Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 – Anaya’s First Case

The courtroom smelled of old files and fear.

Anaya adjusted her black coat.

It was her first case.

Across the room sat a thin man in torn clothes.

His crime:

Stealing bread.

Why did you do it? Anaya asked him quietly.

My daughter hadn't eaten for two days, he said, eyes down.

The rich shop owner stood proudly.

He is a thief, he said.

Punish him.

Anaya remembered her grandfather's words:

Law without humanity is also a crime.

She stood before the judge.

My client stole bread, she said,

but hunger stole his choice.

She showed proof of unpaid wages.

The man worked for the shop owner.

Silence filled the hall.

The judge spoke,

This court punishes injustice, not hunger.

The man was freed.

The shop owner fined.

Outside, reporters asked,

Why defend a criminal?

Anaya replied,

Because sometimes poverty is treated like a crime.

That night, Aarav's photo smiled from the wall.

Meera whispered,

Our story continues.

Anaya wrote in her diary:

I will be rich in courage.

And the city learned again…

Justice is not gold.

It is backbone.
