Cherreads

Chapter 42 - Chapter 42- The Shuketsu Heir

The thunderous cheers for Nagisa Minazuki's victory gradually fade across the Kyobi Battlegrounds.

Foxfire embers drift lazily through the mountain air.

Far below—

Nagisa and Haruto complete their final bows.

Warrior to warrior.

Respect earned.

Respect returned.

The crowd answers with one final roar of applause as both fighters leave through their respective Fighter Access Gates.

---

High above the arena—

Yukito suddenly springs to his feet.

Yukito:

"ALRIGHT!"

"It's almost my turn!"

He points dramatically toward the battleground.

Yukito:

"The age of Yukito begins NOW."

Kaito immediately folds his arms.

Kaito:

"The age of embarrassment maybe."

Miko giggles.

Miko:

"You haven't even fought yet."

Yukito places a hand over his chest.

Yukito:

"You all lack vision."

---

Jack lets out a small laugh.

Even Shiori smiles softly.

Shiori:

"Confidence isn't bad."

Kaito smirks.

Kaito:

"Delusion is."

Yukito gasps dramatically.

Yukito:

"Traitor."

---

The group laughs.

The tension eases.

For a moment—

The festival feels light again.

Warm.

Alive.

---

Then—

Yukito suddenly looks toward the arena.

His expression shifts.

Not serious.

Not nervous.

Focused.

Determined.

Yukito:

"...Still."

"When I step down there..."

He clenches a fist.

Yukito:

"I'm winning."

---

Jack nods.

No teasing.

No joke.

Just trust.

Jack:

"Yeah."

Jack extends his one fist towards Yukito.

"Show them who you are, dude."

---

Yukito bumps fists with him.

A grin full of fire.

---

Kaito grins.

Kaito:

"Try not to trip before the match starts."

Yukito:

"Try not to cry when I win."

---

Miko raises both fists excitedly.

Miko:

"We'll cheer for you!"

---

Yukito flashes a confident grin.

Yukito:

"Good."

"Make it loud."

Then he turns.

Begins walking toward the Fighter Access Path.

---

Kaito:

"I bet Yukito win this battle for sure..."

Miko:

"Yeah. Agree..."

The wind shifts.

And for some reason—

Jack's sensed something.

Not fear.

Not worry.

Something else.

---

His eyes drift beyond the battleground.

Beyond the audience.

Beyond the towering cliffs of Mount Kyobi.

Toward the distant ridges hidden behind mist.

---

Silent.

Watching.

Searching.

---

Shiori notices immediately.

She always does.

Shiori:

"Jack?"

---

Jack blinks.

His gaze remains fixed on the horizon.

Jack:

"...Do you feel that?"

---

Shiori follows his gaze.

The cliffs.

The forest.

The sky.

Nothing unusual.

---

Shiori:

"Feel what?"

---

Jack remains silent for a moment.

Then—

Jack:

"It feels like..."

He searches for the right words.

"...something is watching."

---

The mountain wind brushes through the audience terraces.

Foxfire dances softly.

Nothing moves.

Nothing reveals itself.

---

Shiori slowly scans the distant ridges again.

Then the sky.

Then the ancient forest surrounding the sacred basin.

Nothing.

---

Yet she doesn't dismiss him.

Not for a second.

---

Shiori looks back toward him.

Her voice calm.

Certain.

Shiori:

"If you're sensing something..."

A small pause.

Shiori:

"Then there's probably a reason."

---

Jack glances toward her.

---

Shiori:

"You notice things most people miss."

She smiles softly.

"But whatever it is..."

Her eyes return toward the battleground.

"We'll face it when the time comes."

---

Jack remains silent.

Then nods once.

Slowly.

---

Before either can speak again—

GONNNNNNNNNNNNNNG

The Sacred Battle Bell rings.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Absolute.

Its sound rolls across Mount Kyobi itself.

The entire battleground immediately falls silent.

---

BOOOOOOOOOOM.

BOOOOOOOOOOM.

BOOOOOOOOOOM.

The ceremonial drums answer.

Louder than before.

The mountain seems to shake beneath the rhythm.

---

Thousands of eyes turn toward the ceremonial platform.

