Ava's POV
They got back on the bus and did not look at the diner window.
She took her seat. Leo beside her. The doors closed and the bus pulled out of the rest stop lot and she kept her eyes forward and waited until they were back on the highway and the rest stop was a quarter mile behind them before she allowed herself to check whether the man was still in the booth.
She looked.
The diner window passed in her peripheral vision.
The booth was empty.
"He's gone," she said.
"I know," Leo said. He was already looking at his phone, angled low, away from the aisle. "He made a call when we got back on. Two minutes ago."
"You saw him?"
"Reflection in the window." He put the phone away. "He's reporting in. Which means whoever hired him is going to know we boarded this bus."
"And the destination."
"Yes."
She looked at the seat back in front of her. "How long until they can get someone to the terminus?"
