The navigable channel between the island's southern reef and the submerged volcanic ridge compressed from a twenty-two-kilometre gap to nine. Nine kilometres. At standard battle formation, nine kilometres was room for a vanguard of thirty ships abreast. Or, from the perpendicular, room for a line of fourteen to cut across the column's head.
