The shadows didn't wait long.
Three days after the first attack, they returned. Stronger. Darker. Hungrier.
This time, they didn't target the whole school at once. They targeted individuals. Picking them off one by one. Isolating them. Trapping them in their worst nightmares.
Jay woke to screaming.
Not distant screaming. Close. In her room. Mila was thrashing in her bed, crying out, trapped in a nightmare she couldn't escape.
"Mila! MILA!"
Jay shook her. Nothing. Mila's eyes were open but blank. Seeing something else.
"KEIFER!" Jay screamed. "HELP!"
The next hours were chaos.
Students everywhere, trapped in fear dreams. Teachers running, trying to help. Principal Morticia barking orders.
Keifer found Jay in the hallway. Pale. Terrified.
"Mila's trapped. I can't wake her."
"I know. Lyra too. Adrian. Bella. Daniel." His jaw tightened. "The shadows are targeting everyone. Not just us."
"What do we do?"
"We fight."
"How? We can't even wake them up."
He grabbed her hands. "We go inside. Into the dreams. Pull them out."
"That's dangerous."
"I know."
"If we get trapped—"
"We won't." He kissed her forehead. "We're stronger together."
The Nightthorns arrived first.
Freya was gone—expelled—but a new leader had emerged. A tall girl named Raven. Sharp eyes. Quiet voice. Dangerous calm.
"We want to help," she said.
Keifer stared at her. "Why?"
"Because the shadows don't care about factions. They'll kill us all. Crimson. Nightthorn. Everyone." She looked at Jay. "We're not friends. But we're not enemies. Not today."
Jay nodded. "Today, we fight together."
The plan was simple. Dangerous. Probably stupid.
Teams of two. One to go into the dream. One to anchor them. Pull them back if things went wrong.
Jay and Keifer teamed together. They'd go into the deepest dreams. The most dangerous ones. The ones where their friends were trapped.
"You don't have to do this," Keifer said.
"Yes I do. They're my friends."
"They're our friends."
She squeezed his hand. "Then let's go get them."
Mila's dream was the worst.
A hospital room. Her mother dying. Again and again. Mila was a healer, but she couldn't heal this. Couldn't save her. Couldn't do anything.
"Mila." Jay approached slowly. "It's not real."
"She's dying. I can't—"
"Look at me. It's a dream. The shadows made it. But you're stronger than them."
"I'm not."
"You ARE. You're the strongest person I know. You keep us all alive. You keep us all sane. Without you, we'd fall apart."
Mila looked at her. Tears streaming.
"Jay..."
"Come back. Please. We need you."
Mila took her hand. The dream shattered.
Lyra's dream was chaos.
Literally. Her friends leaving one by one. Abandoning her. She was screaming, running, trying to catch them.
"Lyra!" Adrian was there. Her anchor. "I'm not leaving."
"You will. Everyone does."
"Not me. Never me."
She stopped running. Looked at him. "Promise?"
"Promise."
The dream broke.
Bella's dream was silence.
No art. No color. No sound. Just blank white nothing. She was sitting in the corner, staring at nothing.
"Bella." Mila reached her. "Come back."
"There's nothing here."
"Then bring something. You're an artist. You create something from nothing."
Bella blinked. Pulled out her sketchbook. Started drawing.
Color returned. Sound returned. Life returned.
Adrian's dream was data.
Numbers everywhere. Wrong numbers. Numbers that didn't make sense. He was panicking, trying to fix them.
"Adrian." Lyra grabbed his shoulders. "Stop."
"The data is wrong—"
"The data doesn't matter. YOU matter. Come back."
He looked at her. "You came for me?"
"Of course I came for you. You're my friend."
The numbers faded.
Daniel's dream was a battlefield.
Alone. Fighting shadows. Losing.
"Daniel." Bella appeared beside him. "You're not alone."
"I've always been alone."
"Not anymore." She took his hand. "You have us. Whether you like it or not."
He almost smiled. "I don't like it."
"I know." She pulled him forward. "Come on."
The battlefield disappeared.
Raven and her Nightthorns handled their own.
Not friends. Not allies. But together. Because the shadows didn't care about old grudges.
When it was over, everyone gathered in the common room. Exhausted. Shaken. But alive.
Lyra looked at Raven. "Thank you."
Raven nodded. "Don't get used to it."
"Wouldn't dream of it."
They almost smiled.
Jay collapsed against Keifer.
"We did it."
"We did."
"Everyone's safe."
"For now."
She looked at him. "What does that mean?"
He pulled her close. "It means the shadows aren't done. They were testing us. Finding weaknesses."
"And?"
"And they found them."
That night, a ghost appeared.
Not a student ghost. An old ghost. Dressed in robes from centuries ago.
"You must listen," it said. "Something is coming. Something that will change Black Hollow forever."
"What?" Keifer demanded.
"I cannot say. Only warn. Prepare. Unite. Or fall."
The ghost faded.
Jay and Keifer looked at each other.
"What now?" she whispered.
He took her hand. "Now we prepare."
The next morning, Lyra's whiteboard was different.
THE BATTLE OF FEARS
Nightthorns Helped: YES
Fears Faced: ALL OF THEM
Friends Saved: EVERYONE
Shadows Defeated: TODAY
BUT THE WAR IS NOT OVER.
JAYFER STATUS: ETERNAL
Bond Strength: UNBREAKABLE
NEXT: THE WARNING
Jay read it. Nodded.
Keifer appeared beside her. Coffee in hand.
"Ready for whatever comes next?"
"Ready for you."
They walked away together.
The shadows would return. But so would they.
Always together.
