Chapter 4 - Overwatch Agent

It's been about three days since (Y/n) became an Overwatch Agent, during which Gerard and Jack were hard at work making sure his documents were created to make it seem like he always existed, of course it wasn't perfect. He was officially made a citizen of the United States of America thanks to friends in high places that Overwatch had. Now while in truth he was born in 2525, but now according to the documentation given to him, he was born in 2026. The official story was that he served in the US Military within their Special Forces during the Omnic Crisis. He specialized in multiple mission types, marksmanship, stealth and recon. He could act as a Sniper when the time called for it. Unfortunately, he couldn't keep his rank as Lieutenant, which he isn't too surprised about. Overwatch recruited him and it's not like he was sent to a different unit within the UNSC. But he was made a Sergeant. Besides the documents, nothing interesting has happened yet. He was given his weapons back, so he was happy to an extent. He did hear that a mission was considered for him, but he isn't sure what it is. Maybe a mission focused on dealing with remnants of hostile Omnics left over from the Omnic Crisis. Whatever it could be, he's mentally preparing for it like he mentally prepares for all missions.

Cody was in the base's armory while wearing his ODST armor with his helmet laid on a table in front of him. He puts a new magazine into his Magnum and chambers a new round before holstering it. He then reached forward and grabbed the grip of his Battle rifle before grabbing a mag and putting it into the rifle. He pulled the charge bolt back and chambered a round. He then grabbed it with both hands and aimed it at the ground looking through the scope. He adjusts it a little before he holsters the battle rifle on his back thanks to magnetic locks. He then grabs his helmet and looked at the visor. Remembering all the battlefields he's been too and all the worlds that were lost.

"You certainly loaded up quickly." A voice said.

The war veteran turned and saw one of the original Overwatch strike team members, Torbjorn Lindholm. He spends most of his time in the workshop or armory working on weapons and even calibrating them. Cody had heard of him but never met the Omnic Crisis veteran.

"I've been told I have a mission in coming." Cody said, his voice it's usual neutral tone. "I didn't want to waste time."

"We're not exactly at War." Torbjorn said with a huff.

"For now." Cody said as he turns his helmet around and places it on his head.

Once his helmet is set, he leaves. He walked past Torbjorn who kept his eyes on him.

"I've heard of you, Calloway." Torbjorn said.

Cody stops and turns slightly to look at him.

"Mostly your weapons and armor." Torbjorn said, sounding interested in them. "If you ever need upgrades or support with them. Come find me."

Cody just nods, accepting the offer. If his gear is to remain in the best shape or perform the best, he'll need someone who knows their way around them. The door to the armory opens and a familiar figure steps in and quickly spots him.

"There you are." Gabriel Reyes said.

Cody looked at him and recognized him as Gabriel Reyes. One of the people he met in that town and one of the high-ranking Overwatch leaders. Knowing who he is, Cody salutes him.

"Commander." Cody greets.

"At ease, Calloway." Gabriel said.

Cody drops the salute and prepares for a potential mission related news.

"Morrison told me you'd be in here." Gabriel said.

"This about the mission, sir?" Cody asked.

"It is." Gabriel said with a nod. "Follow me."

Gabriel turns on his heel and leaves with Cody following him. They leave the armory and move through the base passing many Overwatch members who either greet Gabriel or continue doing their daily tasks. Most of Overwatch doesn't know Cody's origins so to them he's just a veteran of the Omnic Crisis like them. His fake origin and identity are all they have about him. Many of them of course don't even know him or his fake origin either. They just assume he's a veteran of the Crisis due to his gear and the fact that he's in Overwatch. Cody realized that most of the current members were Crisis veterans during his three days with Overwatch. They both reach a briefing room and walk inside after Gabriel used the access keypad. The door moves upwards, opening for them. The two walked into the room and inside waiting for them was Jack Morrison. The room was dark and had a single holo-table in the middle of the room. Gabriel walks over and stands beside Jack while Cody stood in front of them as the door closed.

"Calloway, glad to see you geared up." Jack comments. "You ready for your first mission?"

"I am." Cody says with a nod.

Jack nods back before he presses a button on the holo-table. A projection of Earth appears before the globe flattens and zooms in on an area in Southern France. A set of coordinates light up as it's labeled as an Old Omnic Base with the status of Unknown beside it.