Foxfire braziers surge higher.

Blue flames rise toward the sky.

---

Elder Renkai steps forward.

His staff strikes stone.

THUD.

---

Elder Renkai:

"Warriors of Kyobi."

---

The crowd stills.

---

Elder Renkai:

"The Fifth Battle shall now commence."

---

Instant excitement erupts.

Whispers race through the audience terraces.

---

"Fifth battle!"

"Who's next?!"

"I heard one of them is from the Shuketsu Clan!"

"The Shuketsu Clan?!"

"No way—"

---

Kaito immediately straightens.

Miko grips the railing.

Jack narrows his eyes.

Shiori smiles knowingly.

---

And Yukito—

Yukito is already grinning.

---

The massive warrior gates begin opening.

Stone grinding against stone.

Ancient mechanisms awakening beneath the battleground.

---

GRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNDDDD

---

Elder Renkai raises his staff.

Foxfire spirals upward around him.

---

Elder Renkai:

"Representing the legendary Shuketsu Clan..."

A pause.

The crowd begins cheering already.

---

Elder Renkai:

"YUKITO SHUKETSU!"

---

The entire battleground EXPLODES.

---

"YUKITOOOOOO!"

"SHUKETSU CLAN!"

---

Yukito's ears instantly shoot upward.

His grin widens.

---

Kaito:

"That's his cue."

---

Miko:

"GOOD LUCK, YUKITO!"

---

Jack gave a confident nod as Yukito nods in agreement.

---

Yukito:

"Watch closely."

---

Foxfire lights awaken beneath his feet.

The crowd roars louder with every step.

---

Elder Renkai's voice echoes once more.

---

Elder Renkai:

"And representing Otozora Village..."

---

The opposite gate begins opening.

Wind pours through the entrance.

A sharp whistle echoes through the arena.

---

Elder Renkai:

"HIBIKI OTOZORA!"

---

A young male warrior emerges.

Lean.

Fast-looking.

Sky-blue combat robes reinforced with light armor.

A curved shortsword rests at his waist.

Several wind talismans flutter from his belt.

His movements are calm.

Precise.

Like a breeze before a storm.

---

The Otozora spectators erupt.

---

"HIBIKI!"

"SHOW THEM OTOZORA'S SPEED!"

---

Hibiki looks toward the arena.

Then toward Yukito.

---

Yukito grins.

---

Hibiki smirks back.

---

Across the colossal Kyobi Battlegrounds—

Two young warriors approach the center.

One carrying the legacy of the Shuketsu Clan.

The other carrying the pride of Otozora Village.

---

The drums intensify.

The crowd rises.

The mountain watches.

The cheers for Yukito continue echoing across the Kyobi Battlegrounds.

"YUKITO!"

"SHUKETSU CLAN!"

"LET'S GO!"

The crowd's excitement feels different.

Stronger.

More respectful.

Even older kitsune are watching closely.

---

Miko notices immediately.

Her ears twitch.

Miko:

"Everyone seems really excited after hearing the Shuketsu name..."

She looks between Jack, Kaito, and Shiori.

Miko:

"Why?"

"What's so special about the Shuketsu Clan?"

---

Yukito is already walking toward the Fighter Access Path.

Completely unaware.

Or perhaps pretending not to notice.

---

Kaito folds his arms.

Kaito:

"Honestly..."

"I know they're famous."

"But even I don't know everything."

---

Jack glances toward Shiori.

Curious himself.

---

Shiori watches Yukito's retreating figure for a moment.

Then smiles softly.

---

Shiori:

"The Shuketsu Clan isn't famous because of strength."

---

Miko blinks.

---

Shiori:

"They're famous because they changed our entire world."

---

The group falls silent.

---

The distant foxfire braziers flicker.

The ceremonial drums continue their slow rhythm.

---

Shiori:

"Thousands of years ago..."

"Kitsune possessed Veira and Kyura."

"Spirit and life force."

---

Miko nods slowly.

Everyone learns that as children.

---

Shiori:

"But they were unstable."

"Separate."

"Difficult to control."

---

Jack listens carefully.

---

Shiori:

"Then the Shuketsu Clan discovered something revolutionary."

