With heavy dark circles under her eyes, Eternal Meteor stopped replaying last night in her head.
After getting scared that badly, she hadn't slept a wink. She seriously couldn't understand what had gotten into Symboli Rudolf lately.
She turned her head and looked around the classroom—hardly anyone had arrived yet. Hugging her arms to her chest, she leaned back in her chair, closed her eyes, and waited for the teacher, her head bobbing little by little.
"Morning, Meteor."
"Morn—… haaah."
Hearing someone call her, Eternal Meteor cracked one eye open, yawned behind her hand, and greeted Mejiro McQueen, who had just come in.
"Are you alright?" McQueen asked, concern obvious on her face. Meteor looked like she'd stayed up all night.
Meteor just waved her off, leaned back again, and half-dozed while waiting for the bell.
When the bell finally rang, the teacher walked in holding a stack of tests. She scanned the room—though Meteor couldn't shake the feeling the teacher had glared right at her.
After confirming everyone was present, the teacher tapped the lectern, cleared her throat twice, and pointed at the papers.
"Yesterday's exam—overall, you all did very well. Aside from a very small number of students, everyone passed."
"Now, when I call your name, come up and get your paper."
Beside Meteor, Mejiro McQueen kept watching the teacher with an expectant gaze.
"Mejiro McQueen."
"Here!"
When McQueen returned to her seat, test in hand, she flashed Meteor a friendly smile. In her eyes, Meteor—who had looked confident while writing yesterday—was absolutely a strong candidate for first place.
But in the end, I still beat her, McQueen thought, pleased as she admired her score.
She even started guessing whether Meteor would be second or third. From how smoothly Meteor had written, those questions clearly hadn't challenged her… maybe she'd just slipped on a multiple-choice item.
McQueen's innocent speculation continued as the teacher called names one after another:
"Fine Motion."
"Tokai Teio."
"T.M. Opera O."
As each name was called, McQueen grew more and more puzzled. Eternal Meteor sat there the whole time, still wearing that carefree smile.
That can't be right… Did she forget to write her name? And she's still acting so confident?
McQueen's confusion climbed through the ceiling—until the second-to-last name was called.
"Twin Turbo."
"Y-Yes!"
Twin Turbo shot to her feet, eyes squeezed shut, cheeks tense, looking like she was bracing for a scolding.
But the teacher simply smiled, not angry at all.
"You passed this time. But you still need to work hard."
"Yay!"
Twin Turbo relaxed instantly and bounced up to the front to collect her test. Her tail swished wildly—she was obviously thrilled.
I wanna pet it… especially since it's gradient-colored! Eternal Meteor stared at Turbo's tail, already imagining how sleek and slippery it would feel.
Her hungry gaze made Twin Turbo suddenly shiver. Turbo hurriedly turned around to look for the source, and Meteor immediately snapped her eyes away, pretending nothing was happening.
After spinning in place twice and finding nothing, Twin Turbo finally sat back down.
Then the teacher called the last name—her tone notably sharper than before.
"Finally—Eternal Meteor!"
"Oh! Coming!"
Unlike the teacher's irritated voice, Eternal Meteor stayed cheerfully upbeat. With everyone watching her in worried silence, she walked up, took her test… then zipped right back to her seat like a gust of wind.
"Eternal Meteor. After class, bring your paper and come to my office."
"Okay."
"Now we'll begin today's lesson. For now, look over your tests—tomorrow we'll go over the questions."
When class ended, Tokai Teio had just started to come over as if to ask what happened—only for Eternal Meteor to leave immediately, almost impatiently, following the teacher out of the classroom.
A long corridor later, inside the office…
"You know why I called you here, right?" the teacher asked, sitting behind her desk.
"I do," Eternal Meteor replied.
The teacher studied her—Meteor showed zero nervousness. Great, the teacher thought. Another one that's going to be hard to manage.
"Honestly, it's understandable if you didn't know everything," the teacher said. "You transferred in late, and you've just come back from medical leave."
As she spoke, she picked up Meteor's paper, propped it upright in front of Meteor's face, and repeatedly tapped the big written-response section with her finger.
"But! What do you mean by: 'Symboli Rudolf used electricity to strike down every horse girl she raced against'?!"
Her voice made it clear she was forcing herself to hold back her anger.
Then she flipped the paper over and started jabbing her finger at it even faster—so fast it was practically a blur.
"And this! 'Maruzensky got in a Lamborghini halfway through the race and drove past all the horse girls ahead of her'?!"
To be honest, when she'd first read Meteor's answers, the teacher had wondered if she'd been staying up too late and hallucinating. There weren't any students in this class who looked that outrageously mischievous.
But then she'd seen the name written at the top—and that made it even harder to believe. From the two classes Meteor had attended so far, she'd left a very good impression: a polite, well-behaved kid.
So how on earth had this student written answers like that?
"Look—if you'd left it blank, I wouldn't even have said anything. But why did you write it like this?"
"And also!" the teacher continued, stabbing the multiple-choice section. "You only got one multiple-choice question right—'Choose the Triple Crown horse girl from the following'—don't you think that's a little too much?"
Her finger landed on the option she meant—Symboli Rudolf—and the teacher looked like she was about to suffer a migraine. Even guessing randomly shouldn't result in getting forty-nine out of fifty wrong.
Meanwhile, inside Meteor's head, X—the thing that had been bickering with her nonstop—was practically dying laughing.
"Hahahahahaha! Fifty! A full fifty multiple-choice questions! And you got only one right?! And it was the only one you didn't randomly pick—are you actually a genius?!"
To make sure Meteor fully felt how wildly X was cackling, it even imitated the sound of someone slamming a desk over and over.
Meteor's eyelid twitched. She stopped paying attention to the teacher entirely and started arguing with X in her mind.
When the teacher finished venting and saw Meteor clearly hadn't listened—her attention wandering off who-knows-where—the teacher's temper finally exploded.
"Eternal Meteor!"
"Huh? Ah—yes!"
Yanked back to reality by the roar, Meteor cut off her fight with X and stared at the teacher, who looked like she was literally on fire. Meteor really wanted to smack that still-laughing X for this.
The teacher decided to use what she considered the most straightforward and effective method.
She'd been ready to let this go…
But Meteor's utterly unconcerned attitude made her change her mind on the spot.
This kind of student needed to be properly dealt with.
"Tomorrow, I want to see a parent's signature on your test paper!"