"Three hours ago, we had sent a team to this old Omnic base in Southern France. We lost contact with them nearly 25 minutes ago." Jack explains. "We assumed the base wasn't as abandoned as we once thought. The last piece of contact we had, the search team mentioned something about remnants being found. Which usually means left over Omnics from the War."

"If remaining hostile Omnics are in that base, then those agents we lost contact with are either dead or captured." Gabriel said. "We need someone to get there and confirm whether or not those agents are alive or if the remnants mentioned mean Omnics."

"A search and rescue mission with a taste of reconnaissance." Cody concludes.

"Correct." Gabriel confirms.

"Once you've confirmed the status of our agents and the source of the threat, call it in and move to extract." Jack said. "The French Military will handle the rest."

"You won't be going in alone; we have another agent joining you." Gabriel said.

"Name?" Cody asked.

"Emre Sarioglu." Jack answered. "He's young but is among the fresh batch of recruits who joined Overwatch recently. He also has promise."

"We're placing him under your command for this mission, Sergeant." Gabriel informed.

Cody's still adjusting to being a Sergeant now instead of a Lieutenant. The ODST nods, accepting this. He's just hoping this Emre doesn't get himself killed like his own squadmates during the Covenant War. A brief image of the Covenant War were a rookie ODST is killed passes through Cody's mind, but he quickly shakes it off. The slight motion he gives is noticed by Jack and Gabriel who don't react to it but keep that in mind.

"When's the mission?" Cody asked.

"Private Sarioglu is already gearing up, I suggest you return to the armory to grab a suppressor and then head to launch bay 3." Jack said.

Cody used one hand to grab a suppressor he always has for times like this. He tosses it up into the air and catches it in his hand.

"Oh, you already have one." Jack said sounding slightly surprised and amused.

"Let the private know I'm waiting for him in the launch bay." Cody said as he put his suppressor away while turning and walking out of the room with the door opening and closing behind him.

Once he's gone, Jack turns off the holograms. Gabriel kept his eyes on the door.

"You saw that twitch too, right?" Gabriel asked.

"Yeah, I did."

[Launch Bay 3, sometime later]

Cody waits beside the dropship as he sits on a crate beside it while attaching his suppressor. Once he finished twisting it on and making sure it was tight, he noticed someone approaching in the classic blue armor of Overwatch. Cody stands up and attaches his battle rifle to his mag locks on his back while letting this man approach. He guessed this was Emre. When Emre reaches him, he salutes.

"Private Emre Sarioglu, reporting for duty." Emre greets.

"Sergeant Cody Calloway." Cody greets back to Emre. "I'll say this now; I'm just going to call you either Private or Emre."

"May I ask why, sir?" Emre asked.

"I cannot for the life of me pronounce your last name correctly." Cody revealed with honesty.

His neutral tone gives it almost a comedic edge. Emre thinks so as he almost smiled but held himself back but unfortunately for him, Cody saw it but didn't question it.

"Get on the dropship, we got a job to do." Cody said as he walked towards the dropship and up the back ramp.

Emre followed him onto the dropship. While Emre sits down and straps in, Cody walked up to the pilot. He grabs a handlebar before speaking to the pilot who looked at him.

"Let's go." Cody said.

"Roger that." The Pilot said.

The back ramp raises and closes before the dropship's thrusters kick on and lifts it off its landing gear. It at first slowly moves forward before it's clear and the speed increases. The dropship flew out of the hangar and began moving towards its objective. Cody then turned while letting go of the handlebar and walked towards a seat in front of Emre.

"I hope you were briefed." Cody said as he sat down.

"I was, sir." Emre said.

"Good, but I'll repeat it in a simplified way." Cody said. "A team of agents were dispatched to a once thought to be abandoned Omnic base, all contact was lost with potential evidence pointing towards hostile Omnics present in that base. Our job is to find those lost agents, confirm whether they are dead or alive, and confirm whether the threat is remaining hostile Omnics."

"And if it is?" Emre asked.

"Extract the agents and call it in. the French Military will take care of that base." Cody explains.

Cody then leans forward and looks straight into Emre's eyes.

"When we deploy, you do as I say and do not argue." Cody said. "Am I clear?"

"Yes, sir." Emre said with a nod.
