Chapter 25 - The Day She Lost Everything

The courtroom was suffocatingly quiet.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The cruel kind.

The kind that sat heavy in the air, pressing down on every breath, every heartbeat, every glance.

At the defendant's stand, Kang Ji Hoon sat with his head lowered, his shoulders stiff and heavy with shame. He looked nothing like the son Kang Eun Ji had raised. Nothing like the boy she had protected, loved, and trusted with every exhausted part of herself.

Today, he looked like a stranger.

And that truth hurt more than anything.

On the other side of the room, the prosecutor stood tall and composed, a file in his hand and confidence in his eyes. He looked like a man who already knew how this would end.

At the gallery bench, Kang Eun Ji sat frozen.

Her face was pale.

Her lips had lost all color.

Beside her sat Lee Mi Ran and Officer Jung, both silent, both tense, both painfully aware that the ground beneath Eun Ji's life was cracking apart right in front of them.

At the front, the judge adjusted his glasses and looked down at the file before him.

"Proceed."

The prosecutor stepped forward.

"Kang Ji Hoon."

Ji Hoon slowly lifted his head.

His eyes were dull. Empty. Defeated.

"Tell this court clearly…" the prosecutor said, his voice sharp enough to cut through bone. "What was your motive behind all this?"

Ji Hoon swallowed.

Then lowered his gaze again.

"Money."

The word landed like a stone dropped into still water.

A faint murmur spread across the courtroom.

Kang Eun Ji closed her eyes.

Just for a second.

As if she could shut out reality by refusing to look at it.

As if darkness could somehow make this hurt less.

"So," the prosecutor continued, "you admit your involvement was entirely for money?"

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No excuse.

No denial.

Just a clean, merciless confession.

Eun Ji felt something inside her crack.

"Did you, at any point, take advantage of the fact that your mother is an officer?"

Ji Hoon looked up immediately.

"No, sir."

"Are you certain?"

"Yes, sir."

The prosecutor flipped through the file in his hand, calm and methodical.

"Then tell the court," he said, "how much money did you receive?"

Ji Hoon's throat bobbed.

His fingers curled into fists.

"Forty million won."

This time, the silence that followed was heavier.

Ugly.

Unforgiving.

Kang Eun Ji didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't breathe.

Forty million won.

Her son had sold his conscience, her name, and her entire life for forty million won.

Beside her, Officer Jung turned slightly, glancing at her face.

The look in his eyes darkened instantly.

Concern.

Anger.

Helplessness.

But before anyone could speak, the defense attorney rose from his seat.

"Your Honor," he began firmly, "my client has already admitted that his motive was purely financial."

He adjusted his jacket and continued.

"It was an act of greed, yes—but an individual act. I ask the court to consider that fact alone."

The prosecutor turned sharply.

"Then why," he asked, "should this court not consider the possibility that Officer Kang Eun Ji may have knowingly or unknowingly aided him?"

Kang Eun Ji's eyes widened.

Lee Mi Ran stiffened beside her.

The defense attorney slammed a hand onto the desk.

"Objection, Your Honor!"

His voice echoed through the room.

"That is pure speculation. There is no evidence linking Officer Kang Eun Ji to the defendant's personal actions."

The prosecutor didn't back down.

"Her son committed financial fraud while benefiting from the public trust attached to her name—"

"That is an assumption!"

"It is a valid line of inquiry!"

"Not without evidence!"

Voices clashed.

Sharp.

Hostile.

Relentless.

The courtroom, which had been suffocatingly silent just moments ago, suddenly erupted into overlapping arguments and rising tempers.

"You cannot destroy a woman's career over suspicion—" the defense attorney snapped.

"Then prove she had no involvement!" the prosecutor fired back.

"The burden of proof is yours!"

"Enough!"

The judge's voice slammed through the courtroom like thunder.

Instant silence.

Everyone froze.

Even breathing felt dangerous.

The judge looked down at the documents before him, expression unreadable.

Then, slowly, he removed his glasses.

"After reviewing the report submitted to this court…"

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Too detached for the devastation it was about to deliver.

"…the defendant, Kang Ji Hoon, is hereby ordered to return the full amount of forty million won."

Ji Hoon lowered his head in defeat.

"In addition to that amount," the judge continued, "an extra forty million won shall be imposed as penalty payment."

Eighty million won.

A punishment.

A humiliation.

A stain that would not wash off.

But the worst was still coming.

"This court also issues a strict formal warning."

Kang Eun Ji's fingers tightened in her lap.

Then the judge's gaze shifted toward her.

"As for Officer Kang Eun Ji…"

The entire room seemed to hold its breath.

"…because this crime was committed by her own son under circumstances that may affect public trust…"

Eun Ji went completely still.

"…her name cannot be cleared without documented evidence."

It felt as though something cold had wrapped around her throat.

Beside her, Officer Jung's jaw tightened so hard it looked painful.

"Until such evidence is provided…"

The judge paused.

And in that pause, Eun Ji's entire life stood at the edge of a cliff.

"…she will be removed from active duty."

Her breath caught.

Lee Mi Ran turned toward her instantly, eyes wide with shock.

Ji Hoon's face crumpled with guilt.

But Kang Eun Ji…

didn't react.

Didn't speak.

