Chapter 80: Found You

The drive back had a weight to it.

Ted glanced at Rango, who'd been somewhere else since they pulled away from Hutchinson's house, and finally decided the silence had gone on long enough.

"Still running it?"

Rango nodded once. "The Cabin in the Woods, Ted. An actual organization. Named after the movie, or the movie was named after them — I haven't decided which is more unsettling." He looked out the window at the familiar streets of the neighborhood he'd grown up in, which looked different now the way places always look different once you know something new about them. "Everything I thought I understood about the scale of this work just moved one level deeper."

Ted was quiet for a moment. "I assumed you were thinking about your parents."

Rango's jaw shifted. He looked at his hands on his knees and then back out the window.

"Honestly? I don't know if I should be."

He said it flat, without self-pity, just the even tone of someone reporting a conclusion they'd arrived at logically. "They were gone most of my childhood. Birthdays, holidays, school stuff — they'd send something from wherever they were. A package, a card. Not always a call." He paused. "Based on what Hutchinson said, they were strong enough that worrying about them feels like the wrong instinct. Like worrying about a thunderstorm."

Ted turned on the armrest with a sharpness that was unusual for him — not the dry commentary, something more direct than that, his eyes carrying the specific weight of someone who has been listening to the wrong version of a story for too long and has decided to correct it.

"Don't do that," he said.

Rango looked at him.

"One time," Ted said, "you were on the phone with your mother and you coughed twice. Just twice. The next morning there was a pot of soup on the doorstep — she'd been up all night making it and put it on the first available courier." He didn't let Rango answer. "You wanted to learn to ski. She knitted you a sweater. You wanted to sail. She knitted you one with a whale on it, which I still think was the correct call aesthetically." A pause. "One time you got stubborn about something and stopped eating for two days. Just shut down. Pete and Louise drove back from three states over, still in their road clothes, walked in the door, and started making dinner."

He looked at Rango steadily.

"Think about who drops everything and drives through the night because their kid skipped a few meals. That's not a distant parent. That's someone who was carrying two lives simultaneously and trying not to let either one show the other its weight."

He wasn't done.

"And from the first day you summoned me — the first day I existed in this form, which could have gone a dozen different ways for a kid and a talking bear — your mother never once treated me like something that needed explaining. She tucked in two sets of blankets every night. She looked into getting me enrolled at your school." Something moved in Ted's voice that didn't usually move there. "The reason they weren't home was because they were out there doing the work that meant you could have a home to be in. Not because they chose the work over you."

McQueen's dash display flickered on briefly — not communicating anything specific, just present, the way he was present when something mattered.

"Teddy's right," he said. "Everything you described about them — the soup, the sweater, showing up covered in road dust — those aren't the moves of people who don't care. Those are the moves of people who care so much they can't stand it."

Rango sat with that for a long moment.

Then the corner of his mouth moved — not quite a smile, just the architecture of one, the slight release of something that had been held.

"All right," he said. "I hear you." He shook his head. "Don't make me sound like a guy with a whole therapy situation, though. I'm fine."

"You're allowed to not be fine," Ted said. "Those are different statements."

"I know they're different." Rango straightened up, and when he spoke again his voice had the quality of a decision being made rather than a conclusion being accepted. "Things have to be done in order. There's a first thing."

"Which is?" Ted and McQueen asked, in the specific unison of people who already knew the answer and were providing the straight line.

Rango's voice came up, deliberate and certain:

"We find the Yellow-Eyed Demon. And we end it."

That evening, Murder House was doing what Murder House did — generating a specific kind of organized chaos that Rango had learned to navigate the way you navigate a kitchen that someone else keeps rearranging. Loud, crowded, perpetually on the edge of several arguments simultaneously.

Gloria was cooking, which meant the kitchen smelled like something good and Rango was in there doing the thing he did where he stood too close and said things just barely on the right side of ridiculous. She'd been quiet for two days — a specific quiet that Rango recognized and had been working around — and whatever he was saying in there was pulling her back into something lighter, her laugh cutting through the general noise of the house with the quality of something that had been missing and had returned.

In the living room, the poker game had stalled out.

Ted folded, set down his cards, and leaned toward Dean, who had also bowed out early.

"Question," Ted said, with the specific tone he used when he was setting something up.

Dean, who had learned to be slightly wary of Ted's specific tone, looked at him sideways.

"Do you think—" Ted nodded toward the kitchen — "the pattern in Rango's romantic history is a psychological compensation? Every serious relationship he's had—"

Dean considered this with more genuine thought than the setup probably warranted. He glanced at the kitchen, thought briefly about a certain pattern in his own brother's type, and nodded slowly. "There might be something to that."

"Good," Ted said. "Now that you've agreed with the premise — that's your cousin's girlfriend you just analyzed. What's wrong with you?"

Dean opened his mouth.

Closed it.

"You started it," he said.

"I was testing your character," Ted said. "You failed."

"You can't—"

Ted kicked him, precisely, in the shin, and relocated to the other end of the couch at speed.

"What was that—"

Rango came through from the kitchen carrying a tray, took in the scene — Dean rubbing his shin, Ted on the far armrest with the expression of someone who had been sitting there unbothered since the beginning of time — and set the tray down.

"Do I want to know?"

"No," they said, simultaneously.

"Great."

Dinner was the specific kind of crowded that happened when the house had more people than chairs and nobody was willing to eat in shifts. Sam had the corner spot and had somehow produced a paperback from somewhere and was reading it with one hand while eating with the other, which Dean periodically criticized and Sam periodically ignored.

Rango looked at the table — at Gloria, at Dean, at Sam, at Ted, at Megan running a quiet systems check in the corner, at Kevin who'd come up from the museum for the night and was having an animated argument with one of the other residents about something that had started as basketball and had clearly become personal — and felt the specific weight of people he was responsible for.

