Beep... Beep... Beep...
The rhythmic hum of an ECG monitor echoed softly.
Hiss—
Inside a pristine laboratory, a tiny Stegosaurus lay perfectly still within a cradle-like incubation pod. As the cylindrical glass canopy smoothly slid open, a cloud of sterile white vapor billowed outward. A pair of gloved hands reached in, gently cradling the hatchling.
"Dr. Wu, the incubation cycle for the latest generation of Stegosaurus has been highly successful. However..."
The male research assistant held the infant dinosaur close as he approached Dr. Henry Wu, who was currently cross-referencing a digital manifest of the newly hatched specimens. Wu looked up from his screen, his gaze lingering on the tiny creature in the assistant's arms. He frowned slightly. "Is there an issue?"
"Their physical development is flawless. In fact, this specific specimen... you could say he expresses every dominant genetic trait perfectly. The integration between the master gene strand and the filler DNA sequence is absolute textbook quality."
Dr. Wu carefully took the young Stegosaurus from his assistant, holding the small body with a slight air of unfamiliarity, waiting patiently for the punchline.
"The sole anomaly is that he is suffering from extreme dehydration. We suspect it was an underlying issue during the embryonic development phase. His metabolic demand for water is roughly five times that of the other hatchlings in the clutch... To borrow a bit of internet slang, is he born with a 'dehydration-dominant build'? ...Ah, sorry."
The assistant tried to crack a lighthearted joke to ease the clinical tension, but Dr. Wu's expression remained entirely deadpan, causing the assistant to instantly stifle his smile.
Steady, rhythmic breathing.
Unused to cradling a dinosaur hatchling roughly the size of a human infant, Wu slipped his hands beneath the creature's forelimbs and held him up directly in front of his face.
"He won't be able to survive away from a continuous water source for the rest of his life. As he matures, his consumption demands will only skyrocket. Honestly... living like that might be absolute torture for him. The veterinary panel is strongly recommending euthanasia. What are your thoughts, Doctor?"
"Give him a chance."
Dr. Wu answered without a shred of hesitation. A magnificent creation was always entitled to a touch of scientific favoritism, even if it bore a deep biological defect.
"Give him a chance to live."
Purr...
Perhaps sensing a sudden chill in the air, the tiny Stegosaurus blinked its eyes open. Through a hazy, unfocused film, the blurred silhouette of a white lab coat materialized, but before its vision could fully clear, the hatchling drifted back into a deep slumber.
And thus, the saga of an outcast Stegosaurus began.
"Aunnng—"
Inside the Stegosaurus Enclosure at Jurassic World, the resident herd bellowed a collective welcome to the newcomers. The population consisted entirely of females, save for the two massive, dominant dinos that governed the hierarchy.
Originally, the operations department of Jurassic World intended to adhere strictly to the traditional protocol of keeping the park's dinosaurs entirely female. However, the unexpected birth of two male specimens within this specific herd had radically shifted their corporate perspective.
The presence of an established alpha pair drastically reduced internal conflict and aggressive competition within the herd, and the subsequent psychological welfare evaluations of the animals skyrocketed by a full tier.
Consequently, Jurassic World began implementing male-female pairing configurations across various species during the cloning process. In return, a rigorous genetic engineering mechanism colloquially known as a "breeding lock" was introduced to prevent any unauthorized, natural reproduction.
The young hatchlings trotted after a high-ranking matriarch toward a designated feeding "respawn point." By this time, however, the water-deficient Stegosaurus, whom we would later know as Stego bro, had already broken away from the group, setting his sights solely on the lakeside.
Gulp... gulp... gulp...
Absolute gluttony!
A massive, sweeping shadow suddenly blotted out the light over Stego bro. He craned his neck upward, locking eyes with the absolute ruler of the territory.
"Aunnng—"
The mature dino let out an aggressive, booming bellow, forcefully herding the young Stego bro back toward the main column.
Unable to withstand such raw, dominant pressure, Stego bro could only turn tail and scurry away as fast as his stubby legs could carry him.
One month after entering the enclosure.
Gulp... gulp... gulp...
Drip... drop... drip... drop...
Wherever Stego bro walked, he left a perpetual trail of damp, muddy footprints in his wake. Before long, the rest of the herd began to eye him with mounting hostility. After all... not every Stegosaurus appreciated living in a swamp.
Can you imagine trying to lay down on a pristine lawn to sunbathe, only to realize the entire patch of grass beneath you is completely waterlogged?
Because Stego bro was still a juvenile, the herd managed to tolerate his existence for a time. But as luck would have it, today his misfortune led him straight to the alpha dino.
"Aunnng!"
A massive, spike-laden tail slammed into the turf, kicking up a violent wave of shredded grass and mud. The verdict was absolute: Stego bro was officially exiled.
"Aunng..."
Stego bro let out a submissive, mournful cry, but an alpha dino is a tyrant by nature; it holds no sympathy for the weak, even if the offender is merely a growing juvenile.
