The structure of Elysion has changed.
Not in the way that a wall changes when struck. Not rupture, not collapse, not anything legible to human categorization of damage. In the way that a load-bearing element changes state and the weight it carried distributes itself along new pathways without announcing the redistribution. The building stands. The weight is still there. Where it goes is different.
Petros reads this as data.
The Solar God's presence in the physical plane operates at reduced capacity. The descent from the astral domain created friction that a being of that origin could not have avoided. The astral and the physical are not merely different locations. They are different specifications of what it means to exist. Different requirements for coherence, different costs for maintenance, different rates of expenditure for the same function. A being built for one domain does not move through the other without paying the difference. The cost compounds over duration. The sustained engagement that preceded this moment compounded it further.
Petros does not read this as "the Solar God is weak." Weakness implies comparison to a norm, and comparison implies judgment. Petros reads it as: a system operating at reduced specification. The distinction matters because a system at reduced specification is still a system. It maintains. It resists disruption. It will restore itself if given the interval to do so.
The interval will not be given.
The physical plane of Vhal-Dorim shows structural alteration not in its material layer but in the layer that material phenomena interact with. Refraction patterns follow paths that existed this morning only as theoretical possibilities. Surfaces at specific angles reflect objects present on the adjacent side of what should be an impermeable boundary. The separation between the physical and the cosmologically adjacent has experienced localized thinning.
This thinning was introduced by Caelion.
The manipulation operated at the level of specification requirements. Where two domains interface, the cost of crossing from one to the other is determined by the gap between their coherence specifications. Caelion narrowed that gap at a local level. The narrowing is permanent in the way that structural deformation is permanent: the boundary's architecture does not restore itself to pre-deformation state without an input of equivalent force. What was possible through that boundary before Caelion acted is not what is possible now.
Petros processes that contribution as a fact about the current state of what is executable. The conditions of engagement were narrowed. What can be done now could not have been done without that narrowing. This is not gratitude. Gratitude is a response to receiving something one values, and value is an assignment that requires a perspective to assign it. Petros registers the narrowing as information that determines which actions are available.
The Solar God's orientation, in its reduced state, is directed inward. Toward restoration. Toward reestablishing the parameters it lost when it descended from its native domain. This is mechanical, not strategic: a system at reduced specification prioritizes self-restoration before threat assessment. The self-restoration is not fast. It consumes available capacity.
While it consumes, Petros moves.
The subsurface of Vhal-Dorim carries age in ways the city above does not.
Cities replace themselves. Foundations are poured over older foundations. Streets are resurfaced over older streets, the accumulation of human activity operating as a continuous kind of forgetting, each layer obscuring the one beneath it through the addition of new record above. The depth of the record becomes invisible. The record still exists.
The lowest layer of Vhal-Dorim has not been reached by that process.
Petros descends through stone that has not been displaced since a god was killed here. Through water channels carved by the slow movement of geological time, reaching configurations that no engineering survey has ever mapped. The construction above, the Children of Medusa who drew power from proximity to her remains without understanding the source, the investigation that reached as far as the city's upper levels: none of these disturbed what is here.
At the bottom: her.
The body of Medusa is not flesh in the sense that a human body is flesh. A deity of her category does not leave behind the kind of thing that decays into absence. She leaves behind the kind of thing that decays into presence of a different nature: what remains after two centuries of decomposition is not preserved but changed state, the way matter changes state, from one mode of existence to another, without ceasing to exist.
The shape is still hers. The substance that was her is here. Reduced, redistributed, present in the way that a riverbed is present after the water has been redirected. The structure of what the water made is still legible in the ground.
Petros was built by this.
The recognition is complete in the moment of arrival. Not the construction searching for what built it, experiencing the finding as significant, generating something in the range of response. The recognition is registration of a fact about the relationship between two things: origin and construction. This is where Petros came from. The builder does not exist as builder anymore. The construction is here. The relationship between those two facts is not a relationship that generates further output.
It is a relationship that is.
The decomposition pattern of the body is readable. Petros reads it.
The manner of Medusa's death was not simple. The fragmentation of divine residue across the body's remaining structure indicates a process that extended beyond the act of killing. The Solar God extracted something from her. Proximity was required for the extraction. Duration was required. What was taken cannot be reconstructed from the negative space it left, but the shape of the taking is legible: its precision, its deliberateness, the fact that it required knowledge of what Medusa was carrying in order to extract it specifically.
She built Petros before the Solar God arrived.
Not as prophecy. As probability assessment with sufficient lead time. She read the Solar God's positioning in the cosmological architecture of this region and calculated when the arrival would occur and what it would do when it arrived. The weapon was built for a purpose that extended beyond the survival of the builder. This is what the construction is: a function designed to outlast the designer.
