Chapter 11 - First Lecture-3

"Well, Let's continue with the lecture."

"..."

"This is a simple magic circle."

A red coloured magic circle with a simple structure appeared on top of his hand.

Floating above his right hand.

"Mana , Magic circle , and Magical phenomenon."

"These are the only three components you need to understand inorder to become a mage."

"Mana is the cost that you pay to create a Magical phenomenon or rather Mana itself is converted into a Magical phenomenon."

I activated the magic circle in my hand, a palm sized flame appeared above the magic circle.

"I took some of my mana and converted it into a Magical phenomenon, that is this flame that appeared out of thin air."

"Now we know two of the components, the input and the output."

"The only thing left is the magic circle itself."

"A magic circle is nothing but a set of instructions."

"Instructions on: what to create?, how much of it to create?...And most importantly the properties of what will be created.."

"For example if I change the magic circle slightly."

The magic circle in my hand changed slightly with a bit more advanced design.

I activated the magic circle.

Again a flame appeared but this time it was in the shape of a swirling ball of fire.

"The basic structure corresponding to the what to create And how much to create remains same."

"What I changed was the part that defined the properties of the flames produced."

The students nodded with awe.

Even if they knew about the construction of magic circles nobody must have explained it so elaborately.

Especially the way Seeraphine and Aria looked at the magic circle, as if they finally understood something they had known but never fully grasped.

"Well I guess that's enough for Today."

"Does anybody have any questions?"

Aria hesitantly raised her hands.

"Yes?"

Aria stood up and was about to ask a question, but before she could speak a mocking voice came from the last row.

"Tch..A commoner is a commoner, she couldn't even understand such a basic concept, look at her asking questions."

Aria clenched her fists.

'It's always like this, nobles would always mock her. She too was once known as a genius but after her family's fall all she had ever received was disdain and mocking from nobles who once used to flock around her and praise her.'

'Everytime I am alone, by myself against nobles with power...but I won't back down. Never!, Even if it means getting demerits. She never once considered a high noble like Lucien would support her over another noble.'

Aria was about to retaliate but before she could she heard a cold voice.

"-5 demerits."

"..."

Aria trembled and retracted her gaze from the green haired noble.

She moved her gaze towards Lucien.

'I didn't even do anything, why was I the one to receive demeri...'

But when she saw that Lucien was not looking at her but at the green haired guy who just spoke, she felt suprised.

'N-not me?..'

"Who gave you permission to speak without raising your hand you fucking Broccoli headed bastard!"

Lucien said in a cold and raised voice.

Unable to control his anger over the stupid third rate green afro haired villain, who mocked the beloved protagonist of his favourite game.

The green haired extra looked at Lucien's cold gaze and shrank back, while leaking a strange girly scream.

"Eeek!.."

The entire classroom burst into laughter.

"Pfffft—Hahahaha"

"Hahaha"

The green haired mob turned red with embarassment.

But he dared not to complain. He could only glared at Aria.

Aria stood there dumbfounded.

'He supported me?..and even gave him a demerits...'

After a few seconds the laughter finnally died out.

Except for a individual who still couldn't stop giggling.

"You...the one next to Aria stop giggling."

Aria was stunned at the mention of her name.

'He knows my name?...why does he know my name?..did he really have a relation with my father's death? otherwise why would he remember the name of a commoner from a fallen house...'

"What was your name?...right Lucy"

"Eek!...I am sorry."

Lucy, a commoner girl sitting next to Aria stopped gigling when her name was mentioned.

And she being a bubbly and a little dumb girl actually asked Lucien.

"But how do you know my name?.."

"... aren't you a student in my class."

"Yes, sir!"

"So ofcourse I memorized the names of everyone before coming here."

Everyone was dumbfounded, A noble professor learning everyone's name that to including the commoners.

"Uh..even of a commoner like me?"

"What are you even on about?..what commoner, all of you are my students what does your background matter to me?"

'Ah..so that's why he knew my name?..'

Aria thought.

Everyone was suprised, this was not how the rumours portrayed him.

The commoners were all stunned, they never thought that they would be treated equally. That too from a noble with countless bad rumours.

'Who the hell is spreading rumours about such a kind noble!..'

All the commoners cursed the ones spreading rumours about Lucien.

Aria looked at me grateful and strange eyes.

While seraphine looked at me with respect and a bit of... admiration...Does she think of me as the ideal noble?

"Ahem..anyways what was your question Aria."

