Chapter 79 - Chapter 79: The Divine Purchase

The Collective's army gathered beyond the door.

Jarine felt them through the Life-Web—thousands of cybernetic soldiers, war machines the size of buildings, weapons that hummed with lethal energy. They had been watching, waiting, preparing. Now they moved.

"Twenty-four hours," Ren reported, his mortal face pale. "Maybe less."

Jarine stood beneath the Sky-Tree, surrounded by his advisors—Elara, Cogitatus, Borin, the Mer elder, the spider queen's representative. The valley's defenses were as ready as they could be. But against an army of this size, against the Collective's desperation...

"We need more," he said quietly.

"More?" Elara's voice was sharp. "We've mobilized everything. Every ally, every resource, every person. There's no more."

Jarine closed his eyes and opened the System Shop.

The interface bloomed in his vision—familiar after all these centuries, but still wondrous. His Merit Points balance glowed: 847,000 MP. Accumulated across dozens of worlds, thousands of gardens, countless miracles.

He scrolled past the usual categories—seeds, tools, summons—into sections he had never explored. Sections labeled:

[Ultimate Defenses]

[Demi-God Summons]

[Reality Anchors]

[World Shields]

His finger hovered over the first category.

[Citadel-Class Defense Network - Tier 9]

Description: A comprehensive defensive system that transforms any territory into an impregnable fortress. Includes automated energy shields, reality anchors (prevents dimensional breaches), intelligent targeting systems, and self-repairing structures.

Integration: Bonds with existing Life-Web. Learns and adapts to threats.

Requirements: 500,000 MP, 10 World Cores (Acquired), Guardian Attunement (All).

Warning: Installation time: 12 hours. Must be activated before enemy arrival.

Jarine's breath caught. 500,000 MP. More than half his savings. But the description...

He kept scrolling.

[Aegis - Offensive Guardian (Demi-God Class) - Tier 10]

Description: A manufactured guardian of near-divine power. Designed for offensive operations—can engage enemy forces beyond territory boundaries, pursue retreating armies, and eliminate threats at their source.

Attributes: Strength (Godlike), Speed (Teleportation), Intelligence (Tactical), Loyalty (Absolute).

Appearance: Customizable (Default: Humanoid, 15 ft, Energy-Based).

Requirements: 600,000 MP, 15 World Cores, 1 Divine Spark (From Ren?).

Warning: Cannot be purchased without divine assistance. Demi-god class beings require divine essence to anchor.

Jarine's heart pounded. A demi-god. A being of near-divine power, loyal absolutely, designed for offense.

Ren appeared beside him, drawn by some instinct. "What are you looking at?"

"A way to win." Jarine showed him the interface.

Ren's eyes widened. "That's... that's me. The Divine Spark—that's part of my essence. If I give it, I'll be weakened. Permanently."

"How permanently?"

"I'll lose some of my divinity. Maybe never regain it fully." Ren met his eyes. "But I'll still be me. Still your friend. Still Ren."

Jarine shook his head. "I can't ask that."

"You're not asking. I'm offering." Ren placed a hand on his shoulder. "We've been through a hundred worlds together. Faced gods and monsters and worse. This is just one more fight. Let me help."

"Are you sure?"

"I've never been more sure of anything." Ren smiled—a genuine, warm expression. "You taught me what matters. This is what matters."

Jarine nodded slowly. "Then we do it. Together."

He pressed Accept.

The valley changed.

Golden light erupted from the System Shop interface, spreading across the ground, climbing walls, wrapping around every structure. The people watched in wonder as their homes, their gardens, their lives were transformed.

Walls grew—not of stone, but of energy, shimmering and translucent but utterly solid. Towers rose from nothing, their peaks armed with weapons that hummed with power. The very air seemed to thicken, to become defended.

The Citadel activated.

And in the center of it all, beneath the Sky-Tree, a new figure materialized.

Aegis.

It was beautiful—a humanoid form fifteen feet tall, its body composed of pure energy that shifted through colors. Its face was androgynous, calm, focused. Its eyes held the depth of stars and the warmth of sunrise. When it spoke, its voice resonated through every soul in the valley.

"I am Aegis. I am defense. I am offense. I am yours."

It knelt before Jarine.

"Commander. The enemy approaches. Shall I engage?"

Jarine looked at this being—this demi-god, this manufactured miracle, this answer to the Collective's threat.

"Wait," he said. "Let them come. Let them see what they're facing."

Aegis rose. "As you command."

The Collective's army arrived at dawn.

They came through the door in endless waves—cybernetic soldiers, war machines, flying dreadnoughts that blocked the sun. Their leader—the woman from before, now more machine than human—floated at their head, her eyes blazing with cold triumph.

"Founder!" her voice echoed across the valley. "We have returned! Surrender now, and your people will be spared!"

Jarine stood at the valley's edge, Aegis beside him, the Citadel's defenses humming behind them.

"No," he said simply.

The woman's eyes narrowed. "You're a fool. We outnumber you a hundred to one. Our weapons can level this valley in hours."

"Then why haven't you started?"

She hesitated. Something was wrong. She could feel it—the power radiating from the valley, the presence that hadn't been there before.

"What have you done?"

Jarine smiled. "I made a purchase."

He nodded to Aegis.

The demi-god moved.

One moment it stood beside him. The next, it was among the Collective's forces, its energy form passing through armor like light through glass. War machines exploded. Soldiers fell. Dreadnoughts crashed from the sky.

Aegis fought with surgical precision—not destroying indiscriminately, but targeting. Leaders first. Then weapons. Then will.

Within minutes, the Collective's army was in ruins.

The woman stared, her mechanical face frozen in disbelief. "What... what are you?"

"I am defense," Aegis said, appearing before her. "I am offense. I am the reason you should have stayed home."

It raised a hand.

"No," Jarine called. "Let her go."

Aegis paused. "Commander?"

"Let her go. Let her tell the others what happened here. Let the Collective know that Blackwood Vale is not a target—it's a warning."

The woman stared at him, her cold eyes flickering with something that might have been fear.

"You're making a mistake."

"No. I'm making a statement." Jarine met her gaze. "Go. Tell them what you saw. Tell them the Founder bought a demi-god and a Citadel. Tell them we're not afraid."

She fled through the door, her shattered army limping behind her.

The valley erupted in cheers.

People poured from their homes, embracing each other, weeping with joy. The guardians materialized, their ancient forms bright with approval. The Mer sang from their pond. The dwarves raised their axes in salute.

Jarine stood at the center, Aegis beside him, Ren at his other side.

"We did it," Ren whispered. "We actually did it."

"We did it." Jarine embraced his friend—this god who had sacrificed part of himself for this moment. "Thank you. For everything."

Ren hugged him back, tears streaming down his face. "Thank you. For teaching me to care."

Aegis watched them, its energy form pulsing with something that might have been contentment.

"This is what you fight for," it said. "This—love, connection, home. I understand now."

Jarine looked at his valley—his people, his gardens, his life.

"Yes," he said. "This is exactly what we fight for."