BOOM!
The tail struck the ground once more, a displaced gale of wind whipping through the air, narrowly missing Stego bro's flank.
Terrified, he bolted into the wilderness.
Deep within the slender-timber forest, dense undergrowth grew in abundance, yet there wasn't a single plant suitable for Stego bro's diet.
Stegosaurus possessed incredibly small, rudimentary teeth incapable of grinding down tough, fibrous vegetation; they relied almost entirely on low-lying mosses, soft ferns, and ground cover.
Rumble...
His stomach let out an aggressive groan of protest. Fortunately, he had heavily gorged himself on water just before his exile, meaning he could hold out for a little while longer.
What am I supposed to do now?
Moisture welled up in the corners of Stego bro's eyes, looking for all the world as if he were on the verge of crying. But as his gaze drifted down to a cluster of smooth pebbles on the riverbed, something buried deep within his genetic memory sparked.
To alleviate the immense burden of digesting raw vegetation, Stegosaurus instinctively swallowed gastroliths, gizzard stones.
As his dormant instincts awakened, Stego bro attempted to swallow a stone. His first attempt failed miserably because he hadn't selected a properly shaped pebble, but it didn't matter. He tried again.
Gulp...
The stone slid down smoothly. Having a solid weight sitting in his gut felt surprisingly comforting. Perhaps it was time to give those tough bushes another shot?
Crunch... rip...
Tearing through the fibrous branches was an absolute chore, but against all odds, he managed to swallow the pulp.
Drip.
The distinct, echoing sound of splashing water instantly seized Stego bro's attention. Driven by sheer desperation, he broke into a frantic jog toward the source.
Beneath a jagged rock formation, crystal-clear spring water seeped out drop by drop, gradually pooling within a hollowed-out depression in the stone.
A small puddle!
Stego bro had never been happier.
Stego bro. Age: Five months.
The four ivory-white bony spikes at the tip of his tail, his thagomizer, had fully developed, showing off their lethal silhouettes. Stego bro twisted his torso, looking back at his own tail with immense curiosity.
WHACK!
He swung, striking a slender sapling. The tree trembled violently, sending a handful of leaves fluttering down to the dirt.
Stego bro felt a sharp twinge of impact pain reverberate through his muscles, but in that exact moment, he realized what this appendage truly was: a weapon.
He swung his tail sequentially, striking the tree over and over, but aside from making the trunk shudder, the impacts yielded no significant results.
This isn't right. There's no power behind it.
Stego bro stared at the virtually unblemished bark of the sapling, sinking into deep contemplation.
Perhaps... I need a wider arc?
Facing the tree once more, he coiled his tail tight, anchored his front limbs, and slammed them into the dirt! Utilizing the kinetic rebound, he hoisted his hindquarters completely off the ground, spinning his entire lower body toward the sapling in a violent, rotational arc! Before his feet even touched the turf, his tail snapped outward like a loaded spring!
A combat technique woven entirely into his DNA.
BANG!
The young, sharp spikes drove deep into the solid wood. And at this point in time, Stego bro was merely a five-month-old juvenile.
As time marched on, trees within his hidden grove collapsed one after another. Stego bro's martial prowess grew sharper and more lethal with each passing day.
Stego bro. Age: Ten years.
Whoosh—
A torrential downpour cascaded from the heavens. The microclimate of Isla Nublar was perpetually volatile.
Deprived of the dense forest canopy's protection, Stego bro could only curl his massive frame tightly beneath a rocky overhang, yet the driving rain still soaked him to the bone.
Any creature that disrupted the balance of nature would inevitably face nature's reckoning; this was the very first lesson Stego bro learned entirely on his own.
A dull, throbbing ache flared up in his abdomen, the long-term consequence of consuming flora completely unsuited to his digestive tract.
A flicker of agony crossed Stego bro's features, but as he watched his nearly depleted watering hole rapidly fill with fresh, clean rain, a surge of pure joy washed away the pain.
Time to drink again~
Stego bro. Age: Ten years (Maturity).
The small puddle had long since dried up completely, and fresh saplings had reclaimed the clearing, yet Stego bro's silhouette was nowhere to be found in his old sanctuary.
"Aunnng—"
With a violent, thunderous slam of his tail against the turf, Stego bro stood squared off against the old alpha dino that had exiled him a decade prior.
Slash—CRACK!
The old alpha's thagomizer whipped across Stego bro's flank, slicing open the flesh, but the impact only elicited a minor sting of irritation.
Your spikes... seem a little dull, don't they?
BOOM!
The earth shuddered as his forelimbs planted! Ten years of sharpening a single blade culminated in this exact moment. Stego bro poured every ounce of his massive strength into a blinding rotational spin, his tail snapping outward in a microsecond! The old alpha could barely register the residual blur.
Puncture—
"Aunng..."
