Chapter 13 - Chapter 13:The Ghosts Of The Past

She thought she had left the past behind. She thought the fragile balance they had found wouldn't be disturbed.

But the past has a way of showing up when you least expect it.

It started with a text. A name she hadn't seen in years flashing on her phone. Alex. Her chest tightened the moment she saw it. Her fingers hovered, unsure if she wanted to open the message or delete it immediately.

"Hey… I need to talk to you. It's important."

Her stomach dropped. She knew this wasn't casual. Alex was… complicated. The kind of person who left emotional scars that didn't fully heal, the kind that lingered in corners of memory and whispered doubts when you were trying to move forward.

Her first instinct was to ignore it. She had someone now someone she was learning to trust, learning to love in small, cautious steps. She couldn't let Alex's sudden reappearance disrupt that fragile growth.

But curiosity and unresolved tension tugged at her. She couldn't delete it. Not yet.

Later that evening, she saw him. His smile, warm but tired, made her heart squeeze. He noticed her hesitation immediately.

"You're quiet," he said. Concern laced his tone.

"I… got a message," she admitted, fumbling with her bag. "From someone… from my past."

His brow furrowed. "Someone who matters?"

"Someone who… shouldn't," she said quickly, but she saw the reaction anyway. The subtle tightening of his jaw. The faint shadow crossing his eyes.

She didn't want this. She didn't want to test him. But the past doesn't ask permission.

"I'll handle it," he said finally, voice low but firm. "Whatever this is, we deal with it together."

She appreciated the words, but part of her panicked. What if this wasn't simple? What if Alex's return brought old wounds, secrets, or even jealousy into their fragile connection?

The next day, the message came again, this time more insistent. "Please… it's urgent. I need to see you."

She didn't tell him immediately. She wanted to figure out how to respond without creating suspicion or hurt. But every time her phone buzzed, her heart skipped.

When she finally met him that evening, she felt the weight of unresolved history pressing down. Alex was waiting, leaning against the corner of the café, familiar and infuriating all at once. His eyes lit up when he saw her, but there was something else there something serious.

"Hi," he said simply. "Thanks for coming."

She hesitated. "This… what's this about?"

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I didn't handle things well before. I know that. But… I can't ignore it anymore. I need closure."

Closure. That word made her stomach twist. She had tried to find it years ago, had convinced herself she had moved on. But Alex had a way of reopening doors she thought were locked.

As they talked, her mind kept drifting to him the one she was trying to build something real with. The one who had promised to stay.

Would he hear about this? Would he understand that this wasn't about wanting Alex back, but about finishing a chapter properly before fully moving forward? Or would he feel threatened, betrayed, or replaced?

Her phone buzzed again. She glanced down. A message from him: "Everything okay?"

Her chest tightened. She typed back carefully: "It's nothing, just… someone from my past. Don't worry."

The words felt like a lie, even to her.

Alex noticed the glance at her phone. "Everything okay?" he asked, more sharply this time.

She nodded, forcing a smile. "Yeah. It's fine."

But it wasn't fine. Not really.

When she finally left the café, she felt the tension follow her. She knew she had to tell him eventually the one she cared about, the one she was choosing. But fear gnawed at her. Fear that this ghost from the past could fracture everything they were slowly building.

And as she walked, heart pounding, she realized something terrifying: sometimes love isn't just about choosing someone in the present. It's about facing the shadows of the past together.

And maybe, just maybe, that was the ultimate test.
