But something about the finality in that voice made Ambrose turn before his mind could register it, his eyes immediately locking with the person who said it.

Standing just a few meters ahead of him was none other than Gabriel Silverstone. He had his hands folded in front of him, those iridescent orbs narrowing on him.
Accessing. Curious without apology.
He took two slow steps forward, ignoring the crowd and chatter. "You… are a Guide?" The uncertainty in his voice was clear. "Or, at least, I think you are. A low rank one most likely."
As he inched closer, Ambrose's muscles grew more rigid. He kept his chin high, simultaneously avoiding eye contact. Yet it was futile. The man stared at him as if he could see right through his soul.
Once Gabriel was in front of him, his eyes scoured Ambrose from head to toes. He circled him, each click of his boots adding an extra knot of anxiety in Ambrose's chest.
