Chapter 18 : Junior's Summons

Corrado Soprano Residence, West Orange — March 8, 1999, 3:00 PM

The call had come through Mikey Palmice, which was itself a message.

Not through Enzo, the appropriate channel for inter-family communication. Not through Silvio, who managed tributary relations. Through Mikey Palmice — Junior's personal enforcer, a man whose communication style ranged from menacing to more menacing, with an occasional stop at outright threatening.

"Tomorrow. Three o'clock. Don Soprano wants to see you." The voice on the phone had carried the flat affect of a man who considered conversation a lower form of human interaction. "Alone."

Enzo had counseled caution. "This is not a request between equals. This is a summons from the boss. You go, you listen, you commit to nothing."

Tommy had counseled something more direct: "You want me outside? Outside?"

"No. He said alone. Showing up with muscle insults him."

So Vinnie drove to West Orange himself, the Cadillac navigating suburban streets lined with bare oaks and houses that cost more than the Marchetti family's annual gross. Junior's residence was a brick colonial — smaller than the Aprile house, but maintained with the particular fastidiousness of a man who measured his worth by the crispness of his lawn edges.

He parked. Checked the rearview mirror. Straightened his tie — dark blue, the color Enzo called "respectful." The .38 was in the glovebox, which was where it would stay. You didn't bring a gun to the boss's house. The insult would outlive you.

The saint's medal sat in his pocket. Carmine Teresi's silver, pressed against his thigh. Saint Michael, patron of soldiers. Protect the man walking into the general's tent.

The front door opened before he knocked. Mikey Palmice stood in the doorway — mid-thirties, thin face, eyes that processed visual information the way a scanner processed documents: thoroughly, dispassionately, with particular attention to anything that could be filed under threat.

"Marchetti."

"Mr. Palmice."

Mikey didn't step aside immediately. The half-second delay was performative — a reminder that access to Junior Soprano passed through Mikey Palmice, and the toll was measured in respect.

"Sit in there." He gestured toward the living room. "Don Soprano will be with you."

The living room was furnished with the aggressive formality of a man whose taste had been formed in the 1960s and never updated — dark wood, dark upholstery, a china cabinet displaying plates that would never hold food, and a carpet so thick Vinnie's shoes disappeared to the laces. The television was off. A clock on the mantel ticked with the metronomic patience of furniture that had been counting time since before Vinnie's borrowed body was born.

He sat. And waited.

Five minutes. Ten. Fifteen.

"Power display. Classic. Make the subordinate wait because waiting demonstrates who controls time and therefore who controls the relationship. I waited three hours once for a meeting with a hedge fund manager in Greenwich. That was about money. This is about ego, which is worse because ego never calculates ROI."

Twenty minutes. The clock ticked. Through the window, a dog walked its owner past the house — a golden retriever dragging a middle-aged woman at the particular pace of an animal that had somewhere to be and a leash-holder who didn't.

Twenty-five minutes. His lower back ached from the chair, which was designed for display rather than comfort. His bladder, fueled by the espresso he'd drunk before leaving, was beginning to register its opinion about the waiting period with increasing urgency.

Thirty minutes. Footsteps on the stairs.

Junior Soprano entered the living room the way a man enters a stage — aware of the audience, calibrated to the moment, wearing a cardigan and slacks that projected domestic ease while his eyes projected anything but.

Vinnie stood.

"Don Soprano."

"Vincent. Sit, sit." Junior lowered himself into the chair across from Vinnie with the careful mechanics of a man whose joints had opinions about gravity. "Sorry to keep you. I was on the phone."

"He wasn't on the phone. The phone didn't ring once in thirty minutes. But the lie is the point — it establishes that his time is more valuable than mine, and that any delay is circumstantial rather than strategic."

"No problem."

Junior studied him. The wire-rim glasses caught light from the window, obscuring his eyes for a half-second before the angle resolved and the gaze became visible again — sharp, probing, carrying the particular intensity of a man who believed he was the most important person in any room and was frequently wrong about everything except that.

"Your father, God rest him." Junior crossed himself. The gesture was automatic, mechanical, a reflex so worn by repetition it had lost its spiritual content and become punctuation. "A reliable man. The Marchetti family has always shown proper respect."

"Thank you, Don Soprano."

"I knew your grandfather. Aldo. Numbers, out of a barbershop on Dickinson Street." The repetition from the Aprile party was deliberate — Junior establishing a history that preceded Vinnie's existence, a reminder that the Soprano family's awareness of the Marchetti family was generational.