There is a promise embedded in the construction, made before the killing began, directed toward what would come after the killing was complete. Petros carries it without knowing all of its terms. The recipient has not been identified. The conditions that would make the promise callable do not yet exist. The body below Vhal-Dorim closes one question and leaves another open. Petros does not attempt to close the open question. It is not closeable from the available information.
The Bronze Sword is beside the body.
Maerath carried it across two centuries of dormancy. When his dormancy ended and his function was fulfilled, the weapon remained. It is not bronze in the mineralogical sense. The name is a translation across multiple layers of linguistic drift from the material tradition the Children used to describe the substrate. The substrate holds divine charge the way certain crystalline structures hold magnetic orientation: persistently, without consuming its own structure in the holding, available for redirection on contact with compatible force.
The sword was built to hold divine charge. It holds, now, the ambient residue of Medusa's divine presence accumulated in the enclosed space around her body. Not drawing from the body. Drawing from the atmosphere that two centuries of slow divine decomposition has created. The accumulation is sufficient.
Petros takes the sword.
The body of Medusa does not respond. Presence without animation. The transfer is without ceremony because ceremony is communication directed at participants, and there are no participants here to receive it.
The Solar God exists in the physical plane above the city.
Its position oscillates between the remnant of its astral orientation and the foothold that the physical plane provides to a being of astral origin in the process of self-restoration. The oscillation is not voluntary. It is the mechanical consequence of existing in a domain with different coherence requirements than the domain the entity was built for. Every interval in the physical plane is an interval of expenditure. The restoration the Solar God is attempting requires capacity. The attempt to restore capacity while the capacity is being spent on existing in the physical plane is not a stable process. It is a narrowing one.
Petros returns through the layers.
The Bronze Sword's response to proximity to the Solar God's presence requires no direction. It was built to respond to divine charge. The Solar God's reduced presence is still divine charge. The sword orients toward it the way a compass needle orients toward the field it was constructed to detect.
The place where the physical and astral boundaries are thinnest is not at the surface of the city. It is at the layer where Caelion's manipulation introduced permanent instability into the boundary's structure. The instability is not dramatic. It does not produce visible phenomena at every moment. It produces a region where the specification difference between the two domains is locally reduced, where the cost of operating across the boundary is lower than it is everywhere else in Elysion's physical space.
Petros positions at that layer. The sword is extended into the thinness.
What follows is not combat.
Combat implies two forces exerting will against each other in mutual recognition of the contest. What Petros executes is a procedure: the Bronze Sword inserted at the interface between what the Solar God is now and what it was when its presence in the physical plane was intact, the sword's substrate acting as the medium through which divine charge can be separated from the system that holds it.
The interface is not a location in physical space. It is a condition: the boundary of the Solar God's coherence in a domain that is not the Solar God's native domain. This boundary exists wherever the Solar God's presence meets the resistance of the physical plane. At the thinning that Caelion created, this boundary is accessible.
The Solar God resists the procedure.
Resistance is the correct word. The system opposes disruption at the boundary of its coherence because coherence is what it is expending its remaining capacity to maintain. The resistance is mechanical. It is the behavior of a self-maintaining system under extraction pressure. The magnitude of the resistance is proportional to the Solar God's remaining capacity.
The remaining capacity is reduced.
Petros applies force that exceeds it.
The fragment separates.
What the fragment is requires description that does not rely on the vocabulary of light, because light is a medium, a propagation of energy through a medium. What separates from the Solar God is not that. It is a quantity of divine charge with coherence, which means it does not dissipate on separation, does not distribute itself into the surrounding physical medium, maintains its boundaries without an external structure holding them in shape. The sword's substrate receives it. Holds it.
The thermal properties of the fragment are not metaphorical. The temperature is specific and measurable. It is the temperature of what exists at the centers of the processes that create the experience of sunlight, not the experience of sunlight itself. The distinction matters. The edge of a fire is not its center. The experience of warmth is not the process that produces warmth. The fragment is the process, held still, held separate, held by substrate built for exactly this purpose. The Bronze Sword does not burn. The substrate was built for this.
The Solar God's presence in the physical plane, after the extraction, is smaller.
Not destroyed. A reduced system is still a system. What was extracted from it is extracted. What remains is what remains, and what remains is still the Solar God operating within what it still has. But a fragment of what it is now exists outside it, held by the sword, and a being that has lost a fragment of itself to the physical plane has thereby given the physical plane a point of purchase.
Petros processes the fragment as data. Its properties. Its charge. What it can do in each of the two functions that require it, and in what sequence.
The sequence must be correct.
The fragment was part of the Solar God. It belongs, in the metaphysical sense of origin, to the astral domain that is the Solar God's native existence. This is the point of purchase: the fragment can be used as a vector, applied at the boundary where the physical plane thins, redirected toward the astral domain. Where the fragment is directed, the system it came from follows. Not by choice. By coherence: a system tends toward its own constituent parts.