"Ah..umm as you were talking about the properties defined in the magical circles...What is the limit of the properties we can define. At what point does it get impossible for the properties defined to materialise?"

Her question invoked curiosity in everyone.

Especially Seraphine who was looking at me expectantly.

"..limits you say?..well there are no limits."

"Really?.."

At my statement seraphine raised her hand.

"Then why some theoratical spells can't be cast even by great mages."

"Well seraphine, let ask me ask you a question. Since you come from a noble mage family you must have learned atleast one high level magic out of curiosity that you can't cast, right?"

"Yes.."

"Then what happens when you try to cast that spell."

"Ah..I can construct the magical circle but when I try to manifest it nothing happens."

"And you have complete understanding of that particular spell."

"Yes!.. although I can't execute it I am confident I 100% understand it."

"Then you can construct the magical circle and have a complete understanding of the spell than the only component left is..."

I deliberately paused.

"Mana!....ahem.."

Seraphine said in an excited voice.but got embarrassed quickly.

"Yes. The reason you can't manifest the spell is because you don't have enough mana to be converted into the magical phenomenon."

"Well according to me there are only two conditions for a spell to fail to materialise."

"Either you don't have enough mana or you don't have enough understanding of the magical phenomenon you want to manifest and correspondingly the perfectly defined properties."

"So there are no limits to the scale of magic...except for the users lack of understanding and lack of mana."

The entire class looked as if they had heard some profound concepts.

"Then does that answer your questions? Aria and Seraphine."

"Yes.." they both said in unison.

Aria sat down but Seraphine still stood.

"What is it seraphine? Do you have another question?"

"Ah...um Professor you must know about the 8 unsolved natural magical phenomenons, I..actually have the dream of solving them...so could you possibly classify them into the two categories according to you..."

Seraphine fidgeted with the hem of her uniform. She knew it was an stupid and impossible dream. She had said the same to her family but they laughed at her for her dreams.

"What...even for her.. isn't that a bit too much?"

"Not even the Archmage and other reputed researchers and mages have been able to solve those mysteries.."

"And she wants to solve them all..."

"Even she's the top ranker isn't that a bit too arrogant.."

Many murmurs and whispers filled the classroom.

Seraphine stood with pride and indifferent face, but her fingers holding the hem of her uniform were clenched.

Seraphine knew it was a stupid dream but still she won't give up on them even with the mocking and disdain.

She looked at Lucien's indifferent face expecting him to laugh at her or mock her.

But her hands holding the hem of her dress loosened and her eyes were filled with surprise as she saw Lucien smile gently at her.

A smile and look that seemed to acknowledge her stupid and impossible dream.

"Quite the big dreams you have...Good luck, solving them."

He said in a indifferent but softer tone than before.

Seraphine was stunned at his words that encouraged her instead of mocking her, and believed in her rather than showing disdain.

Her heart started beating loudly as she felt quite happy as her dreams acknowledged for the first time.

"Omg! Did professor just smiled?.."

"He looked so handsome and gentlemenly..kyaa"

Some of the female students started fan-girling over Lucien.

"As for classifying them in detail, I am afraid as I said before I have to go to the magic academy to take the promotion exam so I don't have time."

"Ah..is that so?.."

Seraphine said in a flat tone but she was definitely disappointed.

"But I can give you a direct classification according to me."

Seraphine eyes sparkled after hearing him.

"According to me in the list by order of their appearance. Phenomenon number 2,3,6,7 comes under the lack of mana to manifest condition, while the others are due to lack of understanding."

"Ah..is that so."

Seraphine nodded.

I glanced at my watch.

"I guess I could explain one to you, how about the one that appeared the most recently."

"The 8th one, The eternal hellfire."

"A crack in the surface that continuesly spews Blue flames all year around. The blue flames are unusually hotter than normal fire."

"It might fall under the understanding classification cause though it spews infinite fire, the fire itself never burns eternally. it dies out like a normal fire would."

"So it shouldn't require extreme amounts of mana, the properties itself are similar to a normal flame except for a higher temperature and Blue colour."

"So the only thing left is understanding the reason for its blue colour when manifesting, right?"

"Y-yes.."

Seraphine was filled with awe. After listening to me deducing the classification on basis of simple but unrefutable observations.

"Then that's it for today's class, let's end it here."

I walked towards the door and opened the door but just before leaving I turned my head back and made eye contact with seraphine and said to her with a mischievous smile and a mysterious voice.

"Hmm...Student seraphine.."

"Y-yes."

"Your in for a big surprise this evening."

I left without looking back at the confused Seraphine.