"Yes, sir."

Junior leaned back. The cardigan shifted. His fingers found the armrest and began a slow drum — index, middle, ring, pinky, a pattern that repeated with the regularity of a man whose habits had calcified into ritual.

"How's business?"

"Good. Up thirty percent since I took over. New contracts, improved routes."

"Thirty percent." Junior's eyebrows rose — the performance of impressed, whether or not the emotion was genuine. "That's not bad. Your father never saw those numbers."

"Different methods. Same foundation."

The drumming stopped. Junior's voice dropped — not to a whisper, but to the register that signaled the transition from pleasantries to purpose.

"You satisfied, Vincent? With the way things are?"

The question was a door. Every possible answer led somewhere — some rooms safe, some rooms not, and no way to see behind the door before stepping through.

"I'm satisfied that the family is stable and earning. And I'm grateful for the DiMeo family's leadership."

"The DiMeo family's leadership." Junior repeated the phrase as if tasting it. "That's diplomatic. Very diplomatic."

"I mean it respectfully."

"I know you do." Junior's fingers resumed their drumming. "But let me ask you this — the arrangement with Tony's crew. The tribute schedule, the territories. You satisfied with those?"

"And there it is. He's not asking if I'm happy with the status quo. He's asking if I'd be open to a different status quo — one where Junior's crew, not Tony's, manages the Marchetti tribute. He's building a network. Brick by brick, soldier by soldier, using the legitimacy of his new title to restructure the informal power arrangements that Tony controls."

"The arrangement works, Don Soprano. But arrangements can always be improved. I'm open to whatever serves the family best."

Junior's expression reconfigured — satisfaction layered over calculation, the face of a man who'd heard what he wanted to hear even though what he'd heard was deliberately ambiguous.

"A man who keeps his options open does well for himself." The same line from the Aprile party, deployed again with the confidence of a man who'd found a phrase that worked and intended to use it until it stopped working. "A man who commits too early to the wrong people..."

"I understand."

"I just want you to know, Vincent." Junior leaned forward. The domesticity of the living room — the china cabinet, the thick carpet, the clock — pressed against the weight of what was being offered. "The Marchetti family has friends. Real friends. And real friends look after each other."

"Friends. In this vocabulary, 'friends' means 'allies who owe me favors and will support me when I need support.' Junior is building his court. He needs tributaries who answer to him directly, not through Tony's infrastructure. The Marchetti family — small, reliable, newly profitable — is exactly the kind of piece he wants on his board."

"I appreciate that, Don Soprano. More than I can say."

"Good." Junior patted the armrest. The audience was ending. "Give my regards to Enzo. And keep doing what you're doing with the business. Thirty percent — that's good work."

"Thank you."

Mikey materialized at the doorway. The escort out was silent — down the hallway, past framed photographs of Junior at various ages (younger, thinner, the same calculating eyes), through the front door, into the March afternoon.

The door closed behind him.

Vinnie walked to the Cadillac. Got in. Closed the door. Sat.

His hands were shaking.

Not fear — though fear was the appropriate response to a conversation where every word had been a potential tripwire. Adrenaline. The neurological aftermath of thirty minutes of sustained performance, every sentence weighed against consequences that ranged from inconvenient to fatal.

He needed a bathroom. He needed five minutes.

The gas station two blocks from Junior's neighborhood had a single restroom — cracked tiles, fluorescent tube flickering with the epileptic persistence of underfunded maintenance. Vinnie locked the door, used the toilet, then stood at the sink for four minutes washing his hands. Not because they were dirty. Because the warm water was grounding, and grounding was what you needed when you'd just sat across from a man planning a murder and smiled at him like he was your grandfather.

"Junior is moving. Not tomorrow, not next week, but the machinery is in motion. He's building alliances, testing loyalties, creating a network that answers to him instead of Tony. And when the network is complete, he'll use it."

"And Livia. The puppet master's puppet master. Somewhere in that house in West Orange, Tony's mother is whispering the words that Junior converts into action. She wants her son dead because he put her in a nursing home, and Junior wants Tony dead because Tony made him a figurehead, and together they're going to try to kill the only man in New Jersey who could protect Vinnie's family from everything else."

The system pulsed. Vinnie was back in the car now, the gas station receding in the rearview mirror, West Orange giving way to the highway.

