Chapter 25 - Chapter Twenty-Five — Shadows in the Hall

The gunshot rang again, sharper this time, reverberating off the marble floors and crystal chandeliers. The music from the ballroom's celebration was long forgotten, replaced by a stunned silence that pressed against every board member's chest. Evelyn's heart pounded, and her hands shook as she gripped the edge of the terrace railing.

Adrian didn't move immediately. His gaze snapped toward the hallway—the source of the sound. The familiar hum of the security systems seemed impossibly loud now, each beep a warning.

"Marcus," Adrian barked, voice sharp and cutting through the tension. "Where's the feed?"

Marcus' fingers flew across the console. "All cameras—blackout. They've overridden the internal security feed!" His voice was tight, fear creeping through the professional calm he normally maintained.

Evelyn felt bile rise in her throat. Her mind raced. Whoever had the fingerprint access, whoever had mimicked her—was still here. Inside. Watching. Waiting.

Adrian's jaw tightened. "No one leaves this building," he growled. "Lock every exit. Full lockdown. Now."

The board members gasped and protested, but the orders were clear. No one could interfere. No one could escape. Not that anyone could leave anyway—the corridors were a maze of uncertainty now.

Evelyn whispered, almost to herself, "It's inside. They're in the building."

Adrian's eyes snapped to hers. "Yes. And if we don't act, they'll use Maya—and every one of us—as leverage. Every move we make is bait for them to manipulate."

She nodded, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down. "Then we need to think like them. Predict them. Anticipate where they're going next."

Marcus interrupted, voice trembling. "Sir… there's motion in the executive wing. Near your office. Multiple figures. They're fast… coordinated."

Adrian cursed under his breath, already moving toward the main hallway. Evelyn followed, tight on his heels. The tension in the air was palpable, thick enough to choke on. Every corner, every shadow could conceal a threat. Every doorway could hold an enemy.

They reached the hallway leading to Adrian's office. The polished floors reflected the dim emergency lights, stretching long shadows along the walls. Evelyn's stomach twisted as she saw a dark figure pause at the corner. The silhouette was impossibly familiar. The height, the posture—it was her.

Her blood ran cold. The impersonator had returned, but this time, it wasn't alone. Two more figures flanked her. Both moved with precision, carrying something—guns? Devices? The grainy shadows concealed details.

Adrian muttered under his breath, "They're controlling the narrative. Again."

Evelyn clenched her fists. "We have to reach Maya first. Before they move her again."

Adrian nodded. "Split up. Cover all exits. Marcus, give us thermal feeds. Track movement, not appearances. They're hiding in plain sight."

As Marcus set up the thermal overlays, Evelyn and Adrian advanced cautiously. The shadows shifted unnaturally; figures appeared, disappeared, and reappeared along the hallway.

Then, a sudden flash of movement—Adrian lunged, catching one of the intruders by the arm. The figure twisted violently, forcing him back, but not before Evelyn caught a glimpse of a badge clipped to their jacket. It was corporate security.

Her stomach dropped. "They're using our own people."

Adrian's eyes darkened. "Internal betrayal. Just what I feared."

Suddenly, the shadow that looked like her stopped, turned toward the small window in the corridor. The glass reflected a pale, distorted version of her own face. Evelyn froze. That reflection wasn't her—it couldn't be. Yet every detail, every movement, mirrored her instincts, her stance, her timing.

The doppelgänger smiled. A slow, calculated curl of the lips. Then, she raised a small device in her hand. Evelyn's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the shape—a biometric scanner.

"No," she whispered.

Adrian's voice was cold. "They're trying to force another override. Another transfer. Now."

The doppelgänger pressed the device to the console outside the emergency server room. The system beeped—a single red light flashed, confirming access.

Evelyn's mind raced. Whoever had the first fingerprint, whoever had orchestrated the prior transfers… this was a contingency. They anticipated every move, every protocol. And now, they were escalating.

"Adrian," she said sharply, "if they succeed here, the money isn't the worst of it. They'll control the building, the systems, and every one of us in this room."

He gritted his teeth. "Then we cut the power. Total blackout. Force them to act blindly."

Evelyn hesitated. "That could trap Maya somewhere else. Or worse—trigger failsafes."

Adrian's eyes locked with hers. "Then we do it precisely. Together. Timing is everything."

They crouched near the main junction, waiting for the moment. The hallway was silent but for the soft click of the doppelgänger's heels and the hum of the emergency lights. Every second stretched into eternity.

And then, unexpectedly—a voice echoed from the speaker system. Smooth. Mocking.

"Ah… the prodigal CEO finally realizes the rules of the game. Welcome to the next level."

Evelyn's pulse froze. The voice was… familiar.

"Who is that?" she demanded.

Adrian's face darkened. "Someone we thought was out of the game."

The lights flickered, and a shadow moved across the emergency stairwell. Not one of the three intruders—they were waiting, watching, controlling. This was someone else entirely.

A chill ran through Evelyn. "This isn't just an impersonator… or internal betrayal. Someone bigger… orchestrating everything from the shadows."

The speaker crackled again. "Time's almost up. Make your choice—or watch everything you love disappear."

Evelyn looked at Adrian, their eyes meeting in shared understanding and terror.

Somewhere in the building, Maya's life hung by a thread.

And whoever was behind this—knew exactly how to push them to the breaking point.

A second gunshot rang out. Closer. Right behind the emergency stairwell.

Adrian drew his weapon. Evelyn tightened her grip on hers.

The countdown wasn't just financial anymore.

It was personal.

And it was far from over.
