"See me standing here and don't even say hello?" Zane Jennings took a deep drag, then snuffed out his cigarette. He gathered it with another one from the ledge, crumpled them in his hand, and tossed them into a nearby trash can. Dusting off his hands, he walked towards her.
Erin Lowell tensed up, telling a lie without batting an eye. "I didn't see you."
By the light of the nearly midnight moon, he saw the evasiveness in her eyes.
'Oh. Didn't see me, huh?'
He had seen her.
Zane Jennings didn't press the issue. He tilted his chin up, his voice raspy. "Just getting off work now?"
He knew being a doctor was a noble and difficult profession, but he could never truly empathize with the hardship when it involved others. Only with her did the feeling become real.
"I had an emergency surgery." The night wind blew her hair across her forehead, and she reached up to brush it away. "What about you? What are you doing here?"
