Chapter 11 - Need to Train

Kai arrived at Administrator Veyra's office at exactly 0800.

The door was reinforced steel with biometric locks… standard for S-rank officers. Kai pressed his palm to the scanner, and after a moment, the door hissed open.

Veyra sat behind a desk covered in holographic displays showing real-time data from across the colony. She looked up as Kai entered with a hard-to-read expression.

"Kai Arren. Sit."

Kai sat in the chair across from her desk, trying to keep his breathing steady. The black Shard pulsed once in his chest, reacting to Veyra's presence. She was S-rank… one of the most powerful people in the colony. If she suspected what he really was...

"Your performance in the Glasslands was noted," Veyra said, pulling up a holographic report. "You killed the C-rank alpha cleanly. Drake reported that you didn't freeze under pressure. That's good."

"Thank you," Kai said carefully.

"However." Veyra's eyes locked onto his. "There was an incident. Dimensional destabilization in the combat zone. Approximately fifty yards of the Glasslands shifted from frozen reality to solid matter. This kind of corruption is unusual for a standard C-rank engagement."

Kai's mouth went dry. "I don't understand. I just fought the Echo."

"Yes, you did. And A-rank power output in an already unstable zone can have unpredictable effects." Veyra leaned back. "The Glasslands have always been fragile. High-intensity combat can trigger cascade failures in dimensional integrity. It's happened before, though rarely."

Kai felt a small measure of relief. She was attributing it to normal A-rank combat effects, not to something specific about his Shard.

"I wasn't aware," Kai said. "Should I avoid fighting in unstable zones?"

"That's not practical. Most of the Wilds are unstable to some degree." Veyra dismissed the holographic report. "Just be mindful of your environment. A-ranks cause more collateral damage than lower ranks… it's a side effect of power. Learn to control your output. Don't use excessive force when it's not needed."

"Understood."

Veyra studied him for a long moment. "You're adapting quickly. Most new A-ranks struggle with the transition from support to combat roles. But you seem to handle it naturally."

"I've been in the Wilds for three years," Kai said. "I know how to stay alive."

"Staying alive and thriving are different things." Veyra stood, walking to the window that overlooked the Inner Ring. "The Guild has a major operation scheduled in three days. Operation Reclamation. We're retaking District 12."

Kai knew about District 12. Everyone did. It used to be a residential area on the colony's east side. It was lost ten years ago when a massive Fracture opened and filled the district with Echoes.

Thousands of people died, and the ones who survived had retreated, and the district has been abandoned ever since.

"We're finally going back?" Kai asked.

"The Guild believes the area has stabilized enough for reclamation. If successful, it would expand our territory by thirty percent and provide housing for fifty thousand people."

Veyra turned back to him. "Fifteen squads are being deployed. Squad Talon is assigned to the Eastern sector. Expected threats are D and C-rank, with possible B-rank presence."

B-rank. Kai's chest tightened. That meant the Balance Protocol would probably activate. That meant more years lost.

"You'll receive a full briefing tomorrow," Veyra continued. "This is the largest operation the Guild has conducted in five years. Failure is not an option." She paused. "Are you ready for this?"

Kai met her gaze. "Yes."

"Good. Dismissed."

Kai left the office, his mind racing. Three days. He had three days before the biggest mission of his life, and he was still struggling to understand his own power.

He needed to train… needed to figure out how to fight without draining the world around him.

That afternoon, Kai took the transit rail to the Edge: the buffer zone between the Inner Ring and the Wilds. It was mostly abandoned warehouses and training facilities, places where Hunters could practice without risking civilian casualties.

Kai found an empty lot surrounded by crumbling concrete walls. Perfect.

He stood in the center of the space, took a deep breath, and pulled up his Status.

[RECKONER SYSTEM - SSS CLASS]

[Balance Points (BP): 1,789]

[Current Debts: 9 years lifespan]

[Remaining Lifespan: 38 years]

Nine years. He'd lost nine years just by fighting normally. If he kept this up, every mission would cost him more time.

"There has to be a way to control it," Kai muttered.

He activated his earth manipulation, the most basic technique he knew. Stone rose from the ground, forming a crude pillar. It was so easy now… being A-rank power made everything easier.

But as the stone rose, Kai felt something else.

He felt a pull, like the System was drawing energy from somewhere to fuel the technique. Not from his body, but from the things around him: the air, the ground, the ambient dimensional energy that saturated the Wilds.

"You're always feeding," Kai said to the Shard. "Even when I'm not fighting. Even when the Balance Protocol isn't active."

