Chapter 14 - Between Distance and Desire

Lior had always believed that control was strength.

Control over his scent.

Control over his emotions.

Control over the way his omega instincts stirred when an Alpha stood too close.

But ever since that kiss—

That one reckless, breathless moment beneath the moonlight—

Control had become a lie he kept telling himself.

He avoided Kaizen Vale the next morning.

And the next.

And the next.

He changed his route through the academy corridors. Ate lunch in the smaller courtyard behind the east wing. Left lectures before they ended just to escape the possibility of running into him.

But avoiding a man like Kaizen Vale was nearly impossible.

Kaizen didn't chase.

He observed.

And that made it worse.

Lior was gathering his books after strategy class when he felt it.

That scent.

Clean. Cool. Dominant.

Alpha.

Kaizen.

It wrapped around him slowly — not aggressively, not possessively — but present. Steady. Grounding.

Lior's spine stiffened.

Don't react.

Don't turn.

Don't breathe.

"You're running out of places to hide," Kaizen said calmly from behind him.

Lior exhaled sharply and turned.

Kaizen stood near the window, sunlight cutting sharp lines across his jaw. He looked composed as ever. Dark coat. Perfect posture. Controlled expression.

As if he hadn't kissed Lior like he meant it.

As if Lior hadn't leaned into it.

"You're imagining things," Lior replied coolly.

"Am I?"

"Yes."

"Then why won't you look at me properly?"

That hit.

Lior's jaw tightened. He forced himself to meet Kaizen's gaze.

It was a mistake.

Kaizen's eyes were unreadable — but not empty. There was something beneath the surface. Something restrained.

"You're overestimating your importance," Lior said sharply.

Kaizen didn't react.

But the air shifted.

"Is that what this is?" Kaizen asked quietly. "Pride?"

Lior's pulse fluttered. "It's called dignity."

Kaizen stepped closer.

Just one step.

Lior's omega instincts stirred instantly, heat pooling low in his stomach before he could stop it. His body betrayed him so easily around this Alpha.

"I kissed you," Kaizen said evenly.

"You did."

"You kissed me back."

Lior's throat went dry.

"That was a mistake."

Kaizen tilted his head slightly.

"You didn't feel like you were making a mistake."

Lior's heart hammered.

He hated that Kaizen spoke like that — calm, observant, too perceptive.

"You're insufferable," Lior muttered.

"And you're avoiding me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Because I liked it.

Because your scent makes my knees weak.

Because when you touched me, I didn't want it to end.

But Lior swallowed those truths down.

"You're an Alpha," he said instead. "You act on impulse."

"I don't."

"You did."

Kaizen's gaze sharpened.

"That wasn't impulse."

The certainty in his voice made Lior's chest tighten.

"Then what was it?" Lior demanded.

A pause.

Then—

"Choice."

The word landed heavy between them.

Lior's breath faltered.

Choice.

Not instinct. Not heat. Not dominance.

Choice.

Kaizen moved closer again — slowly enough for Lior to step away.

He didn't.

"You think I kiss people carelessly?" Kaizen asked softly.

"I think Alphas take what they want."

"I don't."

Lior's omega instincts were in chaos now. Kaizen's scent wrapped around him like silk — controlled but unmistakably present. It didn't demand submission.

It invited closeness.

And that terrified him.

"You shouldn't stand so close," Lior whispered.

"Why?"

"Because I can smell you."

Kaizen's lips curved faintly.

"That's the point."

Heat rushed to Lior's face.

"You're arrogant."

"And you're affected."

Lior looked away.

He hated how right that sounded.

Kaizen's hand lifted — slowly — stopping just short of touching Lior's cheek.

"Tell me to leave," he said.

The challenge wasn't aggressive.

It was patient.

Lior opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

His omega instincts were whispering dangerous things. Safe. Warm. Stay.

"I don't want you confused," Kaizen continued quietly. "I don't kiss out of obligation."

"Then why?" Lior asked hoarsely.

Kaizen stepped into his space fully now, his voice lowering.

