Chapter 26 - The First Strike

Nightfall descended over New York, but Ava and Ethan were wide awake, their nerves taut. After Selene's briefing, the reality sank in: Adrian's attack would come soon, and it wouldn't be limited to boardrooms or business deals.

Ava's phone buzzed. Unknown number. She froze, staring at the screen. Hesitation gave way to courage as she swiped to answer.

A deep, familiar voice whispered, "Exposure is freedom… or destruction. Choose wisely."

Before she could respond, the call ended. Her pulse raced. Ethan's hand found hers instinctively, gripping it tight. "He's started," Ethan said, jaw tight. "And it's personal."

Minutes later, a package arrived at Ava's office. Black, unmarked. She opened it carefully. Inside: photographs — Ethan and Ava, caught in private moments, some intimate, some strategic. Confidential meetings, personal conversations, even her private journal left on the desk at home.

Her stomach churned. "He knows everything," she whispered.

Ethan scanned the images. "This is psychological warfare. He wants to shake us, break our focus, make us fight emotionally instead of strategically."

Ava's fingers trembled. But her mind sharpened. Fear was no longer an option. She would not let him control her.

Together, they began mapping out Adrian's network. Selene's intel revealed who he had recruited, what he planned next, and his most vulnerable points. But the darkness of his obsession weighed on them — Adrian was relentless, and he had a terrifying edge: he didn't care about collateral damage, not even his own safety.

Hours passed. Plans were drawn. Countermeasures tested. Every moment brought adrenaline, anxiety, and the faintest hint of thrill. Danger was intoxicating, but so was the power they felt working together — mind and heart aligned.

Finally, Ava looked at Ethan. "We need to be ready," she said. "Not just to fight back… but to strike first if necessary."

He nodded. "Agreed. He wants war. Then we give him one he'll never forget."

The city lights flickered outside, unaware of the storm brewing within Reed Global's walls. And for the first time, Ava smiled — not out of relief, but out of anticipation. Adrian had forced her hand. The first strike had been delivered, but the real game was just beginning.
