Earth, United States — New Mexico
After Raven, Storm, and Handsome Guy left with Mjolnir, Thor fell into despair and drank himself unconscious.
The next day, Coulson, Tony, and Thor gathered together.
After an entire night of in-depth conversations, Coulson finally learned the backgrounds of the Warriors Three and Lady Sif, then reported everything to Nick Fury.
Fury immediately made the decision: Coulson was to do everything possible to recruit them into the Avengers Initiative.
The Avengers Initiative had officially begun, but at the moment, only Hawkeye, Black Widow, Iron Man, and the still-recovering Captain America could truly be considered first-rate combatants.
Within Earth itself were mutants, Titans from Skull Island, the Sorcerers' Association, the Dark Council, and many other organizations operating outside ordinary human law. Beyond that, there was also the constant threat of alien invasion.
As a result, Nick Fury desperately needed powerful allies.
Following Fury's orders, Coulson activated his legendary persuasion skills and formally invited Thor, the Warriors Three, and Lady Sif to join the Avengers.
"Sorry. Not interested."
Thor had a favorable impression of Coulson, but the moment he heard about joining the Avengers, he lost all interest.
Even stripped of his divine power and reduced to an ordinary mortal, he still possessed the pride of an Asgardian prince.
The Prince of Asgard joining a human organization and working for humans?
What would happen to the God of Thunder's dignity?
As for the Warriors Three and Lady Sif, they had only recently arrived on Earth and knew little about it.
Although Raven and Handsome Guy had already beaten some arrogance out of them, that didn't mean they respected everyone.
Asgardian warriors respected only the strong.
If Tony wore his Iron Man armor, they would acknowledge him to some degree.
But someone like Coulson—a mere "weakling"—thinking he could recruit them?
Dream on.
"Don't reject the idea so quickly," Coulson said calmly. "Don't you want to reclaim Mjolnir, restore your divine power, return to Asgard, and stop Loki?"
Having already figured out Thor's straightforward personality, Coulson targeted exactly what Thor cared about most.
It worked.
"You can help me get Mjolnir back?"
A flicker of hope appeared in Thor's eyes.
"No."
Coulson shook his head.
Mjolnir was currently in Handsome Guy's possession, and behind him stood the powerful mutant forces of Skull Island. Even S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn't afford to provoke them.
Thor's expression darkened.
For a moment, he felt like he'd just been toyed with.
Seeing Thor's blood pressure rising, Coulson quickly continued.
"But helping you return to Asgard... that may still be possible."
Volstagg took a huge bite of his hamburger and growled,
"If you have a way, then spit it out."
"Loki is a madman. If he rules Asgard, Earth will be in danger as well."
Sif spoke with open disdain.
She had never liked Loki.
"What about... the Tesseract?"
Coulson asked cautiously.
Tony immediately recalled the Norse legends his late father Howard Stark had once told him.
According to the legends, the Tesseract possessed the power of space itself. It could open portals across dimensions and transport vast quantities of weapons and supplies anywhere in the universe.
"The Tesseract!"
The Warriors Three and Lady Sif were visibly shocked.
At the dawn of the universe, the Cosmic Creator transformed six infinitely powerful singularities into the Six Infinity Stones.
The Tesseract had been created as the container for the Space Stone.
Of course, very few people actually knew that the Space Stone existed inside the cube. Most civilizations merely used the cube's tremendous energy without understanding its true nature.
Throughout countless ages, the Tesseract had passed through many civilizations before Odin seized it and made it one of Asgard's greatest treasures.
Thousands of years earlier, during the war against the Frost Giants, Odin accidentally left the Tesseract on Earth.
If they truly recovered it, returning directly to Asgard would be easy.
Seeing their reaction, Coulson smiled.
"Exactly."
"The Tesseract is currently in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s possession."
"As long as you join the Avengers and earn distinguished service, Director Fury can grant special permission for you to use it."
"What?!"
The hot-tempered Volstagg exploded in anger.
He slammed the table so hard it shattered into pieces as he stood up.
"The Tesseract is Asgard's property!"
"You despicable thieves actually intend to use it to manipulate us?"
Fandral, Hogun, and Lady Sif also began glaring coldly at Coulson.
To every Asgardian, the Tesseract was their nation's lost treasure.
Now a group of mortals had found it, refused to return it, and were even trying to use it as leverage.
It was simply unforgivable.
Seeing the atmosphere turning hostile, Coulson hurriedly raised both hands.
"Wait."
"Let me make something clear."
"Yes, the Tesseract originally belonged to Asgard."
"But Asgard obtained it through... questionable means as well."
"And losing it was Asgard's mistake."
"During World War II, the Red Skull of Hydra discovered the Tesseract and used its power to create devastating weapons."
"Countless Allied soldiers died because of those weapons."
"If we're being honest, humanity paid for Asgard's mistake with our own lives."
The group fell silent.
Seeing that they were beginning to hesitate, Coulson pressed the advantage.
"After an incredibly costly battle, Captain America defeated the Red Skull."
"However, both of them disappeared into the Arctic Ocean along with the aircraft."
"It wasn't until 1945 that Tony's father, Howard Stark, recovered the Tesseract from the seabed and entrusted it to S.H.I.E.L.D. for safekeeping."
"Today, the Tesseract is our legitimate wartime trophy."
"We have every right to decide how it's used."
"If you need its power, then naturally you'll have to offer something in return."
He paused before delivering the final blow.
"Or are Asgardians the type who expect everything for free?"
"Is that your so-called honor?"
Thor and the others were left speechless.
After thinking it over, Coulson's reasoning... actually seemed to make sense.
And yet...
Something about it still felt strangely off.
After a lengthy round of persuasion, Thor and his companions finally agreed to join the Avengers.
In return, S.H.I.E.L.D. would help Thor recover Mjolnir and would also "lend" them the Tesseract so they could return to Asgard.
When Nick Fury received Coulson's report, a rare smile appeared on his face.
For years, S.H.I.E.L.D. had been trying to harness the Tesseract's energy to develop next-generation superweapons, but technological limitations had prevented any real breakthroughs.
If Asgardian technology could be obtained, those obstacles might finally be overcome.
Unfortunately for Fury...
The "Tesseract" he had placed so much hope in was actually a fake.
The real Tesseract had already fallen into Lex Luthor's hands back in 1996.
The cube stored inside S.H.I.E.L.D. was nothing more than a convincing imitation.
The genuine Tesseract now rested inside the Mars Base.
Under the genius of Lex Luthor, its energy had already begun mass-producing advanced, high-end weaponry.
After parting ways with Coulson and the others, Tony returned to New York.
The first person he went to see was not Pepper Potts...
...but General Ross, who had recently been discharged from the hospital and was drowning his frustrations in alcohol.