Didn't cry.

She only sat there, as if the sentence had hollowed her out from the inside.

"Court adjourned."

The gavel struck.

Bang.

And just like that—

her life ended in public.

The courthouse doors swung open.

Daylight poured in.

But it did nothing to warm the cold emptiness inside Kang Eun Ji.

She stepped out slowly, pale and hollow, like someone whose soul had been drained and left behind inside that courtroom.

Behind her, Lee Mi Ran and Officer Jung followed closely, almost instinctively placing themselves near her as if they feared she might collapse at any second.

The moment she appeared—

the crowd surged forward.

"Officer Kang! Did you know about your son's crimes?"

"Did you use your position to protect him?"

"Are you resigning today?"

The questions came like bullets.

Fast.

Violent.

Merciless.

Camera flashes exploded in her face.

Phones were shoved inches from her eyes.

Voices rose from every direction until they blurred into one ugly roar of accusation and judgment.

Then something flew.

A crumpled paper cup landed near her feet.

A second later, a plastic bottle came hurling through the air.

"Fraud!"

"Shame on you!"

"Get out!"

Eun Ji flinched.

Just slightly.

But she didn't say a word.

Not because she had nothing to say.

But because there was nothing left in her to say it.

Officer Jung immediately stepped in front of her, his body shielding hers from the chaos.

"Back off!"

His voice cut through the crowd with sharp authority.

At the same time, Lee Mi Ran grabbed Eun Ji gently but firmly by the arm and pulled her away from the reporters, guiding her toward the side of the courthouse steps.

And that was when they saw them.

Waiting.

Like vultures.

Director Park.

And the Chief.

Both stood stiffly, their expressions unreadable, as if they had been waiting for this exact moment.

As if they had prepared themselves to enjoy it.

Eun Ji stopped walking.

Director Park stepped forward first.

In his hand was a sealed envelope.

"Officer Kang Eun Ji."

His voice was formal.

Cold.

A beat passed.

Then he continued.

"Effective immediately…"

His words were neat. Polished. Administrative.

"…you are officially terminated from duty."

Lee Mi Ran looked up in disbelief.

"Sir—"

"This decision is final."

The Chief cut her off before she could even finish.

His voice was flat. Detached.

Like he was reading from a memo.

"Hand over your badge."

Silence.

For a long moment, Kang Eun Ji simply stared at them.

Her eyes were empty.

Officer Jung's jaw tightened.

"You're doing this here?" he asked, disbelief and disgust thick in his voice.

Director Park didn't even blink.

"The department cannot afford further damage to its public image."

Of course.

Image.

Always image.

Never truth.

Never loyalty.

Never the years she had bled for that badge.

Just image.

A long, unbearable silence stretched between them.

Then, slowly…

Kang Eun Ji reached into her coat pocket.

Her fingers trembled as they closed around the badge.

When she pulled it out, the metal caught the light for a brief, painful second.

She stared at it.

Too long.

As if trying to memorize the weight of it one last time.

As if trying to hold on to the only proof that her sacrifices had once meant something.

Then, quietly—

she placed it into Director Park's hand.

Neither man softened.

Not even for a second.

"You will also surrender your service ID and department access before the end of the day," the Chief said.

Director Park tucked the badge away.

"You may leave."

That was it.

No sympathy.

No gratitude.

No acknowledgment of the years she had served.

No recognition of the cases she had solved.

No respect for the woman she had been.

Just dismissal.

Like she had never mattered at all.

And somehow…

that hurt more than the court ruling.

Without another word, the three of them began walking down the courthouse steps together.

Kang Eun Ji in the middle.

Lee Mi Ran at her side.

Officer Jung just behind them.

The crowd parted only enough to let them pass, but the judgment in their eyes remained.

Sharp.

Ugly.

Hungry.

Eun Ji kept walking.

One step.

Then another.

And another.

As if stopping would mean collapsing.

As if if she paused even once, she would never be able to stand again.

Eventually, the three of them disappeared beyond the crowd.

And silence settled over the courthouse steps once more.

For a moment, Director Park watched the empty space where she had stood.

Then he exhaled.

"Finally."

The Chief gave a small, satisfied smile.

"The woman we all thought was untouchable is gone."

Director Park adjusted his cuffs.

"That's the problem with women like her," he said lazily.

"Give them a title, and they start believing they belong here."

The Chief scoffed.

"Why would a woman even want to be an officer?"

He shook his head.

"Men are already here to do this kind of work."

Director Park smirked faintly.

"Exactly."

His eyes were cold.

"Public pressure. Emotional weakness. Poor judgment…"

He gave a dismissive shrug.

"They were never built for this job."

The Chief glanced toward the courthouse exit.

"The public already hates her."

Then he let out a humorless chuckle.

"This just proves what we've always known."

A beat passed.

Then, with absolute certainty, he said—

"Women are not meant for this."

Director Park gave one last glance toward the direction Kang Eun Ji had disappeared.

Cold.

Final.

"Good riddance."

Then the two men turned and walked away.

Leaving the courthouse steps empty.

Leaving behind only the echo of humiliation…

and the quiet beginning of something far more dangerous.

Because the day they buried Kang Eun Ji—

was also the day they created the woman who would destroy them.