[POLITICAL EVENT: PRIVATE AUDIENCE WITH ACTING BOSS. +10 SP]

Forty-five. Enough for two simple queries, with five to spare. The murder investigation had been waiting seven weeks for funding. The succession crisis was more urgent — and a ten-SP query about Junior might confirm what Vinnie already knew and give him something to work with.

He pulled into a rest stop on Route 280. Cut the engine. Reached for the query function.

[QUERY: "IS JUNIOR SOPRANO PLANNING ACTION AGAINST TONY SOPRANO?"]

The system processed. The answer arrived in the clipped format that ten-SP questions produced — fragments, not analysis.

[CONFIRMED. ACTIVE CONSPIRACY. EXTERNAL INFLUENCE PRESENT. TIMELINE: WEEKS]

"Confirmed. Not 'possible,' not 'probable' — confirmed. The system doesn't deal in certainty lightly. Whatever Junior and Livia are planning, it's past the idea stage and into execution."

Ten SP left. One more question. He chose carefully.

[QUERY: "WILL THE ACTION AGAINST TONY SOPRANO SUCCEED?"]

[PROBABILITY: LOW. SUBJECT MAINTAINS DEFENSIVE AWARENESS. OUTCOME FAVORS SUBJECT SURVIVAL]

"Low probability of success. Tony survives. Which is what meta-knowledge already told me, but the system's confirmation adds a layer of data that meta-knowledge can't — it's processing current conditions, not television scripts. Tony survives because he's alert, not because the plot demands it."

[SP: 45 → 25]

Twenty-five points. The investigation into Sal's murder would have to wait one more cycle. But the succession intelligence was worth the cost — it confirmed the timeline (weeks, not months), the outcome (Tony survives), and the current status (active conspiracy).

The question now was what to do with it.

[QUEST UPDATE: NAVIGATE DiMEO SUCCESSION — DECISION POINT APPROACHING]

"Option one: warn Tony directly. Problem — how do I know? I can't cite meta-knowledge. I can't say 'a system in my head confirmed it.' I'd have to present it as intelligence gathered through observation, which means I'd need observable evidence."

"Option two: do nothing. Let canon play out. Tony survives, Junior gets arrested, the power structure resolves itself. Problem — doing nothing when I could have helped is the kind of inaction Tony Soprano remembers. And men who do nothing when they could have acted don't get invited to the table when the dust settles."

"Option three: find a way to nudge. Not a warning — a signal. Something that makes Tony look harder at Junior without revealing that I know what Junior is planning. A comment, a question, a piece of information that lands in Tony's awareness and adjusts his vigilance by a few degrees."

"Enzo would say option two. Tommy would say option one. The financial analyst in me says option three — minimum risk, maximum positioning, plausible deniability intact."

The Cadillac's engine caught. Vinnie pulled out of the rest stop and pointed the car toward Jersey City. The March afternoon was fading — five o'clock light, the sun already behind the Newark skyline, the industrial corridor between cities reduced to silhouettes and tail lights.

Elena Moretti's face appeared in his mind, uninvited. The angular features, the thin watch, the smile she'd suppressed and then released. Four days since the charity event. He'd thought about calling — had the number through the business card she'd left with the Youth Foundation, accessible through Conte's wife — and hadn't.

"A prosecutor and a mobster. The oldest bad idea in the Jersey playbook. She knows who I am. She came to that conversation with files and suspicions and the professional obligation to treat every interaction with a waste management executive from a known crime family as potential intelligence."

"And she smiled. And she stayed when she could have walked away."

"And I'm thinking about her while driving home from a meeting with a man who's planning to assassinate his nephew."

"Focus. The succession crisis first. Elena second. The murder investigation third. The financial analyst's hierarchy of priorities, applied to a life that the financial analyst never imagined."

The phone sat in the passenger seat. He should call Enzo, debrief the Junior meeting. But not on a cell phone — not with the FBI monitoring everything connected to the DiMeo family. In person. Tomorrow.

Tomorrow, he'd tell Enzo about Junior's approach. Not the system's confirmation — just the impression. Junior's building something. He's recruiting. And the timeline feels short.

Enzo would understand. Enzo always understood.

The Cadillac found the Pulaski Skyway. Below, the Hackensack River caught the last light of the afternoon. Somewhere behind him in West Orange, Junior Soprano sat in his living room with his wire-rim glasses and his drumming fingers and his plans for a murder that would fail.

And somewhere in the future — weeks, the system said — the failure would reshape everything.

Vinnie merged into traffic and drove toward it.
