The kingdom's Temple of Record — the central archive maintained by the Crucible, where births, deaths, marriages, conscriptions, and every other administrative event in the kingdom's history were recorded on sheets of pressed bark-paper stored in climate-controlled vaults — received the final casualty reports from the field armies on Day 220.
Marshal Boreth signed the reports personally. He read each name — all 4,847 of them, one after another, the dead reduced to ink on bark-paper.
