CHAPTER 15, THE VESSEL OF DARKNESS
The wind no longer felt natural.
It carried something with it now—something faint… yet unmistakable.
A presence.
Jay and Elara walked in silence after leaving the ruined seal behind. Neither of them spoke about what had just happened, but both understood one thing clearly—
They had just interfered with something far bigger than either of them had expected.
The forest had changed again.
Earlier, it felt like a place filled with hidden danger.
Now—
it felt like a place that was watching them back.
Elara finally broke the silence.
"That fragment… it wasn't weak."
Jay nodded slightly.
"It was incomplete."
Elara tightened her grip on her staff.
"If that was only a fragment… then the real entity…"
She didn't finish the sentence.
She didn't need to.
Jay's gaze shifted toward the distant mountains, barely visible through the gaps between the trees.
"…will be stronger."
They continued walking.
Hours passed.
The forest slowly began to thin.
The trees were no longer as dense, and patches of rocky ground started to replace the soft earth beneath their feet.
The temperature dropped further.
Their breath began to show faintly in the air.
They were getting closer.
Then—
Jay suddenly stopped.
This time—
it wasn't instinct.
It was something else.
A pull.
A faint… invisible force.
As if something was calling him.
Elara noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
Jay didn't answer right away.
His eyes were focused ahead.
"…Do you feel that?"
Elara closed her eyes for a moment.
Then shook her head.
"No. I don't feel anything."
Jay took a step forward.
The pull grew stronger.
Like a thread tightening around his mind.
"…This way."
Elara hesitated.
"That's not the path on the map."
Jay didn't look back.
"I know."
And yet—
he kept walking.
Something inside him was guiding him now.
Not instinct.
Not logic.
Something deeper.
Elara followed, though her expression showed clear concern.
"This could be a trap."
Jay's voice remained calm.
"It probably is."
"…And you're still going?"
"Yes."
Elara sighed quietly.
"You're impossible."
The path they took led away from the main direction.
Deeper into a rocky region where the forest began to break apart.
Soon—
they reached it.
A cave.
Hidden between two massive stone formations.
The entrance was narrow, almost invisible unless someone was looking directly at it.
But what made it stand out—
was the energy.
It leaked out faintly.
Cold.
Ancient.
Jay stepped closer.
The pull in his chest grew stronger.
"This is it."
Elara frowned.
"This place… feels wrong."
Jay glanced at her.
"Everything here is wrong."
Then—
without hesitation—
he stepped inside.
Elara quickly followed.
The cave was dark.
Completely dark.
Even the faint moonlight from outside disappeared within a few steps.
Elara raised her staff.
A soft blue light formed at its tip, illuminating the surroundings.
The walls of the cave were rough, uneven.
But something else caught their attention—
Marks.
Carved into the stone.
Strange symbols.
Different from the ones at the ruined seal.
These were older.
More chaotic.
Elara stepped closer to examine them.
"These aren't structured runes…"
Jay asked,
"Meaning?"
She swallowed slightly.
"These weren't created to contain something…"
"…They were made to worship it."
Silence filled the cave.
Jay's expression didn't change.
"Then we're in the right place."
They continued deeper.
The cave stretched further than expected.
The air grew colder.
Heavier.
And then—
they heard it.
A sound.
Soft.
Weak.
A breath.
Elara immediately turned toward the source.
"…Someone's here."
Jay moved first.
Carefully.
Slowly.
They reached a small open space within the cave.
And there—
they saw her.
A girl.
Lying on the ground.
Unconscious.
Her clothes were torn, covered in dust and faint traces of blood. Her silver hair was messy, partially covering her face.
But what stood out—
was her arm.
Dark veins spread across it.
Just like the corrupted beasts.
Elara rushed forward.
"She's still alive!"
Jay approached more slowly.
His eyes were focused on the dark veins.
"…Corruption."
Elara looked up at him.
"But weaker… not fully spread yet."
Jay knelt beside the girl.
The moment he got closer—
the pull he had felt earlier…
intensified.
His eyes narrowed.
"…She's the source."
Elara froze.
"What?"
Jay didn't look away from the girl.
"The energy… it's coming from her."
Elara shook her head.
"That's impossible—she's just a human!"
Jay placed his hand near her arm—
not touching—
just sensing.
The dark veins pulsed faintly.
In rhythm.
Like a heartbeat.
"No," he said quietly.
"…She's connected to it."
Suddenly—
the girl's eyes snapped open.
Dark.
Completely dark.
Before Elara could react—
the girl grabbed Jay's wrist.
Her grip was unnaturally strong.
And then—
she spoke.
But it wasn't her voice.
"…You broke the seal…"
The air inside the cave shifted violently.
Elara stepped back.
"Jay—!"
Jay didn't pull his hand away.
Instead—
he looked directly into her dark eyes.
"Who are you?"
The girl's lips twisted into something unnatural.
"…I am what remains…"
"…of what you tried to destroy."
The cave trembled slightly.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Jay's grip tightened slightly.
"…A fragment."
The girl's expression changed.
"…You understand."
Jay's voice was calm.
"Then let go of her."
For a brief moment—
silence.
Then—
the girl's body jerked violently.
Her grip loosened.
And she collapsed again.
Unconscious.
The dark veins faded slightly.
Elara rushed forward again.
"Is she okay?!"
Jay slowly stood up.
His eyes remained fixed on her.
"…For now."
Elara looked confused.
"What just happened?"
Jay turned toward the cave entrance.
"That fragment…"
"…attached itself to her."
Elara's expression turned serious.
"You mean… it's using her as a vessel?"
Jay nodded.
"Yes."
Silence fell again.
He looked back at the girl.
"…And now…"
"…we can't leave her behind."
Elara hesitated.
"But if she's connected to that thing—"
"She is," Jay said.
"…Which means she's also the key."
Elara looked at him.
"You're planning to take her with us?"
Jay didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
Elara let out a slow breath.
"…This is getting worse."
Jay bent down and carefully lifted the girl.
Despite her condition, she felt light.
Fragile.
But the energy inside her—
was anything but.
As they began walking out of the cave—
the wind outside howled louder than before.
And far away—
in the Ashen Mountains—
something reacted.
It had found a new connection.
A new path.
And now—
the real conflict had begun.