He let the pillar collapse and tried again, this time focusing on minimizing the energy draw. He shaped the earth slowly, accurately, using only what he needed.

The pull lessened. It wasn't gone, only reduced.

"Efficiency," Kai realized. "If I'm precise, if I don't waste energy, the System draws less from the environment."

He spent the next two hours practicing. Creating structures, collapsing them, reshaping them. Learning to feel the energy flow, learning to minimize waste.

His earth manipulation had always been about control… moving existing materials rather than creating new ones. Now he just had to apply that same principle to his overall power usage.

By the time the sun started setting, Kai was exhausted but more confident. He couldn't stop the System from feeding entirely, but he could reduce it. Could fight smarter instead of harder.

It wasn't a solution. But it was a start.

The next morning, all fifteen squads assembled in the Guild's main briefing hall.

The room was massive, designed to hold hundreds of people. Holographic displays covered the walls, showing maps of District 12, Echo distribution patterns, and tactical objectives. Kai sat with Squad Talon in the third row, surrounded by other B and A-rank Hunters.

The energy in the room was tense. This wasn't a routine salvage mission. This was war.

Administrator Veyra stood at the front alongside three other S-rank officers. She activated the central hologram, and a three-dimensional map of District 12 appeared, rotating slowly.

"Operation Reclamation begins at dawn, three days from now," Veyra announced, her voice carrying through the hall. "Our objective is to clear District 12 of all Echo presence, establish a forward outpost, and secure the perimeter for civilian resettlement."

The map zoomed in, highlighting different sectors in color.

"Fifteen squads, divided into five strike teams. Each team will clear their assigned sector, working inward toward the central plaza. Expected resistance includes D and C-rank Echoes… primarily Stalkers, Razorbacks, and Shriekers."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Those were common Wilds threats, dangerous but manageable for experienced Hunters.

"However," Veyra continued, and the room fell silent. "Intelligence indicates possible B-rank presence in the Eastern and Northern sectors. Scout reports suggest a Phantom Colossus may have nested in the old industrial complex."

Kai's blood ran cold.

Phantom Colossus.

He'd heard of them… they were massive, reality-warping Echoes that could level buildings with a thought. B-rank at minimum, sometimes pushing into A-rank territory.

"Squad Talon," Veyra said, and Kai felt every eye in the room shift toward their section. "You're assigned to the Eastern sector. Primary objective: clear the residential blocks. Secondary objective: investigate the industrial complex for B-rank signature confirmation."

Drake stood up. "And if we confirm B-rank presence?"

"Call for reinforcement. Do not engage unless absolutely necessary." Veyra's expression was grim. "If a Phantom Colossus is present, we'll need coordinated A-rank response. Possibly S-rank."

She dismissed the hologram and turned to face the assembled Hunters.

"This operation will reshape our colony's future. Success means expansion, security, hope. Failure means hundreds of deaths and decades of setback." Her voice hardened. "We do not fail. Prepare your squads. Dismissed."

The hall erupted into motion as teams filed out, heading to their preparation areas.

Squad Talon gathered in a side room, and Drake immediately pulled up a tactical map on his personal display.

"Eastern sector, residential blocks," Drake said, tracing routes with his finger. "Lots of tight spaces, buildings in various states of collapse. Perfect ambush territory for Stalkers and Shriekers."

"And if we run into the Colossus?" Jace asked nervously.

"We don't," Drake said flatly. "We confirm its location, report it, and let the big guns handle it." His eyes flicked to Kai. "That means you, rookie. If we see a B-rank, you do not engage. Understood?"

Kai nodded, but inside his mind was racing.

B-rank won't activate Balance Protocol, but if they encounter an Echo higher than that, then it would definitely activate.

It would be like fighting the Phantom Lord all over again… brutal, exhausting, and it would cost him years of his life.

But if the squad was in danger, if people were dying...

Could he really hold back?

"We have three days to prepare," Drake continued. "Sera, Brick, run combat drills. Jace, check all barrier equipment. Kai..." Drake paused. "Keep training. Work on precision. We need controlled power, not overwhelming force. Can you do that?"

"Yes," Kai said.

Drake studied him for a moment, then nodded. "Good. We move out at 0600, three days from now. Get ready."

The squad dispersed, and Kai stood alone in the preparation room, staring at the holographic map of District 12.

Three days.

Three days to prepare for the biggest operation in Guild history.

Three days before he'd have to decide how much of his life he was willing to sacrifice to keep his squad alive.

Kai pressed his hand to his chest, feeling the black Shard pulse beneath his skin. "Just three more days," he whispered. "Then we'll see what you really are."
