Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22

CHAPTER 22, Shadows That Hunt 🔥

The wind carried a different weight now.

It wasn't just the cool breath of open land—

it carried tension.

A silent warning.

Jay walked at the front, his pace steady, his presence calm but alert. Behind him, Elara and Lira followed closely. The distance between them was small—but the silence between them felt heavy.

Each of them knew—

things had changed.

---

Hours passed.

The broken mountain slowly disappeared behind them, becoming nothing more than a shadow on the horizon. The land ahead stretched wide and uneven—rocky plains mixed with patches of dry grass and scattered ruins of something long forgotten.

No villages.

No travelers.

No life.

---

Elara broke the silence first.

"That figure… back there."

Jay didn't look back.

"…It wasn't human."

---

Lira hesitated.

"I felt it too…"

She clutched her arm slightly.

"It felt like the Core… but deeper."

---

Jay nodded slightly.

"…Stronger. More controlled."

---

That meant one thing.

Whoever—or whatever—they were dealing with now…

was not just a mindless force.

---

The sun had begun to set when they finally reached the ruins.

Broken stone pillars rose from the ground like skeletons of an ancient civilization. Cracked walls and fallen structures stretched across the area, half-buried in dust and time.

Jay stopped.

---

"…We rest here."

---

Elara looked around cautiously.

"This place doesn't feel safe."

---

Jay stepped forward, scanning the surroundings.

"Nowhere is."

---

They moved inside what remained of a large, collapsed hall. The roof was mostly gone, allowing the fading light of the evening sky to spill in.

Elara began setting up a small protective barrier.

Lira sat quietly near one of the broken walls, her eyes distant, lost in thoughts she couldn't fully understand.

---

Jay stood at the edge of the ruins.

Watching.

Listening.

Waiting.

---

Night fell.

---

The stars appeared one by one.

But something was wrong.

---

The silence.

It wasn't peaceful.

It was empty.

---

Then—

a sound.

Soft.

Faint.

A step.

---

Jay's eyes shifted instantly.

"…We're not alone."

---

Elara stood up immediately, her staff glowing.

"Where?"

---

Jay didn't answer.

Because the answer came on its own.

---

From the shadows—

figures emerged.

One.

Then two.

Then more.

---

Six in total.

---

They moved slowly, stepping into the faint moonlight.

Each one wore dark clothing, their faces partially hidden. But what stood out—

were their eyes.

Cold.

Emotionless.

---

Lira's breath caught.

"…It's them…"

---

Elara frowned.

"Who?"

---

Lira's voice trembled.

"…The ones I saw… before…"

"…connected to the Core…"

---

Jay stepped forward.

His expression didn't change.

---

"…So they've arrived."

---

One of the figures stepped ahead of the others.

Unlike the rest, his presence was different.

Sharper.

More controlled.

---

"You destroyed the Core."

His voice was calm.

Almost… curious.

---

Jay met his gaze.

"Yes."

---

The man tilted his head slightly.

"…Interesting."

---

For a moment, no one moved.

Then—

the man smiled faintly.

---

"Kill him."

---

The others moved instantly.

Fast.

Silent.

Deadly.

---

The first attacker lunged forward.

---

FLASH.

Jay vanished.

---

He reappeared behind the attacker—

striking once.

Clean.

Precise.

---

The body fell.

---

The others didn't hesitate.

They attacked together.

---

Blades flashed in the dark.

---

Jay moved between them like a shadow.

Teleportation.

Hiddenness.

Every movement flawless.

Every strike fatal.

---

One by one—

they fell.

---

But something was wrong.

---

They didn't scream.

They didn't hesitate.

They didn't fear death.

---

They fought like… empty shells.

---

Elara realized it first.

"They're not normal!"

---

Jay already knew.

---

"They're controlled."

---

Only one remained.

The leader.

---

He hadn't moved.

Hadn't attacked.

He simply watched.

---

"…Impressive."

---

Jay stepped closer.

"…You're not like them."

---

The man smiled.

"No."

---

His eyes glowed faintly.

Red.

---

"…I'm much more."

---

The air shifted.

Pressure increased.

---

Jay's instincts sharpened.

---

"…Good."

---

The man's smile widened.

---

"Let's see how long you survive."

---

And in the next instant—

he disappeared.

---

Faster than anything before.

---

Jay's eyes widened slightly—

then—

he smiled.

---

For the first time—

a real fight had begun.

---

The ruins fell into silence again.

But this time—

it wasn't empty.

---

It was waiting.

---

Because the next clash—

would not be simple.

---

It would decide something far bigger.
