Status while moving to the closet.
[Riri Lee - Level 22 | Class: Beast Tamer (Unique - SSS)]
[HP: 1,044/1,044 | MP: 1,890/1,890 | Stamina: 546/546]
Full across the board. Clean slate.
The Shadow-Weave set went on in practiced sequence. Pants, jacket, boots, gloves. The fabric moved with her like it had been tailored specifically for her movements. Crimson Fang settled at her hip. The Boots of Swift Shadows added their passive bonus, shadow-step cooldown reduction stacking with her existing Agility.
She braided her hair back and checked her inventory. Health potions restocked. Mana potions full. Consumables ready.
Loki waited by the door when she emerged, Vesper already on his back. Vermillion descended from the ceiling. Kirin padded out from the living area, determination mixed with residual annoyance pulsing through the Bond.
"You're coming today," Riri said.
His tail swung once.
Samael was in the kitchen, already dressed in dark tactical gear. Coffee in one hand, his new blade at his hip. He looked at her, assessed readiness in under a second, and nodded.
They left the Sanctuary together, moving through the Clifftop District's morning quiet. The streets were emptier than yesterday. Players who'd cleared their first Mandatory Missions were either still sleeping or taking the day to recover. The ones who were out moved with purpose, heading toward the Mission Gate Zone or the System Mall.
The Mission Gate Zone came into view ten minutes later.
The C-Rank section held fewer Players than yesterday. Eight available missions, but most of the crowd had clustered around the easier content. [Haunted Asylum] had a small group studying its inactive portal. [Collapsed Laboratory] had two Players in quiet discussion.
[Merchant Caravan] stood empty except for Riri and Samael.
The containment barrier pulsed with suppressed portal energy, script running along its surface in continuous loops. The mission description floated above the dormant Gate in gold text.
[MERCHANT CARAVAN - RANK C]
[Objective: Escort convoy to Safe Zone]
[Estimated Duration: 4-6 hours]
[Minimum Players: 2 | Maximum Players: 8]
[Warning: Ambush encounters likely]
[Warning: NPC death = Mission Failure]
Four to six hours. Longer than yesterday's village clear but still manageable if they maintained pace. Ambush encounters meant combat spread across the duration rather than concentrated boss mechanics.
The NPC death clause was the risk. One mistake, one missed threat, and the mission failed regardless of their performance.
Samael studied the Gate. "Formation will be split. You take rear guard with Loki. I'll handle vanguard with kinetic area denial. Vesper scouts ahead. Vermillion maintains HP coverage on the NPC."
"Kirin?"
"Aerial support. Lightning strikes on clustered enemies." He glanced at the drake, who'd been listening through the Bond. "Can he maintain altitude for six hours?"
Kirin's presence pulsed affirmative. His Stamina pool had grown with his recent level gains. Sustained flight was possible now.
"Good." Samael turned back to the Gate. "We deploy in thirty seconds."
Riri pulled up the mission interface and confirmed entry.
[MERCHANT CARAVAN - RANK C]
[Confirm Entry? Y/N]
She pressed YES.
The containment barrier dropped. The Gate activated, portal energy surging from dormant to active in three seconds. Gold light spilled across the plaza, bright enough to make her squint.
Samael walked into it without hesitation.
Riri followed, Loki at her side, Vesper on her shoulder, Vermillion orbiting her head, Kirin padding behind with wings half-spread.
The light swallowed them.
The world reformed.
