Chapter 260 - Chapter 260:

I pushed my feet hard against the flat stones of the arena to steady my balance after our last quick exchange of blows. The metal of my sword was warm in my hands, and my breath came out in short, quick puffs in the cool air of the basement. Chalreth stood opposite me, her face completely calm as she adjusted her grip on the smooth handle of her weapon. She took a slow step backward, moving her boots with perfect control across the rough gray surface of the floor. The sound of her movement was quiet, almost hidden by the echo of our previous clanking weapons. I watched her shoulders closely, waiting for any small sign that would tell me where her next strike would go. The torches on the stone walls flickered gently, casting long, dark shadows that stretched across the open space between us. I lifted my blade back into a high guard position, ready to move my body the very instant she decided to dash forward again.

Chalreth did not let me rest for long on the hard floor. She moved her body forward with another sudden burst of speed, her boots making a sharp tapping sound against the flat stone blocks. She came straight toward me, lifting her sword to launch a diagonal strike at my left shoulder. I saw the movement of her arms and quickly lifted my blade to meet hers. Our weapons collided with a loud clanking noise that rang through the entire basement room. The force of her strike sent a strong vibration running up through my arms, making my fingers tighten even harder around the metal handle. Before I could push her blade away, she pulled her weapon back and spun her body around in a fast circle. She used the momentum of her spin to throw a low horizontal sweep aimed directly at my ankles. I had to react without thinking, letting my instincts guide my legs. I jumped high into the air, lifting my feet completely off the ground as her sharp blade passed harmlessly beneath my boots. The wind from her swing rushed under my feet as I remained suspended in the air for a brief moment above the stones.

As my body started to fall back down toward the arena floor, Chalreth looked up and prepared another fast attack. She did not wait for my boots to touch the ground safely. She thrust her sword upward, aiming the sharp tip straight toward my chest while I was still in the air. I had to use my weapon defensively to save myself from the incoming blow. I brought my blade down with force, striking the side of her sword to deflect it away from my body. The metal pieces clanked together sharply in the middle of the air. The impact altered my landing position slightly, causing me to hit the stone floor with a heavy thud. I stumbled backward two steps, my boots scraping against the rough surface as I tried to regain my balance. Chalreth followed me immediately, refusing to give me any open space to recover my breath. She unleashed a flurry of three consecutive vertical cuts, moving her arms so rapidly that her weapon looked like a continuous wall of metal coming toward my face. I moved my sword left and right, blocking each strike just in the nick of time as the loud ringing of metal filled the basement.

My arms were beginning to feel heavy from the constant impact of her powerful strikes, but my body kept moving on its own. I ducked my head low to avoid a sudden horizontal swing that cut right above my hair. I felt the cool air move as her blade passed over me. I rolled across the hard stone floor to the right side, using the momentum to separate myself from her close position. I scrambled back onto my feet quickly, lifting my sword back into a defensive stance. Chalreth turned her body around to face me again, her expression still completely relaxed as if this intense match was completely easy for her. She took two slow steps forward, letting her weapon hang loosely by her side for a moment. I knew I had to try my throwing technique again to disrupt her steady rhythm. I took a deep breath, focused my eyes on her torso, and flung my sword directly at her with all the strength left in my arm. The weapon left my hand, spinning rapidly through the air like a silver wheel as it flew straight toward her.

Chalreth lifted her weapon smoothly and parried my thrown sword with a quick, effortless motion of her wrist. The metal clanked loudly, and my sword flew backward into the air as usual. But this time, I did not just stand in my place to wait for its return. I dashed forward right behind the path of my spinning weapon, running as fast as my legs could carry me across the flat stones. As the sword came back toward my position, I leaped into the air and caught the handle firmly with both of my hands. I used the forward speed of my run to transition into a heavy downward strike, bringing the blade down toward her head with immense force. Chalreth looked up, her eyes widening slightly as she saw my combined attack. She quickly brought her sword up horizontally above her head, using both of her hands to support the flat side of her blade. Our weapons crashed together with the loudest sound of the entire match, a sharp ring that echoed deeply off the high ceiling of the arena.

We stayed locked in that position for several seconds, our blades pressed tightly against each other in the middle of the room. I pushed down with all my physical weight, trying to force her weapon down toward the floor, while Chalreth pushed upward with steady strength to keep my blade away from her body. The metal of our swords groaned under the immense pressure of our bodies. I could feel the heat radiating from the point where the two blades met. Chalreth smiled slightly as she maintained her hold, showing that she still had plenty of energy left in reserve. Suddenly, she twisted her weapon to the side, breaking the blade lock and causing my sword to slide off her steel edge. The sudden loss of resistance made my body lean forward off-balance. Chalreth took advantage of my stumble immediately, spinning her frame around and delivering a quick, open-handed push against my shoulder that sent me sliding backward across the smooth stone blocks for several feet before I could stop my feet.

I planted my boots firmly into the ground, stopping my backward movement just before hitting the far wall of the arena. I shook my arms to get rid of the numbness caused by the heavy blade lock. Chalreth did not wait for me to recover completely. She began to move her feet in a zigzag pattern, rushing toward my position with incredible speed. As she closed the distance, she began to perform a series of dizzying feints, shifting her sword from left to right so quickly that it became impossible to tell which direction the real attack was coming from. My instinct worked to its absolute limit as I tried to read her movements. She feinted toward my neck, but the real strike came toward my right leg. I dropped my weapon down just in time, blocking the blow with the lower part of my blade. The metal clanked sharply. She immediately brought her weapon back up, striking at my left side. I twisted my body and parried the hit, my boots sliding an inch on the stones.

We were now in a continuous cycle of close combat, our weapons moving in a fast blur under the dim torchlight. I threw a quick upward slash, which she blocked by tilting her blade downward. She countered with a swift thrust aimed at my shoulder, forcing me to lean my torso back as far as possible to avoid the point. I swung my sword horizontally from the right, but she ducked beneath the path of the blade smoothly. As she rose back up, our eyes met for a brief second in the middle of the action. We both moved our weapons at the exact same time, launching identical vertical strikes that clashed perfectly in the center of the space. The impact pushed both of us back two steps away from each other. We stood there on the flat stones of the basement arena, our breathing heavy and loud in the quiet room. We held our swords ready by our sides, waiting to see who would make the next fast move forward on the hard stone ground to begin another extremely high speed practice round of extremely fast physical combat under the mansion walls together as a team on this beautiful bright morning right now.