Twenty-something thousand dollars a month in overhead and the Yellow-Eyed Demon couldn't be bothered to show up on schedule, he thought, and was about to communicate this grievance when a car engine came up hard outside, no warning, straight to the driveway.

No knock. Dom didn't knock. He never knocked.

Dominic Toretto walked through the front door, assessed the room, registered the food, and sat down at the table with the comfortable authority of someone who considered himself invited everywhere and had never been meaningfully proven wrong.

"Smells good," he said, and reached past Kevin for the largest piece on the serving plate.

Kevin watched this happen with the expression of someone deciding how to feel about it.

"Dom." Rango set down his fork. "The order."

Dom chewed, swallowed, drank someone's beer. "Outside. Took two trips and a rented truck. Whatever you're hunting, I want it on record that I went to considerable trouble." He pointed his beer at Rango. "No civilians. Whatever this is."

"No civilians," Rango confirmed. He was already standing. "The commission covers the sourcing cost."

"And then some," Dom said.

Gloria looked at Dom. "Can I get you something? There's more—"

"That steak," Dom said, with genuine appreciation. "The seasoning. What is that?"

Gloria smiled — the warm, easy smile she had with people who were direct about things. "Salt, pepper, a little love, and about twenty years of my grandmother telling me I was doing it wrong."

Dom laughed, which was a sound the room wasn't entirely prepared for.

Rango was already out the door.

Outside, the truck's cargo bay held twelve wooden crates, stacked with the neat efficiency of someone who had moved things that couldn't be moved through official channels for long enough to have developed a system.

Rango pried the first one open.

Sam, standing beside him, looked at the contents and then at Rango.

"Is that a Vickers?"

"World War One Vickers heavy machine gun," Rango confirmed, examining it with the expression of a man inspecting produce. "Clean. Oiled. Maintained."

Dom had appeared in the doorway behind them. "I maintain everything."

"Dom." Rango turned to look at him. "I asked for a weapons package for a significant supernatural threat. You brought me a museum piece."

"I brought you that and the other eleven crates," Dom said, with the mild offense of someone whose gift basket has been judged by its first item.

Dean opened the second crate.

Then he stopped.

Looked at the contents.

Looked at Rango.

"Is that an M134?"

Rango reached in with both hands and lifted it out — the Minigun, six rotating barrels, the specific weight of something that consumed ammunition at six thousand rounds per minute and had a nickname, the Vulcan Cannon, that it had earned honestly.

He held it the way Jesse Ventura held it in Predator — the 1987 original, the film that had established the visual grammar of a man holding an impractical weapon and meaning it.

"Yeah," Dean said, slowly. "That'll work."

Sam was running a quiet mental calculation of what six thousand rounds per minute meant for their operational plan and looked like the math was producing interesting results.

Dom watched this from the doorway. "Who are you dealing with? Because I know people—"

"You don't know these people," Rango said, and said it with enough weight that Dom, who had personally stared down situations that would have hospitalized most men, accepted it.

"Fine." Dom raised both hands. "On your head. Just — no civilians."

"No civilians," Rango said again.

He set the Minigun back in its crate with the care of something expensive and turned to Dom. "The antiques. Where are we?"

"One deal closed yesterday. Forty-two million, clean. Buyer didn't ask a single question, which either means he has better equipment than FDA standards require or—" Dom paused, in the way of a man editing something out of what he was going to say — "or his due diligence process is not robust. Either way, his problem now." He glanced at Rango. "Second buyer's confirmed. Media company, private acquisition arm. Old money, entertainment sector. Very enthusiastic about the coins specifically."

Rango exhaled. "Good. That float covers the next two months."

He was about to head back inside when Dean appeared from the far end of the driveway, phone still in hand, walking fast with the specific forward energy of someone carrying news they couldn't contain.

"We found him," Dean said.

He didn't need to say who.

Staten Island.

New York's most frequently overlooked borough — the one that required a ferry to reach, that people from the other four mentioned the way you mention a distant relative you don't see often. Quieter than Manhattan, less dense than Brooklyn, carrying the specific energy of a place that had stayed closer to what New York used to be before it became what New York was now. Old neighborhoods. Old churches.

One of the old churches, specifically.

Outside it, in the specific cold of a November night that had decided to be serious about itself, the Yellow-Eyed Demon stood and looked at the stone cross above the door.

Something moved in his expression — briefly, involuntary, the ghost of a memory that had no business being there — and then it was gone, sealed under the flat efficiency of what he actually was.

He walked toward the entrance.

And then time stopped.

Not slowed — stopped. The specific cessation of Azazel's experience that had nothing to do with speed and everything to do with something operating on a completely different register, the way Midnight Mass understood that the oldest evils don't announce themselves with noise and fire but with the simple removal of the ordinary rules.

A figure emerged from the church interior.

He was tall, Black, built with the quiet density of something that had inhabited a human body long enough to have made it entirely its own. His face was without affect — not cold, not hostile, just the specific expressionlessness of something that had no need for human social signaling. His eyes held a gold that was not reflected light — it was generated, from somewhere inside, the way bioluminescence is generated.

Behind him, folding open from his back with the slow certainty of something that had always been there:

White wings.

Not feathered in the decorative sense. Structural. The wings of something that had been flying since before the continent existed.

He looked at Azazel with the patient attention of something that had all the time available and had chosen to spend some of it here.

Azazel stopped.

"Amanna," he said, and his voice carried the specific register of someone who has encountered a complication they hadn't factored in. Not fear. Something more interesting than fear. Recognition.

"I wondered when you'd get here."

The angel said nothing.

He didn't need to.
