Miles Sherman reached out and wrapped his arms around Zoe Pierce.
Her damp tears soaked his clothes.
'This might be the first time in years I'm not willing to give up my chance to someone else on the team.'
His hand gently cupped her head, slowly stroking her hair downward.
Zoe Pierce unconsciously clutched the corner of his shirt. Her tears, no longer held back, soaked the fabric.
"From now on, you'll have a new family, new friends, a brand new start," Miles Sherman said softly. "It's okay. It's okay to be sad for a little while."
His voice was gentle and steady.
He held nothing back, a soft place for her to land.
It allowed her heart, which had been aching to the point of suffocation, to slowly regain its strength.
When she finally lifted her face, Zoe Pierce had stopped crying.
It was just as Miles had said; her sadness was only temporary.
As soon as she looked up, Zoe Pierce noticed a dark patch on the front of Miles's shirt. "I'm sorry..." she said immediately.