The old bull let out a pathetic, agonizing wail. Stego bro's spikes had driven straight through the thick muscle of the alpha's thigh, seemingly lodging deep against the bone. Stego bro had to violently wrench his tail back and forth several times before his thagomizer finally tore free, spraying a violent arc of crimson across the sky, completely soaking the grass below.
Look at that. You got the lawn all wet.
"Aunnng—"
Stego bro bellowed a triumphant challenge, driving the old, broken alpha into exile. The surrounding herd members echoed his call, trumpeting their submission to welcome their new king. However...
Stego bro did not drop his combat posture.
"Aunnng—"
You all seem to be misunderstanding something. He isn't the only one being exiled. You are all being exiled with him.
The Stegosaurus herd froze in absolute shock at this sudden turn of events. They looked blankly at one another, completely unable to comprehend the logic of their new alpha.
"Aunnng—"
If you refuse to leave...
Stego bro shifted his tail, tilting the array of spikes from a horizontal alignment to a menacing vertical wedge. The residual blood dripped slowly from the ivory tips, a sight that struck primal terror into the hearts of every dinosaur present.
He had never cared about ruling a herd, nor had he ever harbored a desire for petty revenge... All he ever wanted was a water source where he could exist completely unbothered.
His cold gaze swept over the very kin that had abandoned him to the wild.
Since you're all still standing there... I guess I'll just have to beat every single one of you.
[Jurassic World Incident Report: ****//, 3:24 PM] Sixteen Stegosaurus confirmed injured. Three present with critical lacerations; thirteen present with minor trauma.
[Jurassic World Management Log: ****//, 8:00 AM] Specimen "Dehydrated Stegosaurus" has been officially transferred to Stegosaurus Enclosure Facility No. 2.
[Jurassic World Incident Report: ****//, 8:13 AM] Local dominant male of Enclosure No. 2 initiated a territorial dispute with specimen "Dehydrated Stegosaurus."
[Jurassic World Incident Report: ****//, 10:46 AM] Thirty Stegosaurus confirmed injured. Two fatalities recorded; twelve present with critical lacerations; six present with minor trauma.
"Doctor! This... this Stegosaurus... is that thing even a Stegosaurus?!"
In reality, such an outcome wasn't surprising in the slightest. The dinosaurs raised within the pristine confines of the park's enclosures lived lives of absolute luxury and pampering; they maintained only the bare minimum of ritualistic display to settle disputes. None of them possessed a fraction of the brutal, decade-long combat conditioning that Stego bro had forged in isolation.
"This particular specimen has an unsustainably high dependency on water resources, and his extreme psychological aversion to herd mechanics makes integration impossible. He represents a massive financial liability to the corporation. The advisory panel has decided to proceed with euthanasia—"
"No. I know of a place far better suited for his unique temperament. A... brand-new enclosure."
The Primeval Ecological Zone. The Great Lake.
When Stego bro next opened his eyes, an endless expanse of lush, pristine vegetation and a gargantuan, sparkling lake filled his field of vision.
Blinking in utter disbelief at his surroundings, Stego bro cautiously, step by step, approached the water's edge.
"Aunnng—"
A herd of Parasaurolophus was already stationed along the bank, quietly rehydrating. Facing these unfamiliar dinosaurs, Stego bro unleashed a deafening, resonant bellow. His hardwired instinct was to instantly claim ownership of the domain.
The Parasaurolophus herd merely glanced back at him for a brief moment. A few seconds later, they simply lowered their heads and resumed drinking, completely ignoring Stego bro's grand display.
Uh... well, this is incredibly awkward.
To break the tension, Stego bro slowly stepped forward, lowered his massive head, and took a few long gulps of water. Through this act, he quickly deduced the primary rule of the Great Lake: the water source was entirely communal.
It looks like... I don't have to fight anymore?
A life of absolute tranquility quickly softened Stego bro's battle-hardened edges. A lazy, unbothered existence was, after all, the true meaning of a dinosaur's life. Basking in the warm sun every day, drinking his fill of water, and munching on fresh green grass, this was the ultimate paradise.
"Roar—"
Hmm?
Stego bro caught a sudden movement behind him. He turned his head lazily, spotting an unfamiliar, moderately sized dinosaur... though he couldn't quite explain why its presence sent a faint, instinctual shiver of dread down his spine.
Gulp... gulp... gulp...
Stego bro didn't sense any immediate malice or an overt threat to his person from the youth, so he chose to ignore the newcomer entirely, lowering his head back to the water.
"Roar!"
The young dinosaur seemed a bit irritated. Was it here to drink water too?
Stego bro shifted his massive frame slightly to the side, carving out a clear space along the bank to let the stranger drink. To his surprise, the creature actually stepped forward, lapped up two hasty mouthfuls of water, and instantly turned tail to bolt back into the brush.
But taking such tiny sips... there was no way that could possibly quench a real thirst... Especially considering the creature's lean, adolescent frame...
What a thoroughly silly kid.
