In fact, Shiga Taka wasn't the only one who thought this. After witnessing Sayaka's descent into darkness, many viewers believed she was about to become the ultimate final boss.
However, as the story progressed, nearly all of them were stunned.
The Main Character, who was desperately searching for Sayaka, found Kyubey instead.
"Do you hate me too?" Kyubey asked from the shadows.
"If I hated you, would Sayaka be restored to her former self?" the Main Character replied, still relatively rational.
"No, that's beyond my power to achieve," Kyubey answered.
The Main Character sat down on a nearby bench, set her bag aside, and said dejectedly, "Hey... you said I could become a really powerful magical girl. Is that... true?"
Kyubey jumped onto the bench beside her and began its usual flattery. "Powerful is an understatement. You'll become an extraordinary magical girl—perhaps the strongest in the world."
It continued, "If you unleash your power, you could perform miracles... you might even be able to warp the laws of the universe... Madoka, if you truly desire it, you could become an omnipotent god."
"I... can I really do anything, even things that even Kyubey can't?"
"What do you mean?"
"If I make a contract with you, can you restore Sayaka's body to its original state?"
"Such a trivial matter is nothing. Is this wish worth sacrificing your soul for?"
"For Sayaka, yes, I can."
After this exchange, the Main Character was about to sign the contract with Kyubey.
However, just as she was about to say, "I want to become a magical girl," a sudden barrage of gunfire erupted—bang-bang-bang! Fifteen shots per second tore through Kyubey's body, leaving him riddled with holes. He collapsed weakly onto the chair.
The Main Character was startled. She turned to see Homura Akemi standing there.
Homura dropped the gun and approached her.
"Th-that was too much... You shouldn't have killed it, no matter what..." the Main Character protested.
"Why do you always sacrifice yourself like this?" Homura's voice was thick with emotion. "Useless, meaningless... Don't just throw yourself away so carelessly! Think about the people who care about you, okay? You have to stop this!"
She reached the Main Character, grabbed her shoulders, her body trembling slightly. Her voice cracked with tears. "If I lose you, someone will be heartbroken. Why can't you see that? What about those of us who want to protect you?"
In the air, droplets of water shimmered like Homura Akemi's tears.
The camera focused on her face, revealing that she was indeed crying.
Soon, she sank to her knees, utterly defeated.
"Homura?" the Main Character exclaimed in surprise.
She quickly stood up from her chair. A burst of static, accompanied by flickering images of a glitching screen, flashed across the scene.
"Have we... have we met somewhere before? You and I?" she blurted out, out of the blue.
"Th... that..." Homura stammered, tears streaming down her face.
The wind swept through her, making her long, black hair flutter around her.
Before Homura could answer, the Main Character continued, "I'm sorry, I have to go find Sayaka."
"Wait, Sayaka Miki already..."
Homura tried to interject, but the Main Character cut her off with another apology. "I'm sorry," she said, and hurried away.
"Wait!"
Homura tried to stand, but lost her balance and sank back to her knees.
She shouted after the retreating figure, "Madoka!"
But the Main Character didn't respond, didn't even look back. She climbed the stairs and quickly disappeared from Homura's sight.
Homura collapsed to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably.
Suddenly, Kyubey's voice rang out, "You never learn, do you? Even when you know it's pointless."
Even though it had been shot dead in an instant, fifteen times per second, a second Kyubey suddenly appeared on the fence nearby.
"While there are plenty of replacements, it's still a waste to have them destroyed pointlessly. It's quite bothersome," the second Kyubey said, hopping onto the bench and devouring the corpse of the first one completely.
Homura Akemi showed no surprise; this was clearly not her first encounter with such a scene.
She composed herself, stifled her tears, and stood up, brushing her hair aside.
"Though this is the second time you've killed me, it's thanks to that I've witnessed your attack patterns. Was that time manipulation magic?" the Kyubey asked, tilting its head and putting on an innocent act.
Homura Akemi stared expressionlessly, offering no reply. The Kyubey, however, took this as tacit agreement.
It blinked and continued, "As I suspected, despite your efforts to conceal it, you're not from this timeline, are you?"
"I know everything about your true identity and your schemes."
Finally, Homura Akemi spoke, dropping a bombshell: "I will never let you have your way, Kyubey. No, Incubator!"
The scene shifted to a train platform.
Sayaka sat slumped on a bench, her head bowed in silence.
Kyoko came running up to Sayaka.
"Finally found you."
She sat down beside Sayaka, pulled out a small bag of potato chips, opened it, and began comforting her while munching like a glutton.
"I'm sorry for causing you trouble," Sayaka said, her voice heavy with despair.
"What's this? You're not yourself at all," Kyoko said, baffled, chips still in her hand.
"It's nothing. I just feel like nothing matters anymore. I can't even remember what I'm supposed to cherish or protect."
As she spoke, Sayaka took out her Soul Gem.
The deep blue gem had become murky, almost black.
"Hey—!"
Kyoko was startled, even forgetting to eat.
"You once said that hope and despair balance each other out, right? Now I understand that perfectly. I've saved so many people, but that's also accumulated so much resentment and jealousy in my heart. And I've hurt my most important friend..."
Sayaka's voice was filled with despair. "To wish happiness for someone, I have to curse others equally. That's the structure of being a magical girl, isn't it?"
A background score played on violins and other instruments, creating a sense of impending tragedy.
Finally, Sayaka looked up at Kyoko, tears welling in her eyes and spilling down her cheeks.
"I'm such an idiot," she said with self-deprecating laughter.
A single tear fell onto her already stained Soul Gem. In the next instant, the gem shattered, unleashing a powerful force that sent Kyoko flying backward.
A bizarre phenomenon engulfed Sayaka, pulling her into its depths as if she were falling into the deep sea.
"Sayaka!" Kyoko cried out in desperation.
The scene shifted to a crescent moon hanging in the sky. Kyubey stood on a high vantage point, gazing in a certain direction as he revealed the truth: "In this country, growing girls are called 'girls,' right? Then, you who will ultimately become Witches should be called 'magical girls.'"
Sayaka wasn't simply turning dark—she was transforming from a magical girl into a Witch!
Earlier, Kyubey's claim that Homura Akemi "didn't belong to this timeline" had already surprised viewers. But the idea of a magical girl becoming a Witch was even more shocking, sending shivers down their spines.
As the eighth episode ended, the internet erupted in heated discussion once again.