"They found a way to synchronize Veira and Kyura perfectly."

---

Kaito's eyes widen slightly.

---

Shiori:

"The result became known as..."

A small pause.

---

"Kitsugen."

---

Even the mountain wind seems quieter.

---

Miko:

"Kitsugen..."

---

Shiori nods.

---

Shiori:

"The sacred foundation behind modern Kitsune techniques."

"The origin of most energy-based arts used today."

---

Jack's eyes narrow slightly.

Understanding.

---

Shiori:

"Without Kitsugen..."

"There would be no modern Foxfire combat."

"No Foxfire barriers."

"No Foxfire weapons."

"No Foxfire roads."

---

Miko's eyes grow wider with every word.

---

Miko:

"Wait..."

---

She points toward the glowing spirit roads stretching throughout Mount Kyobi.

---

Miko:

"Those too?"

---

Shiori smiles.

---

Shiori:

"Those too."

---

Kaito slowly exhales.

---

Kaito:

"So all of this..."

---

He gestures toward the battleground.

The braziers.

The barriers.

The sacred flames.

---

Kaito:

"Exists because of them?"

---

Shiori nods.

---

Shiori:

"The Shuketsu Clan didn't simply master Foxfire."

---

Her gaze drifts toward the countless blue flames burning throughout the arena.

---

Shiori:

"They gave Foxfire to the Kitsune race."

---

Silence.

---

For a moment—

Everyone looks around.

At the glowing battleground.

The sacred mountain.

The foxfire lanterns.

The spirit roads.

The blazing braziers.

---

Suddenly—

Everything feels different.

---

Miko whispers.

---

Miko:

"They changed the world..."

---

Shiori:

"Yes."

---

Jack watches Yukito walking toward the arena.

Still grinning.

Still acting like himself.

---

Shiori smiles faintly.

---

Shiori:

"And the funny part is..."

---

Kaito already knows what's coming.

---

Kaito:

"He doesn't act like it."

---

Shiori laughs softly.

---

Shiori:

"Yes."

---

Miko giggles.

---

Miko:

"So he's basically the descendant of one of the most important clans in history..."

---

Kaito:

"Yep."

---

Miko:

"And he still gets distracted by sweets and snacks."

---

Kaito:

"Yep."

---

Jack:

"Sounds like Yukito."

---

The group laughs.

---

Far below—

Yukito reaches the entrance to the arena.

The crowd erupts again.

---

And for the first time—

Miko doesn't see him as just her friend.

Or a funny teammate.

---

She sees him as the heir to a legacy that helped shape the entire Kitsune world.

Yet somehow...

He's still just Yukito.

And that is the most impressive thing about him.

---

The crowd continues roaring throughout the Kyobi Battlegrounds.

"YUKITO!"

"SHUKETSU CLAN!"

"SHOW US YOUR FOXFIRE!"

Foxfire braziers burn brightly around the arena.

At the center battleground—

Yukito Shuketsu and Hibiki Otozora stand facing one another beneath Mount Kyobi's sacred gaze.

Waiting.

Calm.

Focused.

---

High above in the audience terraces—

Miko is still processing everything she just learned.

Her eyes move between Yukito and Shiori.

Then suddenly—

Miko:

"Wait."

---

Everyone looks at her.

---

Miko points directly at Shiori.

---

Miko:

"You're a Shuketsu too, Sensei."

---

Shiori blinks.

Then smiles.

---

Shiori:

"I am."

---

Miko's eyes widen even more.

---

Miko:

"So you're both from THAT clan?"

---

Kaito laughs.

---

Kaito:

"When you say it like that, it sounds ridiculous."

---

Jack looks toward Shiori.

Then toward Yukito standing below.

A small smile appears.

---

Jack:

"So..."

---

Shiori raises an eyebrow.

---

Jack:

"You and Yukito are the Great Shuketsu Clan siblings."

---

For a moment—

Shiori simply stares at him.

Then—

She suddenly giggles.

A genuine laugh.

Rare.

Warm.

---

Shiori:

"That's one way to say it."

---

Miko immediately nods.

---

Miko:

"It sounds cool though."