"Because you looked at me like you wanted me to."

Lior's breath stuttered.

He had.

He remembered it too clearly — the way Kaizen's hand had settled at his waist that night. The way the world had blurred around them. The way Lior had tilted his chin up instead of pulling away.

"You shouldn't say things like that," Lior whispered.

"Why?"

"Because I might believe you."

Kaizen's fingers finally brushed Lior's jaw.

Barely.

But the contact sent a shiver down his spine.

"Good," Kaizen murmured.

Lior's knees nearly weakened.

"I don't want to be your weakness," Lior said suddenly.

"You're not."

"You're an Alpha heir. I'm just—"

"Lior."

His name in Kaizen's voice sounded dangerously intimate.

"You're not just anything."

Silence fell.

Lior's pulse pounded in his ears.

"You're shaking again," Kaizen noted softly.

"I'm not."

"You are."

Kaizen's thumb brushed lightly along his jawline.

This time Lior didn't protest.

Didn't step back.

Didn't pretend.

He leaned into it.

Just slightly.

The admission felt bigger than words.

Kaizen's expression changed — something warmer, something almost protective flickering in his eyes.

"You don't have to avoid me," Kaizen said.

"I'm not used to this."

"To what?"

"An Alpha asking instead of taking."

Kaizen's gaze darkened.

"I will never take from you."

The promise felt heavy.

Real.

And dangerous.

Lior's voice softened despite himself.

"You make it hard to think."

"That's not my intention."

"It feels intentional."

Kaizen's lips curved faintly.

"If I wanted to overwhelm you, you'd know."

Lior swallowed.

He believed that.

And strangely, that belief felt safe.

A tension lingered between them — not explosive, not frantic.

Just steady.

Deepening.

Kaizen leaned closer.

Not enough to kiss.

Just enough for Lior to feel his breath.

"I won't chase you," Kaizen said quietly. "But I won't pretend that didn't happen either."

Lior's chest tightened.

"Then what are we supposed to do?"

Kaizen studied him.

"Stop pretending we didn't feel it."

The honesty stripped something bare inside Lior.

He looked down briefly, then back up.

"…I did feel it."

Kaizen's hand tightened slightly at his jaw.

"And now?"

Lior hesitated.

His omega instincts were calmer now. Not frantic. Not ashamed.

Just aware.

"I still do," he admitted.

The confession hung fragile in the air.

Kaizen leaned in — slowly — giving him time.

Lior didn't move away.

Their lips met again.

Softer this time.

Slower.

No rush. No heat-driven urgency.

Just warmth.

Understanding.

Lior's hands found the front of Kaizen's coat, gripping lightly. Not pushing. Not pulling.

Holding.

Kaizen's hand slid to his waist, steady and sure.

The kiss deepened — not aggressively, but deliberately. Lior melted into it before he could think better of it.

This wasn't instinct.

This wasn't a rut.

This was choice.

When they finally pulled apart, Lior's breathing was uneven.

"You're trouble," he murmured.

Kaizen's thumb brushed gently beneath his lower lip.

"You like trouble."

Lior exhaled a soft laugh.

Maybe he did.

Somewhere down the corridor, distant footsteps echoed — reality pressing back in.

Kaizen stepped away reluctantly.

"We'll talk tonight," he said.

"That sounds ominous."

"It's not."

A pause.

"I don't want you hiding anymore."

Lior looked at him carefully.

"You're asking for something difficult."

"I'm not asking for perfection."

"Then what?"

"Honesty."

Lior considered that.

Then nodded once.

"Alright."

Kaizen studied him one last time — as if memorizing the moment — before turning to leave.

Lior stood there long after he was gone, fingers brushing his lips again.

His heart was still racing.

But this time—

He wasn't running from it.

And somewhere beyond the academy walls, Zyren Kross watched quietly from the shadows, interest sharpening with every whispered rumor of Kaizen Vale and the omega who didn't bow.

The game was shifting.

And Lior was no longer certain he wanted to play defensively.