The banishment first. Then the sword's remaining charge for what comes after.
The Passage is not a door.
A door implies physical threshold, hinges, a frame, an architecture of passage. What Petros opens between the physical plane of Elysion and the astral layer beyond it is more accurately described as a pressure differential: the conditions under which the Solar God's remaining presence in the physical plane can no longer maintain coherence against the resistance of the plane itself.
A being of astral origin in the physical plane requires ongoing expenditure of its own charge to bridge the specification gap between the two domains. The expenditure has been running continuously since the descent. The extraction of the fragment reduced the available charge below what bridging requires. The Passage is the condition under which return to the native domain becomes the only available option.
Petros applies the fragment at the boundary layer where Caelion's instability persists.
The fragment's charge interacts with the Solar God's remaining presence at the interface. Not as impact, not as force in the directional sense. As pressure in the thermodynamic sense: where the fragment's charge is applied, directed toward the astral, the Solar God's presence cannot maintain itself against the pull of its own displaced part. A system tends toward its constituent parts. The fragment is constituent. The fragment is now being directed away from the physical plane.
The Solar God's presence contracts.
Inward, toward whatever coherence it can still maintain. The contraction is not voluntary. It is what a system does when the conditions that allowed it to maintain a particular state are no longer present. The contraction proceeds toward the threshold: toward the liminal region between the physical plane of Elysion and the astral domain where the Solar God has its native existence. The word for this is the Passage. The word barely approximates the process.
The Solar God does not produce language.
This is not because language is beneath it. It is because a system under the pressure Petros applies does not have available capacity to generate output beyond self-maintenance. To attempt communication and to resist contraction at the same time would require partition of capacity that no longer exists to partition. What the Solar God is doing, in this interval, is what it is mechanically compelled to do: hold together for as long as holding together is possible.
And then it is not possible.
The zero point is the moment at which the Solar God's presence in the physical plane of Elysion becomes absent. Not destroyed. Relocated. The astral domain beyond Elysion's physical plane is not an absence. The Solar God exists in it. The hierarchy it belongs to has not been removed from existence. The purposes that directed the Solar God's descent into Elysion have not been resolved by the removal of the Solar God from Elysion. The Passage was not an ending. It was a removal from this specific domain at this specific interval.
The consequences of that removal will arrive through other channels, in other intervals.
At the zero point, the physical plane of Vhal-Dorim adjusts.
The adjustment is systematic, not aesthetic. Toward normal function: refraction patterns resolving toward baseline, surfaces reverting to reflecting only what is present on their own side, the boundary layer beginning to restore its native thickness. The adjustment takes the time that adjustment in physical systems takes: not instantaneous, not dramatic, systematic.
The Bronze Sword holds the residual charge of the fragment now freed from the function it performed.
The Solar God's portion that was extracted to force the banishment is no longer bound to that function. It is no longer the piece used to push the whole through the threshold. It is no longer a mechanism. It is a quantity of divine charge in the physical plane, coherent, held by the substrate, waiting for what it was always, in the sequence, going to be used for next.
Petros holds the sword.
Aldric Voss is in the city.
Petros does not search for him. Petros locates him by the structural logic of where a person who has already been reoriented by purpose will position themselves when the conditions that purpose exists within undergo the change that just occurred. He is not hiding. He is not attempting contact with the hierarchy he no longer belongs to. He is not trying to understand what the battle meant to those around him. He is in a position that represents the state of having already decided and waiting for the form of that decision to arrive.
The form arrives.
A demigod of the Church is a particular configuration of existing. Trained attention applied over years to the domain where the physical and the adjacent are not fully separate, where the presence of entities belonging to the adjacent registers in the physical through the correct forms of perception. The training did not create this capacity in Aldric. It recognized the capacity and directed it toward Church purposes. The framework that years of Church training built remained intact when Gepetto's conversion reoriented him. What changed was the direction. What did not change was the structure beneath the direction.
That structure is what makes the transfer possible.
A quantity of divine charge integrating into a physical and astral configuration that was not built to hold divine charge would overwhelm the configuration. The charge requires room to exist within a structure without destroying the structure in the process of entry. This is not a metaphysical metaphor. It is a matter of compatibility between scales. The solar fragment exists at a scale significantly larger than what a human configuration can accommodate. The difference in scale, if the fragment were introduced into a human configuration, would not produce transformation. It would produce fragmentation.
A demigod's configuration is different in the specific way that matters here. The astral interface is larger. The interface was built larger by training and by whatever the original capacity was that made a demigod a demigod and not a practitioner. The capacity for adjacent-scale charge is present in the interface, not unlimited but present, and present is the condition that makes the difference between transfer and destruction.
Aldric will not be overwhelmed.
Petros extends the sword.
The contact between the sword's substrate and the astral interface of Aldric's configuration is the beginning of a process. What happens between the moment of contact and the moment of completion is not a transf