---

Kaito smirks.

---

Kaito:

"Very dramatic."

---

Jack shrugs.

---

Jack:

"I wasn't trying to be dramatic."

---

Kaito:

"That's what makes it dramatic."

---

The group laughs.

---

Shiori looks back toward the arena.

Toward her younger brother.

---

A gentle smile appears on her face.

---

Shiori:

"To me..."

A small pause.

---

"He's still a kid who got lost trying to find the kitchen."

---

Jack smiles at her.

---

Then—

The atmosphere changes.

---

Below—

Both fighters finally step toward the exact center of the battleground.

The cheers gradually quiet.

The mountain wind sweeps through the arena.

Foxfire dances across ancient stone.

---

Hibiki Otozora rests one hand upon the hilt of his short sword.

His expression calm.

Focused.

---

Across from him—

Yukito places one hand upon the hilt of his katana.

His grin disappears.

Not because of fear.

Because now—

He's a warrior.

---

The crowd falls silent.

---

The two fighters stop.

Only a few steps apart.

---

For a brief moment—

Neither speaks.

---

Then—

Hibiki smiles slightly.

---

Hibiki:

"I've wanted this match."

---

Yukito raises an eyebrow.

---

Yukito:

"Really?"

---

Hibiki nods.

---

Hibiki:

"The Shuketsu Clan."

"The clan that gave Foxfire to the world."

---

The wind brushes through his hair.

---

Hibiki:

"I want to see if the stories are true."

---

Yukito smiles.

Confident.

Relaxed.

---

Yukito:

"Guess you'll find out."

---

Hibiki chuckles.

---

Hibiki:

"Guess I will."

---

Then—

Without another word—

Both warriors bow.

Deep.

Respectful.

---

Not merely to each other.

---

To Mount Kyobi.

---

To the Battleground.

---

To the generations who fought before them.

---

The foxfire braziers flare.

The sacred mountain wind rises.

---

Both warriors straighten.

---

Yukito slowly draws his katana.

SHIIIIING.

Blue foxfire flickers softly along the blade.

---

The crowd erupts immediately.

---

"FOXFIRE!"

"SHUKETSU!"

---

Across from him—

Hibiki draws his short sword.

SHING.

Several small metallic chimes attached to the hilt begin ringing softly.

---

Chin.

Chin.

Chin.

---

A strange sound.

Subtle.

Almost harmless.

---

Yet Jack immediately notices it.

---

Jack:

"...Interesting."

---

Kaito looks toward him.

---

Jack's eyes narrow.

---

Jack:

"He's already using sound."

---

Below—

Hibiki rotates his sword once.

The tiny bells ring again.

---

Chin.

Chin.

Chin.

---

Yukito's ears twitch.

Instinctively.

---

Hibiki notices.

---

And smiles.

---

A dangerous smile.

---

High above—

Shiori's expression changes slightly.

---

Shiori:

"A sound fighter..."

---

Miko tilts her head.

---

Miko:

"Is that bad?"

---

Shiori doesn't answer immediately.

---

Her eyes remain fixed on the arena.

---

Shiori:

"Sound fighters are difficult."

---

Jack nods.

---

Jack:

"They attack things you can't always see."

---

The mountain wind grows stronger.

---

At the ceremonial platform—

Elder Renkai steps forward.

His staff rises.

Foxfire spirals upward.

---

The Sacred Battle Bell begins moving.

---

GONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG

---

The sound rolls across Mount Kyobi.

Ancient.

Absolute.

---

BOOOOOOOOM.

BOOOOOOOOM.

BOOOOOOOOM.

The ceremonial drums answer.

Thunder shakes the battleground.

---

Thousands rise to their feet.

---

Yukito tightens his grip.

---

Hibiki lowers his stance.

---

Foxfire flickers.

---

The bells on Hibiki's sword ring softly.

---

Chin.

Chin.

Chin.

---

Elder Renkai raises his staff high above the battleground.

His voice echoes across the entire sacred mountain.

---

Elder Renkai:

"The Fifth Battle of the Kyobi Battlegrounds Festival..."

A pause.

The entire arena holds its breath.

---

"BEGIN!"
